Self-congratulatory report card: AAP slams BJP govt's 100 days in power; Cong says ‘deserves zero rating'

Indian Express31-05-2025

The AAP delivered a scathing 'failed' verdict on the BJP's 100-day performance after forming a government in Delhi. The Delhi Congress also issued a list of 'sins' of the government.
AAP Delhi convenor Saurabh Bharadwaj accused the government of abandoning key welfare schemes, failing to deliver poll promises, and claimed that the party pushed Delhiites into distress. In a letter to CM Rekha Gupta, Bharadwaj wrote, 'The BJP government has completed 100 days in Delhi, but in these 100 days, the people of Delhi have had to endure many hardships. Delhi is experiencing long and frequent power cuts. Electricity prices have gone up significantly. Private schools have started arbitrarily increasing fees.'
At a press conference, Bharadwaj said, 'We've seen in films that mischievous children who fail in school sometimes make their own fake report cards. A similar mischievous children's government is currently running Delhi… How is it possible that the same child who gave the exam also creates their own report card and declares they passed?'
Listing several questions for the BJP government, Bharadwaj said, 'Where is the Rs 2,500 promised to women? Today is May 30, and there's no trace of it.'
He further questioned, 'When will 10,000 bus marshals, rendered jobless by the L-G, be reinstated and given permanent jobs as promised?'
The AAP leader also questioned fee hikes in private schools, and the BJP's failure to roll back school fees despite claiming audits: 'Under BJP rule, loot is the system; private schools have hiked fees in an inhumane manner.'
On healthcare, Bharadwaj said, 'The BJP government scrapped Farishtey Yojana and Daak Yojana, which provided free treatment at private hospitals for the poor… Hundreds of accident victims have not received treatment. This is the direct impact of the BJP shutting down the scheme.'
Bharadwaj said the 'Report Card' would be sent to all MLAs, MPs, and members of the media. 'We cannot let this self-assessment fool the public. Delhi deserves better,' he said.
Addressing the media at Rajiv Bhawan, Delhi unit chief Devender Yadav alleged that the Rekha Gupta government had failed on all fronts and claimed it deserved a 'zero' rating for its performance so far.
'The people of Delhi voted the BJP to power after 27 years with great hope, but all they have received in return are false claims and betrayal,' Yadav said.
He listed what he termed the '10 sins' of the new government: accused the government's Rs 1 lakh crore budget of being misleading, questioned the allocation of Z-Plus security to the Delhi BJP president, allegation of indulging in large-scale corruption in electricity procurement, criticism over the appointment Kapil Mishra as a minister who has previously been accused in communal riots, of rebranding existing schemes instead of initiating original ones, and for endangering the livelihood of the poor through a crackdown on street vending, among others.

U.P. CM inaugurates 91.35 km long Gorakhpur Link Expressway

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday (June 20, 2025) inaugurated the Gorakhpur Link Expressway built at a cost of over ₹7,000 crore. Calling the inauguration in Azamgarh a game changer, Mr. Adityanath stressed that U.P. is no longer a 'BIMARU' State but is emerging as an 'Expressway State'. BIMARU is a term used in reference to a group of States, including U.P. and Madhya Pradesh, that were historically considered to be lagging in terms of social and economic development. The Chief Minister added that Azamgarh, which once faced an identity crisis, has now transformed into a stronghold of indomitable courage. The change witnessed in the region owing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's guidance and the efforts of the 'double-engine government' has transformed Uttar Pradesh, Mr. Adityanath said. Inaugurating the 91.35 km long Gorakhpur Link Expressway built at a cost of ₹7,283 crore, Mr. Adityanath said the expressway will provide world-class connectivity not only to Azamgarh but also to adjoining districts of Sant Kabir Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar and Gorakhpur. 'After 2017, U.P. focused on strengthening its infrastructure. Coming out of its BIMARU tag, the State is playing a key role as the growth engine of the nation,' he pointed out. 'Before 2017' Touching upon the condition of U.P. before 2017, Mr. Adityanath said the State lacked both a developmental agenda and basic amenities. 'Any scheme for the welfare of the people failed to reach their rightful beneficiaries. Traditional industries of U.P. were on the brink of extinction, and a criminal culture of 'One District, One Mafia' thrived under the previous governments,' the Chief Minister added. He said development projects started in previous regimes were marred by corruption and criminal interference, while in contrary the situation drastically changed under the BJP government in the State. 'However, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the State has undergone a remarkable transformation, emerging as a mafia-free, riot-free, and conducive environment for both tourism and investment,' Mr. Adityanath said. Highlighting the growth of expressways in U.P., the Chief Minister added that the State boasts of the 340 km Purvanchal Expressway, the 300 km Bundelkhand Expressway, and now the 91 km Gorakhpur Link Expressway that is operational, with work underway on six more expressways. 'These [expressways] will bring massive change in the development outlook of U.P.,' he said.

