Survivors try to maintain a semblance of life among those infected by a rage virus in Danny Boyle's horror sequel "28 Years Later."
In 2002, the British horror hit '28 Days Later' helped repopularize the zombie subgenre, leading to post-apocalyptic entertainment like 'The Walking Dead' and 'The Last of Us.'
Ever since, director Danny Boyle has been saying to anyone who'll listen that the people infected with a rage virus aren't zombies. They're just like us but sick, not undead. And in the new sequel '28 Years Later' (in theaters June 20), the infected have changed a lot, even showing qualities that hint they're much more than mindless, flesh-eating machines.
'Obviously, 28 years is quite a compressed amount of time for evolution to really establish itself. But they are evolving just like humans evolve,' Boyle says.

With '28 Years Later,' Boyle and original writer Alex Garland have returned to this post-apocalyptic world with something akin to the recent 'Halloween' revamp. The new film is a direct follow-up to '28 Days,' pretty much ignoring the events of 2007's '28 Weeks Later,' and begins a planned trilogy that will continue with director Nia DaCosta's '28 Years Later: The Bone Temple' (in theaters Jan. 16).
Garland sees 'Days' and 'Years' as coming-of-age stories of a sort with 'a young person in a state of innocence who's then having that innocence robbed,' the writer says. In the original film, it's bicycle courier Jim (Cillian Murphy), who wakes up in a hospital after an accident finding a London devoid of people. He learns the hard way how much the world has changed since the rage virus started, with the infected running and biting at him, and Jim in a sense 'becomes an infected' by giving in to his own rage to save people important to him.
'28 Years Later' fast-forwards nearly 30 years, with the rage virus contained to the borders of the United Kingdom. Twelve-year-old Spike (Alfie Williams) lives with his parents, Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Isla (Jodie Comer), in a small, heavily defended community on Holy Island. In an old-fashioned society where everyone has a job to do, children are taught what life used to be like and 'the infected play a role in their mind. They're being told that they will one day meet them,' Boyle says. "So they mythologize them a little bit.'
Jamie takes Spike on a rite of passage to the mainland for the first time to kill an infected. Father and son barely make it back alive, but when Spike learns of a mysterious doctor who could help his sick mom with her undiagnosed ailment, he returns to a dangerous landscape on a journey more about protecting life than taking it.
'He chooses not to follow in his father's footsteps,' Boyle says of Spike. "That's one of the things that always gives us hope with teenagers. Even though they might drive you mad, they want their own challenges."
Spike ultimately meets the man he's searching for, Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes). He's built a Bone Temple of skulls as a memorial to victims of the infected, and Kelson sees survivors and infected people as alike.
'A key thing about how we approached the zombie genre was we didn't make them supernatural. They're not reanimated dead people. If you were a doctor, that would be the correct way to look at it," Garland says. One of themes of the movie is "how much should a sick person be differentiated from a healthy person? And why is that differentiation fair?'
Over three decades, the infected of '28 Days Later' – the fast-running "zombies" that freaked moviegoers out in 2002 – have evolved and organized. Most of them are still scary quick, skinny and now naked. Bigger, stronger Alphas have emerged like the leader Samson, while 'Slow-Lows' are fat, bloated and 'closer to the ground,' Boyle says. 'They expend a lot less energy but they're nevertheless very dangerous if they're provoked or disturbed or stimulated.'
And like the original film, the '28 Years Later' trilogy explores humanity in inhuman times among its pockets of survivors.
Whereas Christopher Eccleston's Major Henry West in the original film "28 Days" is a soldier "who has gone crazy and collapsed into a more violent, degenerative state than the infected have,' Garland explains, Kelson is the inverse to him and creates "a different kind of commentary on people, which has something to do with being reasonable and compassionate in the face of an incredibly difficult situation."

