A cargo ship carrying around 3000 cars has been abandoned in the Pacific Ocean and left to burn.
The Morning Midas was carrying around 800 electric vehicles from China en route to Mexico when it caught fire about 450km south of Alaska.
The US Coast Guard Alaska Division was called to the scene of the unfolding disaster by a distress call at around 3.15pm on Tuesday (local time) and first witnessed smoke coming from the deck of the vessel, where the EVs were said to be stowed.
The crew of the Morning Midas were unable to get the fire under control and in consultation with the US Coast Guard decided to abandon ship, with all 22 sailors taken to safety.
The incident has underlined the safety issues with transporting electric vehicles whose lithium ion batteries can catch fire and are very hard to put out - sometime burning for two weeks.
The current status of the ship is unknown with the US Coast Guard last witnessing smoke pouring out of the ship.

'As the search and rescue portion of our response concludes, our crews are working closely with the vessel's parent company, Zodiac Maritime, to determine the disposition of the vessel,' said Rear Admiral Megan Dean, commander of the Coast Guard's Seventeenth District.
'We are grateful for the selfless actions of the three nearby vessels who assisted in the response and the crew of motor vessel Cosco Hellas, who helped save 22 lives.'
The 46,800 tone Morning Midas, which flies under the Liberia flag, was built by the Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry Co, in 2006, The Seattle Times reported.
It left the Chinese port of Yantai on May 6, according to Bloomberg. It was en route to Lazaro Cardenas in Mexico.
This isn't the first time a car-carrying ship has burnt down with EVs on board.
In 2023 the Fremantle Highway, a car carrying ship, caught fire with about 3000 cars on board near the Netherlands. It followed the 2022 Felicity Ace disaster – a ship that caught fire in the Atlantic with around 4000 vehicles on board. The crew abandoned ship, setting the enormous car carrier adrift near Portugal. The vessel capsized and sank with a full load of luxury vehicles including 1100 Porsches. A lawsuit took aim at Porsche for the Felicity Ace fire, blaming its electric cars for the fire.
Electric vehicle fires are notoriously difficult to put out.
Porsche spokesman Björn Förster said in 2024 that 'thermal runaway' fires involving electric cars cannot be stopped by conventional means.
'When the car is burning, it will be burning for two weeks,' he said.
Following the Felicity Ace fire, Australian vehicle importer Neville Crichton said he had no doubt the incidents would drive up the retail price of vehicles, as insurance companies had dramatically increased the cost of coverage for cars at sea.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers has flagged the development of a new road-user charge across Australia for drivers of electric vehicles to ensure EV drivers are contributing a fair share to road upgrades. The Treasurer has made no secret of his support for a shake-up of the current system before the election, raising the idea with business leaders in February. But the debate over road-user charges (RUC) for electric vehicles is now set to be reignited as a result of his speech to the national press club. 'We will also continue to work with states and territories on the future of road-user charging,'' Dr Chalmers said. 'All of this represents a big agenda on the supply side of our economy. None of these reforms are simple.' How does fuel excise work? The current rate of fuel excise is 50.8 cents in excise for every litre of fuel purchased. For a typical household with a car running on petrol, the tax costs more than $1200 a year. But the flat sales tax isn't paid by drivers of pure electric vehicles, who simply need to plug in their cars to recharge. While registration and driver's licence fees go to state and territory governments, fuel excise is collected by the federal government. Australian motorists paid an estimated $15.71 billion in net fuel excise in 2023-24, and are expected to pay $67.6 billion over the four years to 2026-27. However, governments have long-warned that a road-user charge will be required to fill the gap in the budget left by declining revenue from the fuel excise, as the petrol and diesel engines in new cars consume less fuel and Australians adopt hybrid and electric cars. What does the AAA say? The Australian Automobile Association (AAA) is calling for a national approach to road-user charging but wants a guarantee the revenue will be earmarked for road upgrades. The AAA backs a distance-based road-user charging as a fairer and more equitable way to fund land transport infrastructure. The 2024 federal budget forecasted a reduction in fuel excise receipts by $470 million over four years from 2024-25. Roadblocks to reform Currently, New South Wales is the only state with firm plans to introduce a road-user charge from 2027 or when EVs reach 30 per cent of new car sales. Plug-in hybrid EVs will be charged a fixed 80 per cent proportion of the full road-user charge to reflect their vehicle type. Western Australia has also stated an intention to implement a road-user charge. Meanwhile, Victoria's electric vehicle levy had to be scrapped following a ruling from the High Court. Two Victorian electric car owners launched a legal challenge on the basis the tax was not legal as it was an excise that only a federal government could impose. They won with the High Court upholding the legal challenge. There have been several false starts to enshrine a road-user charge including in South Australia, where the former Liberal Government planned to introduce a charge for plug-in electric and other zero emission vehicles, which included a fixed component and a variable charge based on distance travelled. It was later pushed back to 2027 due to a backlash before the legislation was ultimately repealed. 'Gold standard' for reform Some experts argue the gold standard for reform is a variable rate that factors in the vehicle's mass, distance travelled, location, and time of day. But there's a big barrier to the Commonwealth imposing those charges because the Constitution prohibits it from imposing taxes that discriminate between states or parts of states. State governments could impose those levies, but as the experience of the Victorian Government underlines, it is legally complex.

