Man and woman charged in connection with murder of Wexford man Stephen Ring appear in court
A MAN AND woman have been served with the Book of Evidence in connection with the murder of Stephen Ring, whose body was found in a Wexford quarry in October last year.
Christopher Judge (41) is charged with the murder of Mr. Ring, aged 27, of Oylegate, Wexford, whose body was found in a lake at Carrigfoyle quarry, a remote beauty spot popular with walkers about ten minutes southwest of Wexford town on 27 October last year.
Jane Corcoran (34) is charged with aiding and abetting in a crime, namely murder, contrary to Section 7(2) and (4) of the Criminal Law Act 1997.
Both Mr. Judge and Ms Corcoran have an address at Pairc na nDara, Clonard road, Wexford town.
Prosecuting Sergt. Victor Isdell told Wexford District Court this morning that he served the Book of Evidence on Ms Corcoran this morning.
Sergt. Isdell said the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had directed a return for trial to the Central Criminal Court.
Sergt, Isdell also asked for a continuing remand in custody.
Mr. Eamonn O'Moore, B.L., for the accused consented to the application. An application for free legal aid was also applied for.
Judge John Cheatle explained to Ms Corcoran that the Director of Public Prosecutions had consented that she be tried by indictment in front of a judge and jury at the Central Criminal Court.
He remanded the accused in custody to appear before the next session of the Central Criminal Court in Dublin.

Judge Cheatle also administered the alibi warning to the accused.
Legal aid was assigned in the case.
Ms Corcoran was in court for the hearing, wearing a white top and dark bottoms and was not required to speak during the short hearing.
Sergt. Isdell also gave evidence of having served the Book of Evidence on Christopher Judge this morning.
During the short hearing Judge sat to one side of the court flanked by prison officers wearing a dark top and pants.
Sergt. Isdell told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had directed that the accused be sent forward for trial before a Judge and Jury to the next sitting of Central Criminal Court in Dublin. He also requested that the accused be remanded in custody.
Judge Cheatle gave an 'alibi warning' to the accused informing her that if she intended to use an alibi as a defence, he must notify the prosecution in writing within fourteen days of receiving the Book of Evidence.
Having administered the Alibi warning to the accused, Judge Cheatle remanded him in custody to appear before the next sitting of the Central Criminal Court in Dublin.
Judge was represented by Mr. Timothy Cummings, Solicitor, who deputised for Mr. Frank Buttimer, Solicitor. He said he had no application to make other than an application for free legal aid.
Judge Cheatle granted the application for free legal aid.
27-year-old Stephen Ring had been missing since 15 October 2024. His body was found in a lake at Carrigfoyle quarry two weeks later.

Connors was freed from prison for that offence in 2019 — but he was jailed for 10 months in November of last year after the court heard he'd been residing at an address in Bray, Co. Wicklow but hadn't notified gardai. Wexford, was released from the Midlands Prison on Thursday morning. 42-year-old Connors and his former pal Patrick Moorehouse (38) served 14-year jail sentences for the horrific rape of the young woman in 2006. The two Wexford men forced their way into her house on August 31 that year and raped her while her young child was in an adjacent room. Read more At their trial in December 2008, their victim recounted how the two men forced their way into her home. They had called at her door asking if she wanted to buy a camcorder. Her young child was in the living room when she was pushed into a bedroom and Moorehouse punched her. She was pushed on to the bed and a piece of rope that was on the floor was wrapped around her neck. Connors held the rope while Moorehouse raped her and then the men swapped places. The court heard the mother dared not make much noise as she was conscious of her child in the living room, who was unaware of what was happening. The two rapists dressed and left after threatening her not to tell anybody what had happened. Both Connors and Moorehouse both later denied the rapes in court. They were both unanimously convicted of rape by a jury in the Central Criminal Court in 2008. After he was released from custody for that offence in 2019, Connors continued to offend. In April 2023, Connors was jailed for 10 months at Wexford Circuit Court over a spree of thefts he committed the previous June. On June 29, 2022, Connors broke into a building at Ballydawmore, Tinnacross, Enniscorthy, Wexford for the purposes of theft. That same day, or the following day, at Ballybeg Great, Screen, Co Wexford, Connors stole an Ifor Williams Trailer valued at €5,000. And, on June 30, 2022, at Drumgoold Villas, Enniscorthy, he handled a stolen yellow strimmer knowing that the property was stolen or was reckless as to whether it was stolen. On July 6 2023, at Gorey District Court, he had an additional five months added to his 10 month sentence when he was convicted of stealing an MCM single axle trailer to the value of €1,750 at Coonogue Ballymurphy Carlow on June 24, 2022. It's understood that following his release from prison on Thursday, Connors returned to his native Wexford.