I've ditched HR to free my company from the social-justice police

'I want to be the first company without HR.' It was just a throwaway comment I made this month at a conference called Freedom Fest — but the audience went wild, and the line went viral in an Instagram post with over 5 million views. 'They produce nothing,' I continued. 'They monitor our words. They tell us what we can and cannot say. Advertisement 'They inhibit creativity. It's bad for business.' At my own start-up — XX-XY Athletics, the only brand standing up for the protection of women's sports — I'll be damned if I'm going to let the ladies of 'The View' run around policing my employees' conversations. We started with no Human Resources department a year ago, and we'll continue with no HR as we grow. Advertisement My statement touched a nerve because anyone who has worked in corporate America has been subjected to the censorious 'Head Girl' rule-making emanating from HR departments. And they are tired of it. When I started my business career in the early 1990s, HR was responsible for recruiting, benefits and payroll — that was it. As I moved up the ladder and found myself in executive meetings, the HR leader weighed in last on key business decisions, if at all. Advertisement Thirty years on, HR leaders are calling themselves 'Chief Human Resources Officers,' and they proclaim their power with reckless and off-topic abandon. HR departments today are packed with Tracy Flicks, the way-too-eager high schooler played by Reese Witherspoon in the movie 'Election.' Flick is the archetypal 'Head Girl,' a term derived from the British school system and its tight hierarchy of internal discipline — ambitious and officious with little actual skill or intellect. Hand-raisers like these are not selected to lead for intelligence or ability, but for conscientiousness and a willingness to uphold 'the rules.' Advertisement That was fine when HR had no power. But now, after yearning for a seat at the table, HR's midwit elites have found a way to exert increasing influence in the corporate environment — leveraging social-justice buzzwords to accrue power and (what else?) make more rules. In the 2020s, HR asserts its newly found clout with tyrannical zeal. When I interviewed in 2023 for a CEO job at an $8 billion retailer, I made it all the way to the end of the corporate leadership receiving line, successfully fielding queries on my business acumen and brand-building accomplishments. My last interview was with the HR representative on the board. Her first question: 'Will you apologize for what you've done?' By 2023 I'd been proven right. That didn't matter to the HR lady. I'd violated her tightly enforced script. Advertisement I didn't apologize, and I didn't get the job. Over the last two decades, HR has gone from operational support to Operation Head Girl Hall Monitor. They force-feed trainings about acceptable language; they make 'merit' out to be racist; and they set hiring criteria based on risk avoidance rather than excellence. But hiring people who don't offend anyone won't result in employees who take initiative and make things. Advertisement Am I being sexist in calling them Head Girls? In 2023, 76% of HR managers in the United States were female. The shoe fits. (And yes, men can be Head Girl types, too.) British academic Bruce Charlton explains the Head Girl 'can never be a creative genius because she does what other people want by the standard they most value.' That's why the Head Girls of HR made everyone add pronouns to their email signatures starting around 2020: Social standards. Not because it drove the business. Advertisement No, these time-suckers shift focus away from the business. Front-of-house employees — builders, makers and service providers — must spend a significant amount of time thinking about the words they use rather than their actual jobs. Critics of my viral comment pushed back at me: 'You need HR to avoid unnecessary risk!' they chorused. Right. That's the fear HR leverages to maintain its unearned influence. Advertisement Risk avoidance means hiring mediocre people with no opinions who never offend anyone. Those hires won't take my one-year-old start-up to big-brand status. I want big thinkers with creative minds. Sometimes these folks are disruptive. But there are no new products or breakthrough marketing campaigns without them. My company is a walking, talking HR violation. We 'misgender' all day long. In fact, speaking truth (as I call it) is required to work here. We're not in school anymore. We don't need a persnickety Miss Manners etiquette-enforcer telling us to be nice. I'll continue to go it alone without HR. I'll assume the so-called risk so I can lead in my own voice. Fuerza Regida on making history, performing in LA amid turmoil

Beyond hard work and humility, manifestation has been part of Fuerza Regida's recipe for success. Frontman Jesús "JOP" Ortiz Paz remembers watching "Tengo Talento, Mucho Talento" (the Latino version of "America's Got Talent") with his parents at home in San Bernardino, California, and saying, "I'm going to be on that TV. I'm going to be right there," he tells USA TODAY. "Ah, you're crazy," Paz, 28, says his parents responded. That was during a June 2023 interview with USA TODAY ahead of Fuerza Regida's sold-out show at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, part of their "Otra Peda" tour. Fast forward two years, and the band finds itself reaching new career heights. Fuerza Regida − Paz, along with Samuel Jáimez, Khrystian Ramos, José "Pelón" García and Moisés López − makes its historic debut at both New York's Madison Square Garden June 20 and LA's Hollywood Bowl June 21. They'll be performing their latest album, the 12-track "111XPANTIA," in its entirety. "Us bringing corridos to these venues, I'm pretty sure it's for the first time, so we're really happy