Blackout, then blaze: What led up to the fatal fire that claimed the life of Hamzah Zainudin's mother-in-law in Ipoh home
IPOH, June 20 — The home of Larut MP Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin's in-laws in Kampung Sungai Rapat Tambahan here reportedly experienced a power outage before it caught fire last night.
The blaze claimed the life of Hamzah's mother-in-law, Datin Salmiah Nyak Matt, 84, while her husband, Datuk Abdul Ghani Ngah, 83, suffered from breathing difficulties.
Their son, Ahmad Ikhwan, 57, said his youngest sibling, who lives at the house, told him the incident occurred at about 9.15pm.
'My brother went out to check on the neighbours, thinking there was a blackout in the whole area, but there wasn't.
'Then he saw thick smoke coming out of mum's room. He rushed back in and saw the room was already filled with smoke,' he told reporters here today.
Ahmad Ikhwan said his father is currently receiving treatment at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) here.
He added that his mother's remains will be buried at the Kampung Rapat Jaya Muslim cemetery after funeral prayers at Masjid Jamek Kampung Melayu Sungai Rapat today.
Meanwhile, Hamzah was seen arriving at the HRPB Forensics Department with his wife, Datin Seri Norashikin Abdul Ghani, before accompanying the hearse to the mosque.
Earlier, Ipoh police chief ACP Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said the police received an emergency call at 9.19pm and confirmed that the fire involved a two-storey house.
The incident involved six individuals, four of whom, aged between 18 and 49, escaped unharmed. — Bernama

JPJ finalising investigation papers for bus operator responsible for deadly UPSI accident
BUTTERWORTH, June 20 — The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is finalising the investigation papers for action to be taken in court against the bus company operator involved in the accident that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students Its director-general, Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the investigation is now in the final stages before being handed over to the Deputy Public Prosecutor to decide on the charge recommendation. 'There are two investigation papers that we are preparing (to take action) against the company operator and also the company that leased the bus. Regarding the allegation that the JPJ could not record the bus company's operator's statement because he suffered a heart attack, Aedy Fadly said his side was not informed about the matter. 'He (the bus operator) had a heart attack, it has nothing to do with the JPJ and I have not received any reports saying otherwise. We will still take action; if he goes to the hospital we will wait,' he added. In the incident on June 9, 15 UPSI students died when the bus they were in overturned in an accident at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB), near Tasik Banding, Gerik. The bus carrying 42 university students was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak when it collided with a Perodua Alza before overturning. — Bernama

Man found dead in vehicle outside Klang motorcycle shop, believed to be shot
SHAH ALAM, June 20 — A man was found dead inside a vehicle, believed to have been shot, in an incident outside a motorcycle shop in Meru, Klang, this afternoon. According to Bernama, Klang North district police chief ACP S Vijaya Rao said the authorities were alerted to the incident at 3.37pm, and when they arrived at the scene, they found the body of a 46-year-old local man in the driver's seat. Former Masterchef finalist, ex-husband jailed 34 years for maid's murder

PETALING JAYA : A Masterchef Malaysia finalist and her former husband have been sentenced to 34 years in jail after they were found guilty by the Kota Kinabalu High Court of killing their domestic worker in 2021. Etiqah Siti Noorashikeen Sulang's former husband, Ambree Yunos, was also sentenced to 12 strokes of the rotan while she was exempted because of her gender, Sabah Media reported. Ambree, a contractor, and Etiqah were charged with killing Nur Afiyah Daeng Damin, 28, at their condominium unit in Penampang between Dec 8 and Dec 11, 2021. They were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which provides for the death penalty, or 30 to 40 years' jail, and no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction. Lim said the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubt against the prosecution's case. He said the prosecution had proven three key elements – that the victim died from her injuries, that the injuries were caused by the two accused with intent, and that the pair had acted with a common intention. During sentencing, deputy public prosecutor Dacia Jane Romanus sought the death sentence, saying the case had shocked both Sabah and the nation, and that it warranted the heaviest penalty possible. Dacia said the deceased was a young woman who had left her hometown for honest work amid the pandemic, but ended up losing her life at her workplace. She said the victim suffered daily and was denied her basic human rights. Ambree and Etiqah, who were represented by lawyers Ram Singh and Rakhbir Singh, were previously out on bail.
