D-backs pile up extra-base hits in rout of Mariners

Reuters11-06-2025

June 11 - Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Gabriel Moreno and Alek Thomas homered, Corbin Carroll hit a pair of RBI triples, and the Arizona Diamondbacks pulled away from the Seattle Mariners for a 10-3 victory in Phoenix on Tuesday.
Moreno hit a three-run homer to ignite a five-run sixth after missing the previous three games with a right hand contusion. Carroll added his second triple and scored to cap the sixth for a 9-2 lead.
Carroll had his second two-triple game of the season and leads the majors with eight. Arizona's Ketel Marte extended his on-base streak to 23 games with a single and two walks.
Rowdy Tellez homered and singled while Randy Arozarena also went deep for the Mariners, who have lost seven of eight. Julio Rodriguez, Cole Young and Jorge Polanco had two hits apiece.
Thomas, who homered in the eighth, had two singles and a walk and scored four runs from the ninth spot in the order. Gurriel and Josh Naylor each had two hits for the D-backs, who have won two in a row after a three-game losing streak.
D-backs right-hander Brandon Pfaadt (8-4) gave up two runs and nine hits in five-plus innings, leaving after Arozarena hit a 435-foot homer leading off the sixth and Tellez followed with a 440-foot blast. Pfaadt struck out four and walked one.
In a statistical quirk, Pfaadt is tied with San Francisco's Robbie Ray for the NL lead in victories but ranks last among the 37 qualified starters with a 5.50 ERA. Pfaadt had given up 14 runs (13 earned) in three innings over his previous two starts combined.
Seattle's Logan Evans (3-2) yielded four runs on seven hits in five innings, with five strikeouts and two walks. He was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday to make the start after the Mariners placed Bryce Miller (elbow) on the injured list.
Arizona's Bryce Jarvis tossed three innings of one-run ball for his first career save after being recalled from Triple-A Reno earlier in the day.
Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, who leads the majors with 26 homers, had a chance for No. 27 taken away by left fielder Gurriel in the third inning. Raleigh hit a deep fly to the opposite field that Gurriel caught with a leap at the fence. Raleigh has nine homers in his last 13 games.
Carroll tripled home a run and scored on Geraldo Perdomo's sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead in the third. Gurriel hit his 10th homer in the fourth for a 3-0 edge, and Naylor doubled in a run for a 4-0 advantage in the fifth.

Awkward moment fan's drink explodes over Livvy Dunne after he dropped it while giving her a hug

Former LSU gymnast Livvy Dunne made a splash at Fanatics Fest on Friday. The 22-year-old was doused in Sprite as she arrived at the event's second instalment, which brings a host of celebrities and sports fans to New York City. Tom Brady, Russell Wilson, Stephen A. Smith, Jaxson Dart and Peyton Manning were also among the star-studded attendees on Friday. But none had a more unfortunate start to their day than Dunne, who was filmed hugging a man after arriving in New York. He was holding a can of Sprite and, unfortunately for the former gymnast, the man let go of the drink while embracing Dunne. After the can hit the floor, it sent the soft drink spraying in all directions - including over Dunne. Dunne shocked social media when she appeared to make a sexual reference earlier on Friday Thankfully, however, Dunne - who was wearing blue jeans and a white sleeveless top - saw the funny side. She even apologized for her role in the chaos. It wasn't the first time on Friday that Dunne had gone viral. Earlier, the ex-gymnast sent social media into a spin after appearing to make a steamy sexual reference about herself and actress Madelyn Cline. It came after a user on X described the upcoming College World Series between LSU and Coastal Carolina as the 'Madelyn Cline vs Livvy Dunne Bowl', given the pair's previous education at the rival schools. The fairly innocent comment was then taken deep into left-field by Dunne, who surprisingly replied: 'Gooner World Series'. Fans were immediately left stunned by the apparent sexual reference posted by the gymnastics icon, with one writing: 'This can't be real.' Another added, 'had to check three times that this wasn't a parody account,' while a third noted: 'She get hacked???'

This fight is going to be one of my best fights on my record."Alvarez, 34, may be the younger man by three years but having made his professional debut aged 15 and with 11 world titles, 27 world-title fights and 67 bouts in total under his belt, the Mexican has been cast as the man to pass the torch to Crawford."He's not going to beat me, don't worry about it," Alvarez answered at one stage, which drew a laugh and a smile from Crawford, who replied: "For sure them belts are coming home with me."Twenty-six bouts separate the rivals, but Crawford too has a record most fighters could only dream of with 19 consecutive world-title bout and a two-weight undisputed promised he would become the first male three-weight undisputed champion, in a classy nod to his American counterpart Claressa Shields, who has already achieved the feat in the women's was equally confident, describing himself as a "winner" and telling Crawford: "You don't look different.""I'm different. Nicolas Jackson sent off as Chelsea implode against Flamengo

Nicolas Jackson was sent off as Chelsea crashed to a 3-1 loss to Flamengo at the Club World Cup. Pedro Neto fired the Blues ahead early on but Enzo Maresca's side imploded in the second half in Philadelphia. The Blues conceded twice and saw Jackson dismissed for a horror tackle in the space of just six minutes after the break. Their woes were compounded when Wallace Yan wrapped up the scoring late on, adding to earlier goals from fellow substitute Bruno Henrique and veteran Danilo. The result – played out in front of a crowd of 54,019 at Lincoln Financial Field – left Chelsea with a win and a loss from their two outings in Group D having earlier looked set to take a giant stride towards the last 16. It made for a disappointing full debut for new striker Liam Delap, who had been brought into the side for Jackson, but a notable scalp for Flamengo manager Filipe Luis, formerly of the London club. The game got off to lively and feisty start yet while the Brazilians looked more at ease in the heat – 27C at kick-off – they struggled to carve out clear-cut openings. Former Chelsea midfielder Jorginho did fire over in the early stages but Robert Sanchez was not troubled in goal. Despite a lack of possession and a subdued performance from Cole Palmer out wide, Chelsea offered a threat on the counter-attack. Delap went close to opening the scoring when he burst clear and forced Agustin Rossi to palm over. Chelsea grabbed the lead when Neto benefited from a fortunate ricochet after being struck by an attempted clearance from Wesley. The Portuguese broke clear from halfway and calmly tucked away his second goal of the tournament from the edge of the box. Neto almost created another for Delap but his pull-back was cut out by Wesley and Chelsea had a penalty appeal rejected after Enzo Fernandez went down in the area. Levi Colwill headed clear off the line after a Flamengo free-kick was slung into the area but it was not until the second period the Brazilians began to cause serious problems. Gerson should have equalised when he cut back inside Colwill to create an opportunity but his mishit shot was intercepted by Trevoh Chalobah. It rebounded to Gonzalo Plata but he somehow poked wide. Chelsea were inches away from a second when Leo Pereira, under pressure from Delap, clipped the ball narrowly past his own post but the Blues had little control. They had another escape when Sanchez tipped over from Plata. The equaliser came just after the hour when Plata headed back across goal and Henrique raced in to pounce at the back post. Chelsea were reeling and were stung again just moments later as Henrique turned provider to head back a corner for Danilo to volley in. Chelsea's capitulation continued as Jackson, just minutes after coming off the bench, was given his marching orders for a reckless challenge in which he caught Ayrton Lucas on the shin with force. Yan rubbed salt in the wounds seven minutes from time when he readjusted and tucked home after getting in the way of a shot from team-mate Plata.
