ASR dist sets target of 100% organic farming by 2028
Paderu (ASR District): Alluri Sitarama Raju district collector AS Dinesh Kumar has announced an ambitious plan to achieve 100% organic farming across the district by the year 2028. He urged farmers to make effective use of the agricultural machinery provided by the government to achieve significant progress in the agriculture sector. Addressing a meeting held at the Collectorate on Thursday with farmers who received farm machinery at 50% subsidy during the 2024–25 financial year, the collector emphasised the need for planning at the village secretariat level. He directed officials to conduct a survey to assess the actual requirement of farm equipment across various regions. The collector also interacted with farmers to understand the extent of organic farming being practiced and the use of chemical inputs such as urea, potash, and pesticides. Stressing the importance of awareness, he encouraged farmers to adopt sustainable and eco-friendly organic farming methods. He said that steps have already been taken to promote coffee cultivation across 30,000 acres this year. Additionally, under the Employment Guarantee Scheme, saplings of Maddi, Neredu, and Jackfruit will be distributed to farmers. He encouraged land-owning farmers to expand coffee cultivation in the district. District Agriculture Officer SBS Nand stated that a total of Rs 1.26 crore worth of agricultural machinery has been distributed to 351 farmers at a 50% subsidy. This includes Taiwan sprayers for 95 farmers, tractors for 29, power tillers for 59, brush cutters for 13, and power weeders for 155 farmers. Following the meeting, paddy seeds were also distributed to the farmers.

Adarsh Colony razed, Chandigarh administration considers declaring city ‘slum free'
1 2 3 Chandigarh: After the demolition of Adarsh Colony on Thursday, UT administration is considering declaring the city "slum free." Another slum cluster, Shahpur Colony, is still standing but UT officials contend that most of it is located on private land and requires proceedings under the Periphery Act. Shahpur Colony has around 300 shanties spread over four acres of land. Deputy commissioner (DC) Nishant Kumar Yadav said, "We will request the UT administration to declare the city 'slum free' as all the major slum clusters standing on government land have been demolished. Shahpur Colony is predominantly on private agricultural land. The constructions are in violation of the Periphery Act, and consequently, action will proceed as per the Act in the case of Shahpur Colony." In a major crackdown on illegal encroachments on Thursday, the UT administration carried out an eviction and demolition drive at Adarsh Colony, located between sectors 53 and 54. The drive led to the recovery of around 12 acres of prime government land estimated to be worth Rs 350 crore. There were around 800 hutments in the colony. "The administration reiterates its commitment to ensuring planned and legal urban growth while protecting the rights and safety of all citizens. Residents are once again urged to refrain from unauthorised construction and occupation, as the administration continues to pursue similar action across other identified areas in the city," said a UT spokesman. BOX: 'No effort made to rehabilitate us' Many of the evicted residents said that the administration made no effort to rehabilitate them even when they had requisite documents. However, UT officials contended that despite previous notices, several structures and makeshift dwellings continued to encroach upon government land. "The administration served multiple notices and warnings to unauthorised occupants in the recent past, providing ample opportunity for voluntary compliance. Some petitioners approached the high court against the demolition drive, but the petition was dismissed," Yadav said. BOX: Reclaiming govt land In the last two months, the administration has demolished two major slum clusters. On May 6, Janta Colony in Sector 25 was demolished. Ten acres of encroached government land was reclaimed during the drive, during which more than 10,000 residents were removed and 2,500 structures demolished. In April, UT reclaimed six acres of land by demolishing Sanjay Colony in Industrial Area Phase 1. During the drive, 1,200 hutments were demolished and around 6,000 people were evicted. Kochi: The shipwrecks off the Kerala coast pose a serious threat to the marine ecosystem and coastal environment, according to an affidavit filed in the Kerala high court on behalf of the director general of shipping. The affidavit, submitted by Shitesh Ranjan, ship surveyor-cum-deputy director general (technical) in the office of the mercantile marine department, Kochi, was in response to the PIL filed by former MP T N Prathapan. The petition seeks a comprehensive compensation package for fishermen and other stakeholders affected by the recent shipwrecks off Kerala. The affidavit highlighted that adrift containers from the cargo vessel MSC ELSA 3 not only pose a navigational hazard but also constitute a grave environmental risk, especially considering the hazardous nature of some of the cargo. As per the cargo manifest, the vessel was carrying 13 containers of Class 4.3 dangerous goods under the IMDG Code, specifically, calcium carbide, which is classified as hazardous and environmentally sensitive. The wreck is situated at a depth of 51 metres near the Indian coastline, and the presence of bunker fuel in the sunken vessel heightens the risk of an oil spill. The affidavit also stated that shoreline clean-up operations are currently being undertaken by the Marine Emergency Response Services (MERC). Regarding the fire onboard the Singapore-flagged container vessel Wan Hai 503, the affidavit noted that the ship was carrying approximately 143 IMDG-classified containers, including hazardous materials such as flammable liquids, flammable solids, toxic substances, corrosives, and other dangerous goods. Additionally, the vessel carried around 2,000 tonnes of heavy fuel oil and 240 tonnes of diesel oil in tanks near the fire-affected zones. State seeks 77.08 crore as interim claim The state govt has sought an interim relief of Rs 77.08 crore in its first interim claim report, in connection with the capsize of cargo vessel MSC ELSA 3 off the Kerala coast. The claim includes compensation for the loss of livelihoods suffered by fishermen between May 25 and June 1. According to an affidavit filed by environment department special secretary Seeram Sambasiva Rao, Rs 54.93 crore has been claimed for livelihood losses, while Rs 22.15 crore has been sought towards the expenditure incurred in managing the aftermath of the incident. The affidavit further states that the first interim claim report will be forwarded to director general of shipping within three days.