Australia's new car market is becoming more diverse, with an increased number of choices available to buyers seeking different powertrains. No longer is it just a choice between diesel and petrol, though they are still the dominant fuel types in the market. Now buyers have options including hybrid (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and the fully-electric (EV) options popularised by brands such as Tesla. New vehicle registrations for the first five months of 2025 show petrol remains the most popular fuel type across all vehicle types (41.2 per cent), followed by diesel (30.1 per cent), hybrid (16.1 per cent), electric (4.8 per cent) and then plug-in hybrid (4.0 per cent). In trend terms, diesel is losing its relevance (sales down 6.6 per cent this year) and pure petrol models are down 9.8 per cent, whereas hybrid sales have jumped 18.3, and plug-in hybrids are up a staggering 208.1 per cent from a very low base, largely in part due to fringe benefits tax breaks which have now been axed. Here we break down the pros and cons of each fuel type. Diesel Cons: Nasty for the environment, and won't suit all driving styles Our market is dominated by diesel dual-cab utes and four-wheel drives. It is less likely to fluctuate in price as much as petrol, and is available in just about every single servo across the country. In other parts of the world, this fuel has effectively been phased out in favour of electrification; research has found that diesel emissions can be harmful to the environment and humans – in fact, European environmental agencies have stated that nitrogen dioxide (NO2) from diesel fumes has killed hundreds of thousands of people in Europe. Modern diesel vehicles have particulate filters that require some high-speed driving regularly to activate the burn-off sequence. That mandatory technology is expensive to repair if you don't drive to suit the requirements. Petrol Pros: Not overly complicated, suits all driving styles Cons: Fluctuating fuel prices make it hard to control running costs There are different types of petrol. Cheaper choices are between the 'regular' 91 RON (research octane number) petrol, or E10, which includes a 10 per cent ethanol blend made from agricultural sources such as corn, wheat, or sorghum. It might be cheaper initially, but E10 fuel has been known to adversely impact some engines over time. Then there are the higher-octane premium petrol choices – 95 RON or 98 RON – which are more expensive, but also more refined and better suited to hi-tech engines and turbocharged powertrains in particular. They can be more fuel efficient, too. The biggest problem with petrol is choosing the right day and the correct location to refill, because pump prices can vary dramatically – up to $0.60c/litre in the space of a few kilometres or picking Wednesday or Thursday to fill up. Hybrid (HEV) Pros: Proven improvements to fuel use and tailpipe emissions Cons: Additional complexity for maintenance, battery life Most hybrids can run on electric power for short periods, doing their best work in stop-start driving where braking will feed energy back to the battery. HEVs have a small battery and an electric motor that can do some of the work, some of the time – either in assisting the engine, or acting alone. Hybrids were popularised by cars such as the Toyota Prius and Camry, and in recent years the Japanese maker has moved to make hybrids the go-to for passenger cars and SUVs. You can't buy a petrol-only Yaris, Corolla, RAV4 or Kluger now. But not all hybrids are the same. Suzuki markets the Swift as a hybrid, but it's a very mild 12-volt system; and Mazda calls its mild-hybrid CX-60 (-70, -80, -90) model ranges 'all hybrid', when they're actually only partly electrified by a 48V system. Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Pros: Longer EV-only driving Cons: Cost, having to plug in There are two ways of looking at plug-in hybrids: the best of both worlds, or the worst. PHEVs have a larger battery pack and more powerful electric motor pure EV driving for longer periods. A few years ago, 50km of EV range was great; today, some PHEVs in Australia claim 180km of EV range. If you can drive to work and back each day and just use electric mode, that's a win. But you're constantly lugging around a petrol engine as well. Most PHEVs allow you to use the engine and battery together for fast acceleration if you need it. PHEVs have gotten more affordable in recent years, but there are still high price premiums to have the tech compared to petrol models. A subset of PHEVs is the range-extender EV (REEV) models which are entering the market, which use a petrol engine as a generator only. Electric (EV) Cons: Expensive, resale questionable, range and charging anxiety Electric cars are exactly that. Cars that run on electricity. They use bigger battery packs to offer long driving range, and while many of us would never actually drive from Sydney to Melbourne, there are no EVs on sale that could do it without recharging. Finding a charging station that isn't occupied and is reliably working is another thing altogether – Australia is big, the distances are huge, and the infrastructure is lagging behind.

Australia's car market is undergoing one of its biggest shake-ups in decades, with some experts calling it the most dramatic shift in automotive history. From surging Chinese car brands and a cooling electric vehicle market to aggressive discounting and oversupply, the car industry is in for a bumpy ride. Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries data shows 1,237,287 new cars were delivered in 2024, a 1.7 per cent increase on the previous year. But that growth is not expected to continue. Cox Automotive Australia corporate affairs manager and analyst Mike Costello said flagging sales should improve in the second half of the year. 'Rate cuts from the RBA will help turn this around in H2, as will an uplift in government fleet post Federal Election,' Mr Costello said. While the first half of 2024 was strong, the closing months revealed a slowdown as manufacturers cleared Covid-era backlogs and Australian buyers felt the economic pressure, from inflation and rising interest rates. Now, in the lead-up to June 30, brands are rolling out aggressive discounts and generous drive-away deals. The discounting we're seeing isn't just due to softening demand but is being driven by improved vehicle supply, global overproduction and intensifying competition. Mr Costello said the industry is at a real 'turning point'. 'We've moved from a seller's market in Covid to a buyer's market now – more in line with historical norm, there's been an improvement in vehicle supply, which has led to the return of incentives and discounting,' he said. Global factories are also playing a role with Chinese automakers facing oversupply in their home market and tightening trade restrictions in Europe and the Unites States. Picture: AFP Australia has become a viable market for Chinese car manufacturers which has lead to aggressive local pricing, especially from brands such as BYD, Chery and GWM. data services Director Ross Booth said much of the automotive growth is coming from electric and electrified vehicles. 'We're seeing a clear shift towards more fuel-efficient vehicles, with strong growth in New Energy Vehicles – which include hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and battery electric vehicles,' Mr Booth said. Hybrid and electric vehicle sales made up just 8 per cent of new cars in 2021, jumping to 25 per cent by the end of 2025. 'Looking ahead, we're predicting NEVs to account for up to 35 per cent of the new vehicle market by the end of 2025, driven largely by increased demand for hybrids and PHEVs,' Mr Booth said. In 2024, more than 172,000 hybrid vehicles were sold in Australia, a 76 per cent year-on-year increase, according to Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) data. EV uptake is slowing down despite new models reaching showrooms each month. The biggest shake-up for the industry comes from China. New brands such as BYD, Xpeng, Zeekr and Chery appeal to cost-conscious buyers. BYD sales are up 103 per cent this year, Chery is up 234 per cent and GWM is up 14 per cent. Despite the growth, Mr Costello said some buyers still have reservations. 'It's clear that while a subset of buyers still have reservations, perhaps in part because of their broader opinions on the Chinese State, an ever-growing cohort are opting for more affordable Chinese cars, swayed by their long warranties, cutting-edge tech, and modern designs,' Mr Costello said.