Man (23) caught with cocaine in his underwear ‘suffered racist bullying in school'
The defendant, who has one previous conviction for possession of drugs, was a front seat passenger in a car followed and stopped by Gardaí. A 23-year-old food delivery driver who had cocaine in his underwear has been remanded on continuing bail for a probation report. Nahid Duffy, Dowdalls Crescent, Newry Road, Dundalk, was before the circuit court for sentencing after pleading guilty to possession of 26.9g of cocaine for sale or supply. Further charges of possession of cocaine and possession of 'magic mushrooms' are being taken into consideration. The defendant, who has one previous conviction for possession of drugs, was a front seat passenger in a car followed and stopped by Gardaí. It was stated that he got involved in drug dealing to feed his own cocaine habit. Gda Daniel O'Connor testified that at 12.25am on April 5, 2021, he was observer in an unmarked car when he spotted a Ford Focus driving erratically after it exited Mourne View on the Dublin Road. This car was stopped at McSwiney Street. It contained the driver, Mr Duffy and a third person in the back. Gda O'Connor said he spoke to the defendant who appeared nervous. The car and its occupants were searched. Mr Duffy took responsibility for a bag of 'magic mushrooms' and for €825 cash which was in the centre console. Following his arrest and during a search at the garda station, cocaine was found down the accused's trousers in his underwear. He also admitted using cannabis and CBD. He said the cash was his and admitted having the drugs for sale to fund a cocaine addiction. There was one previous conviction for Section 3 possession of drugs for which a €150 fine was imposed in the district court. For this case the DPP had directed summary disposal on a guilty plea only and the district court accepted jurisdiction. Mr Duffy initially pleaded 'not guilty'. A booklet of mitigation was handed into court on behalf of the defendant. Barrister Stephen Faulkner, instructed by solicitor Ciarán Mulholland, said that Nahid Duffy was of Bangladeshi/Irish descent and had suffered racist bullying in school. He had no trappings of wealth. The money was to feed his addiction. Judge Dara Hayes said that given Mr Duffy's age he would adjourn sentencing to November 11 for a probation report. Man who anally raped woman jailed for five years
A man who anally raped a woman on their first date, despite her telling him repeatedly he did not have her legal consent to do so, has been jailed for five years and three months. Gary Coffey (37), formerly of Leinster Road West, Dublin, was found guilty by a jury of one count of anal rape and one count of sexually assaulting the woman at his home address in January 2023 following a Central Criminal Court trial in March this year. The court heard the victim wished to keep her anonymity and did not wish for Coffey to be named. However, he is not legally entitled to anonymity as there is no link between him and the victim that could lead to her identification. Sentencing Coffey on Thursday, Ms Justice Karen O'Connor said the aggravating factors included that the offending took place in Coffey's home, a place where the victim had been invited and should have been safe. READ MORE The judge noted it was 'important to remember' that consent to sexual activity can be withdrawn. She added the jury heard evidence during the trial that there was consent to certain sexual activity but not to anal sex. The judge set a headline sentence of seven years, which she reduced to six years, having considered the mitigation and Coffey's personal circumstances. She suspended the final nine months of the sentence on strict conditions, including that Coffey place himself under the supervision of the Probation Service for 12 months post-release, and backdated the sentence to when he entered custody in March. The court heard the pair met on an online dating site and had arranged to go for drinks on the evening in question, but Coffey asked the woman to come to his house instead as he needed to shower. Det Garda Seán Carrick told the court the pair had some drinks in Coffey's bedroom as the woman did not wish to meet his mother. They started engaging in consensual sexual activity, but Coffey said he didn't want to use a condom and instead asked the woman if he could have anal sex. The woman refused, saying she had never done this before and had no wish to do so. They had consensual vaginal sex but Coffey kept pestering the woman to let him have anal sex with her. The court heard the woman told Coffey he did not have legal consent to have anal sex with her, later telling gardaí she could not have been clearer in relation to her wishes. At one point, when Coffey went to the bathroom, she got dressed, but Coffey told her she couldn't leave and persuaded her to come back to bed. While there, he anally raped her with his finger. The woman was terrified, and Coffey had his arms around her chest to the point where she felt like she was choking. She managed to escape the bed and left the house quickly. She blocked Coffey on the dating website and WhatsApp, and when he phoned her repeatedly, she blocked his number. She contacted the rape crisis centre and gardaí shortly afterwards and was taken to a sexual assault treatment unit. When Coffey's home was searched, gardaí found five tasers and a quantity of cannabis. He was convicted of these offences and has a total of eight previous convictions, the court heard. In his plea of mitigation, Seamus Clarke SC, defending, said a psychological report prepared for the court indicated that Coffey potentially had a form of autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in addition to mental health issues. Mr Clarke told the court Coffey now accepts he was wrong and didn't have the woman's consent, despite the fact that the probation report concluded that while he accepts the jury's verdict, he is not accepting responsibility for the rape.
