Gujarat Govt Brings Ordinance To Align State GST Law With Centre's 2025 Amendments
Gandhinagar: The Bhupendra Patel-led government has issued the Gujarat Goods and Services Tax (Second Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, introducing significant changes to the Gujarat GST Act, 2017. The move seeks to synchronise the state's indirect tax framework with recent amendments enacted by the Finance Act, 2025, following recommendations of the 55th GST Council meeting.
As the state legislature is not in session, the ordinance was promulgated under Article 213 of the Constitution, allowing the state to push through urgent legislative updates. One of the standout provisions is the introduction of a new Section 148A, which empowers the government to implement a track-and-trace mechanism for certain categories of goods.
This system will require specific items to carry unique identification markings and allow for real-time electronic monitoring across the supply chain. To ensure compliance, a newly inserted Section 122B lays out stringent penalties for violators -- Rs 1 lakh or 10 per cent of the tax due, whichever is greater. The measure is expected to boost supply chain transparency and act as a deterrent to tax evasion.
Apart from this, the ordinance introduces technical and procedural updates to key areas of the Act. These include modifications to Input Tax Credit (ITC) rules, credit note regulations, appeals, and several definitional clauses.
Amendments have been made to Sections 2, 12, 13, 17, 20, 34, 38, 39, 107, 112, and Schedule III of the Act. In some cases, the changes carry a retrospective effect from July 1, 2017, the date GST was rolled out nationwide.
Officials say the amendments are part of a broader effort to harmonise state and central GST provisions, reduce litigation, and improve administrative efficiency. The ordinance will remain in effect until it is ratified by the Gujarat Legislative Assembly in the next session.
The Gujarat GST (Second Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, is significant as it aligns the state's tax framework with national GST reforms introduced by the Finance Act, 2025, ensuring legal uniformity and operational consistency across jurisdictions.
By introducing a track-and-trace mechanism for certain goods and enforcing electronic traceability, the ordinance aims to curb tax evasion, boost supply chain transparency, and modernise compliance systems.

CHENNAI: Actor-turned-politician and Thamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) founder Vijay turned 51 on Sunday. Birthday greetings from several political leaders, particularly from the BJP, triggered speculation on social media about possible attempts to woo the fledgling party into the NDA fold ahead of the 2026 Assembly election. Though she stopped short of an open invitation, former Telangana governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, in a creatively worded greeting using titles of Vijay's films, said the actor should align with those opposing 'evil forces'. BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran, former party state president K Annamalai, and BJP women's wing president Vanathi Srinivasan were among those who extended greetings. Unease in Sena(UBT) over third language
There seems to be growing unease in the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) with several party functionaries wondering which way the party is heading. Party secretary Sanjay Lakhe Patil is the latest to quit the party. On Sunday, two former corporators also joined BJP in Mumbai. Several leaders who are still with the party as well as those who have quit are insisting that it is not just the lure for power but also a sort of lethargy in the party that has been a factor behind their decision. A Mumbai MP points out that no major attempt is being made in the Shiv Sena (UBT) to gain the support of the people on the ground. A classic case, he said, was the issue of the state government making Hindi a 'mandatory' third language. The party cadre thinks that the party should tap into the anger of the people over the issue but the leadership has not given any such directives to them, probably for the fear of losing north Indian voters in some areas. Juicy tales In the 80s, a grand wedding of Vijaysinh Mohite-Patil at Malshiras in Solapur had become a huge talking point. Vijaysinh's father Shankarrao Mohite-Patil was a major name among the bigwigs in cooperative sugar industry and a leading politician from western Maharashtra. 'It was just his way of expressing gratitude,' he insisted. The aghori way A slanging match between Shiv Sena minister Bharat Gogawale and NCP leaders in Raigad has revealed something that has been talked about in political circles for the past couple of years. Shiv Sena and NCP are locked in a bitter tussle over guardian minister's post in Raigad district. In that connection, NCP leaders released a video reportedly showing Gogawale conducting what they claimed was some rituals with sadhus from the aghori sect, an ascetic sect known for unconventional practices. They alleged that Gogawale conducted these rituals to win elections as well as to get the guardian ministership. Gogawale denied the claims, saying he was conducting a regular puja. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut dragged deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde into the controversy alleging he was also interested in such practices and referred to Shinde's frequent trips to Kamakhya temple in Assam. In any case, the leanings of politicians towards tantrik or other rituals in pursuit of power is a tale as old as time.
