Second man charged over fires at properties linked to UK PM Starmer

Al Arabiya20-05-2025

British police said a Romanian national was charged with arson offenses on Tuesday, the second man to be charged in an investigation into a series of fires at properties linked to Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Police were called to a blaze at a property belonging to Starmer in north London earlier in May. No one was injured, but the entrance to the home was damaged.
Two further fires on separate days, targeting a nearby flat and a car — both linked to the prime minister — are also part of the investigation.
A 21-year-old Ukrainian, Roman Lavrynovych, was charged over the fires last week.
Police said the Romanian national, 26-year-old Stanislav Carpiuc, will appear in a London court later on Tuesday charged with conspiracy to commit arson with intent to endanger life. He had been arrested at London's Luton Airport on Saturday.
Police also arrested a third man in connection with the fires on Monday. He remains in police custody.
Counterterrorism police have led the investigation given the prime minister's involvement.
Starmer, who has lived at his official 10 Downing Street residence in central London since becoming prime minister last July, has called the incidents 'an attack on all of us, on our democracy and the values we stand for.'

Attack on Belfast Islamic center during evening prayers investigated as hate crime

A 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of a terror offense in Northern Ireland for allegedly tossing a suspicious device into the Belfast Islamic Center during evening prayers, police said Saturday. No one was injured in the Friday attack but Assistant Chief Constable Anthony McNally of the Police Service of Northern Ireland said ammunition officers determined the object was capable of causing harm. He didn't specify what kind of device it was. McNally said detectives were looking into whether it was a hate crime. No one else was believed to be involved in the attack. 'It is important to stress that, while the suspect has been arrested under the Terrorism Act, the motive for the attack has not yet been established,' McNally said. Police provided no other information about the suspect but said he was in custody. Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn called it a 'shameful attack' and local politicians condemned it as cowardly. 'Hatred of this sort has no place in Northern Ireland,' Benn said.

Ukraine asks allies to allocate 0.25 percent of GDP to boost its weapon production

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on Ukraine's Western partners to allocate 0.25 percent of their GDP to helping Kyiv ramp up weapons production and said the country plans to sign agreements this summer to start exporting weapon production technologies. In remarks released for publication by his office on Saturday, Zelenskyy said Ukraine was in talks with Denmark, Norway, Germany, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Lithuania to launch joint weapon production. 'Ukraine is part of Europe's security and we want 0.25 percent of the GDP of a particular partner country to be allocated for our defense industry and domestic production,' Zelenskyy said. As the war with a bigger and better-equipped Russia has intensified in recent weeks, Ukraine's need for new weapons and ammunition is constantly growing. This year Kyiv had secured $43 billion to finance its domestic weapon production, Zelenskyy said. Member nations of the NATO military alliance are expected to meet next week in The Hague, to discuss higher defense spending. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has proposed that countries should each agree to spend 5 percent of their GDP on defense and security measures. Zelenskyy said he was likely to visit the NATO summit, adding that several meetings with Western leaders had been set up on the sidelines. He also said that he hoped to meet U.S. President Donald Trump. Last week, Zelenskyy attended the Group of Seven summit in Canada as he sought to discuss stronger sanctions against Russia and more military support for Ukraine with Trump there. But he failed to meet with the U.S. President as Trump left a day early for Washington to address the Israel-Iran conflict. Ukraine currently covers about 40 percent of its defense needs with domestic production, and the government is constantly looking for ways to increase production further. Kyiv plans to launch joint weapon production outside of the country and will start exporting some of its military production technologies, Zelenskyy said. 'We have launched a program 'Build with Ukraine' and in summer we will sign relevant agreements to start exporting our technologies abroad in the format of opening production lines in European countries,' Zelenskyy said. The discussions focused on producing different types of drones, missiles, and potentially artillery, he said.

Negotiations between Europeans and Iran to speed up, Macron says

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Saturday he had received a call from his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian and that they had agreed to accelerate negotiations between European powers and Iran over its contested nuclear program. 'I am demanding: Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons, and it is up to it to provide every assurance that its intentions are peaceful,' Macron said on social media X. 'I am convinced that there is a way out of the war and to avoid greater dangers.'