Trump Step Back on Iran Pacifies Nervous Market

India's equity indices rebounded 1.3% on Friday, recouping losses made in the last three sessions on a relief rally sparked by US President Donald Trump putting on hold a plan that may have led to American involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict. The rebound helped the Sensex and Nifty erase all recent losses and notch up gains for the week. The Nifty closed above a key level at 25,112, up 1.3% or 319 points over Thursday's close. The BSE Sensex closed at 82,408, up 1.3% or 1,046 points. Both indices, which fell about 0.6% over the past three trading sessions, gained 1.6% for the week. 'In the past two to three days, there hasn't been any significant escalation in the Iran-Israel conflict that could choke global trade,' said Siddarth Bhamre, head of institutional research at Asit C Mehta Intermediates. 'Receding concerns prompted some buying interest in the markets.' Elsewhere in Asia, South Korea gained 1.5% while Hong Kong and Taiwan rose 1.3% and 0.2%, respectively. Japan ended 0.2% lower after the country's core inflation hit a two-year high, boosting the chance of interest rate increases. China declined 0.1%. Trump said he will decide on US participation in the Iran-Israel conflict in two weeks. This was seen as the US President taking a step back from recent remarks that indicated the US was likely to take military action against Iran. It came as a relief to markets that were nervous about the likelihood of a wider conflict. Back home, the Volatility Index ( VIX )—the market's fear gauge—fell 4.1% to 13.67 on Friday, indicating traders expect lower risks in the near term. All sectoral indices closed higher on Friday. The Nifty Realty gained 2.1%, and the PSU Bank Index rose 1.6%. The Bank Nifty moved 1.2% higher while private bank, auto and metal indices advanced over 1% each. 'Given that the benchmark was closing lower in the past three sessions and the fall in the broader market yesterday, a rebound was likely, which pushed the market higher,' said Vikas Jain, head of research at Reliance Securities. The benchmark Nifty is holding at the support level of 24,700 and is expected to test 25,200 in the next few weeks. The Nifty Mid-cap 150 and the Small-cap 250 indices rose 1.3% and 0.6%, respectively. In the past week, the mid-cap index shed 0.7% while the small-cap index fell 1.7%. Of the 4,094 shares traded on the BSE, 2,463 advanced, while 1,484 declined. Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth a net Rs 7,941 crore on Friday. This included purchases by global passive funds on account of FTSE rebalancing and a Sensex rejig. Their domestic counterparts sold shares worth Rs 3,050 crore. In June, overseas investors bought shares worth Rs 7,060 crore. 'The markets have not delivered any meaningful gains so far this year, so index-based returns are expected to be sluggish. However, it is seen to be a stock-pickers market,' said Bhamre of Asit C Mehta. 'Investors should be wary of buying, and not chase stock at any value.' Bhamre said timewise consolidations are expected to continue, with bouts of buying and selling activity and Nifty is facing a hurdle at 25,100-25,200 levels. Even if it crosses this threshold, a big surge is not likely as gains might come off amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Govt not releasing relief funds for rain damage: MLA Kamath

Mangaluru: Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath conducted an emergency meeting with officials of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) regarding several issues related to his constituency on Friday. The MLA accused the govt of not releasing relief for emergency repairs of houses damaged due to heavy rains. Speaking at the meeting, the legislator noted that many people within the corporation's jurisdiction are facing severe difficulties due to rain damage. Previously, under BJP rule, a decision was made to allocate up to Rs 40,000 in relief funds for emergency repairs to homes in all 60 wards, with 10 homes per ward, during natural disasters. However, now that the BJP's term ended and the corporation is under the state Congress govt's control through district administration, it is inexcusable that no relief funds have been distributed, said Kamath. No one has the authority to block the previous council's decision, and relief funds should be distributed to the people immediately, he demanded. The MLA directed officials that areas damaged by rain should be repaired immediately, measures should be taken to prevent rainwater from entering homes in the future, and issues related to garbage and drinking water should be resolved quickly. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? The Congress has also unlawfully obstructed this," he alleged. The MLA strongly criticised the current administration for not properly utilising the funds allocated in the previous BJP budget, thus doing an injustice to the common people. Since the corporation's administration came under the state govt's purview, the administrative system has become chaotic, he added. Kamath said that the commissioner of MCC, Ravichandra Naik, has assured to initiate actions systematically without any lapses. MCC executive engineer Naresh Shenoy was present.