that our genre is growing and growing," Paz says ahead of the shows. "We're excited, we've been breaking all these records and making history." Interview: Fuerza Regida on Mexican music going global and why they're the pioneers In May, the all-genre Billboard 200 album charts, saw for the first time Spanish-language albums in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots at the same time − Bad Bunny's "Debí Tirar Más Fotos" and Fuerza Regida's "111XPANTIA," respectively. More than that, it marked Fuerza Regida's highest-charting album to date, and the highest-charting Spanish-language album by a duo or group, or a regional Mexican music album, ever, according to Billboard. With nearly a decade in the industry under their belt, reaching the top of the charts isn't new territory for the group members anymore. Their 2023 album "Pa Las Baby's Y Belikeada" peaked at No. 2 on Billboard's Latin Albums chart and reached the Top 15 of the Billboard 200, and also earned them a pair of awards — Top Duo/Group and Top Latin Duo/Group at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards. With 2024's "Pero No Te Enamores," the band's eighth studio album, Fuerza Regida dabbled in Jersey club music, reggaeton, hip-hop and bachata and embarked on a 76-date tour. Manifestation brought Fuerza Regida new album '111XPANTIA' to life Before Fuerza Regida made its mark in arenas and stadiums all over the United States and Latin America, the band was performing small gigs in backyards and at quinceñeras in 2016. Now, the band boasts numerous chart-topping albums, sold-out stadium and arena shows, multiple brand deals (including their latest partnership with Dos Equis for the Ni Perdón Ni Permiso campaign) and performances on late-night talk shows like "Jimmy Kimmel Live." In January, Paz became the first performer to bring regional Mexican music to Paris Men's Fashion Week during KidSuper's runway show ("It was my first time in Europe and we love fashion as well, so I was like a little kid at Toys 'R Us," Paz says). In 2018, he founded the independent record label Street Mob Records, which has signed other rising stars in the genre, including Chino Pacas, Calle 24, Clave Especial, and more. Still, Fuerza Regida keeps both feet planted on the ground. "We just keep on working hard, that's the key," Paz says. "We just act like we still haven't done anything − act like you haven't hit, act like you just started." López, who plays tololoche for the band, echoed a similar sentiment: "(We) stay working 24/7 and stay hungry," he says. "I've been saying that since I started my career, we work harder than a lot of other artists out there, and that's why I think we're more successful," Paz adds. "We don't just do the artist stuff. I also have my record label, and everything we have is because of all the hard work we've put in. So, of course, you gotta' have a little bit of talent, but the rest is all hard work." Paz and López also break down the meaning of the album's name, "111XPANTIA," which serves as a double entendre for manifestation. "111" is usually regarded as an "angel number" or a lucky sign whenever one comes across it, and "ixpantia" is the Nahuatl word for manifestation. "It was time to name an album that," Paz says. "Manifesting has been ever since I can remember. Everything I've wanted, I've almost got and the days go by, you want more things, you want better things for your family and better things for your business." The entire project is dedicated to the manifestation of dreams and constant hard work. It also marks a return to their corrido roots featuring stand-out tracks like "Peliculiando," "Por Esos Ojos," "Marlboro Rojo" and "Godfather." 'We've always fought for our music and our culture' In recent years, Latin musicians including Peso Pluma, Grupo Firme, Grupo Frontera, Junior H, Àngela Aguilar and Becky G have worked to put Mexican music, in all its variations, on the mainstream map. It's no longer just regional, as it's long been categorized in award show categories, but rather international and intentional. "We've just always fought for our music and our culture" to be respected like any other genre, Paz says. "It took a little longer for Mexican music," he adds. "Back in the day, Mexican music was just a little more in this bubble, and I feel like a couple years back, Fuerza Regida and a bunch of other pioneers − I don't want to just include myself − made this genre what it is now." Paz recognizes that many other bands and solo artists went through their own struggles and battles to be recognized, but now "we're accomplishing the goal of making our culture hit now." How Fuerza Regida shows up for the immigrant community during turmoil Although the show must go on, Fuerza Regida's Hollywood Bowl debut comes at a raw time in the city amid ongoing protests rejecting the continued presence of federal immigration enforcement. On June 10, Fuerza Regida shared a statement on Instagram, sending their "love and strength to our Latino community during this difficult time." "We've been deeply moved by the events of this past week," the band wrote. "These are our people, our fans, the very communities that inspire our music. We see your strength and resilience." Days later, they released limited-edition merch and 100% of profits from sales were donated to "support our communities impacted by the recent ICE raids," read the band's Instagram post. Earlier this year, after Los Angeles was dealt another blow with the wildfires that ravaged the neighborhoods of Pacific Palisades and Altadena, the band helped provide shelter to 270 people. "Family is No. 1, and I feel like the way you're raised, it reflects a lot on how you're going to be and my parents raised me pretty well and taught me to always care about the community," Paz says. "If we're blessed, we gotta' share a little bit of the blessings."
