The Quality Conundrum—Luxury Fashion Isn't What It Used To Be

As the price of luxury goods continues to rise—a pattern which first emerged post-pandemic but persists due to the impending recession within the United States and the country's shifting tariff policies that affect the way goods are manufactured, shipped and sold—the cost of shopping lavishly has begun to surpass the level of quality consumers expect from their high-priced purchases.
Desperate for answers and amendments from the brands they used to love, consumers are taking to social media to speak out against luxury giants as they continue to charge more for less and devalue their once loyal customers.
Acting as the unofficial face for such distain is TikTok user Janet Lin. Known by social media users as @janetlinxo, the New York City-based content creator has garnered a slew of attention for her series of recently published videos—the most popular of which currently sitting at 3.4 million views—that detail the dramatic decline of her Goyard Saint Louis GM tote bag.
The bag—constructed from the brand's signature brightly colored Goyardine canvas and available for a minimum price just shy of two thousand dollars—was documented by Lin as having fallen apart after being worn outside for a few hours in the heat. In one video, Lin dramatically holds her cobalt blue Goyard tote up to the camera and pulls the leather-bound top handles apart to reveal they've melted together. In another clip, Lin shows off the blue staining on her otherwise clean white T-shirt as a result of the bag's bleeding blue finish melting off in the same mild weather conditions.
While some users unleashed their frustrations towards Lin in the form of lengthy rebuttals within the video's comment section—citing the usage instructions found on the brand's product page that advise the wearer to 'Avoid contact with water, greasy or oily products, make-up and perfumes' as well as 'Protect the item from damp, extended exposure to artificial, natural light or intense heat' as logical reasons for the bag's current state—many individuals were quick to come to her defense, agreeing that no item of that price point should become damaged to the point destruction after one wear in the sun.
Goyard could not be reached for comment.
Despite the videos published by Lin being some of the most popular pieces of content that depict unexplainable damage to designer goods, similar antidotes and visual testimonials are taking up space within the fashion content published online, with each gaining more traction than the last and acting as the catalyst for a larger conversation around the quality of luxury goods—with modern critiques emphasizing the inferiority of such goods in comparison to the high price points they are offered at to the consumer and calling for the boycott of affected brands.
While currently newsworthy, this pattern of luxury decline is not new. In an article published in late November of 2024, Forbes cited the Fall 2024 Bain-Altagamma Luxury Goods World Wide Market Study to illustrate the surprising drop in sales within the luxury goods sector, saying, 'For the first time since 2008, excluding the 2020 Covid-19 year, the personal luxury goods market declined, dropping 2% from an historic high of $387 billion (€369 billion) in 2023 to $381 billion (€363 billion) at current exchange rates.'
In addition to referencing the study, Forbes included a number of casual effects that impacted the luxury goods market to the point of decline, the most notable of which—especially as it relates to the example illustrated above—was the misalignment of price and value. Similar to Lin's frustration over her pricey Goyard bag depreciating in value as soon as she began to use it, many consumers are frustrated with the luxury market's consistently growing prices for products that stay stagnant in quality.
However, despite these challenges, the same market study offered a simple solution for luxury brands to revitalize their businesses and recapture the attention of consumers: get back to basics.
'To secure future growth, brands will need to rethink their luxury equations, re-establishing creativity and blending old and new playbooks,' the study stated. 'This includes rediscovering their essence and embracing the foundational pillars of the industry: desirability fueled by craftsmanship, creativity and distinctive brand values; meaningful, personalized and culturally-resonant customer connections and experiences.'
In short, as rising prices for once accessible luxury goods continues as an inevitability, brands not only have the opportunity to secure their customer base with the obvious usage of high quality materials, but with the amplified infusion of heritage, identity and singularity. In this new era of consumerism that amplifies the cost of all goods, shoppers are looking for luxury built off of more than just high prices—leaving it up to brands to demonstrate their value.

For decades, a dual carriageway in Cambridgeshire was synonymous with slow-moving traffic, jack-knifed lorries and long, long delays. That changed in May 2020, when the new A14 opened ahead of schedule, a12-mile (19km) Cambridge to Huntingdon three-lane carriageway. More than five years after the £1.5bn road improvement scheme was completed, what do locals think - and what is its legacy? The BBC has been finding out. "Driving to Stansted Airport could potentially be a two-hour trip, just to get there for a pick-up or drop off - now it's a 45-minute journey," said Stuart Gibbons. The co-founder of Le Mark, a Huntingdon-based company, is a huge fan of the improvements. "We are a business that is rural, we're in a nice part of the county, but we need to get up and down the motorways when we need to," he said. The company produces tapes, custom-printed labels, professional dance floors and crew-wear for the entertainment industry, including TV, touring bans, theatre, stage and performance. It buys and sells internationally, which is why getting to Stansted Airport is so important. But Mr Gibbons can also confidently tell customers in north London that Le Mark can drop off items within an hour and a half. "The difference is we can make an appointment we are fairly certain we can meet," he said. Heidi Brown has been working for Le Mark for three years - and commuting along the A14 for much longer than that. The upgraded road has transformed her journey to work. "Historically, it was quite a lot of congestion, it wasn't the easiest of journeys - I'd often have to find alternative routes to work," the purchasing assistant said. "Now I can confidently leave knowing I can get to work and I don't have to allow more time in advance." Her colleague, social media content creator Charlotte Brooks, agreed, adding: "I'd hear [the old A14} a lot near our house, but it's a lot better now, much more quiet." "It's a hugely important bridge, the level of vehicles using this bridge is massive - from villages like Oakington, Cottenham, Longstanton and Willingham," said Luis Navarro. The newly elected Liberal Democrat county councillor has found himself negotiating with National Highways over settling embankments on land around the Bar Hill bridge at junction 25. The new layout there was part of the A14 project, but now locals are saying they feel a bump when they drive over it and Mr Navarro is "concerned it could become a hazard". "The technical term is the bridge is 'settling' and National Highways have now attached monitoring devices to it, to provide data on how fast or if the bridge is still settling," he said. "It's important we are on top of this issue... it's a major artery and the idea is we try to get a permanent solution to reassure drivers that it's safe." A National Highways spokesperson said it had been monitoring the bridge for more than a year, initially with inspections by engineers. "This has now been enhanced to include digital monitoring," they said. "This is part of a phased assessment process as we continue our work with Cambridgeshire County Council to determine the root cause and put an appropriate solution in place." About 270 hectares (670 acres) of habitat, including 40 native tree and shrub species, was created for wildlife along the new section of the A14, which realigned the dual carriageway south of Huntingdon. Locals say the tree screen will be vital to mitigate against noise from the road. However, National Highways said in 2022 about 20 to 30% of the trees had died, although all have been replanted. It has since planted another 165,000 trees and shrubs, 90% of which have survived. Vhari Russell, who founded the rewilding group Creating Nature's Corridors and with her family, lives close to the A14 in Brampton. They took matters into their own hands by planting their own trees. "What we're really lacking is the mulching and the watering and the nurturing and that wasn't done by National Highways," she said. Paul Salmon has been working on the latest National Highways infrastructure project in Cambridgeshire, from Caxton Gibbet to the Black Cat roundabout in Bedfordshire, for more than three years. The £1bn A428 project includes a new 10-mile (16km) dual carriageway, as well as bridges and junctions connecting to the existing road. "Everyone locally knows about the Black Cat junction, it's infamous for multiple reasons and has been a pinch point - including the last single carriageway on this east-west corridor between Milton Keynes and Felixstowe," he said. "And we will move that traffic off the local road. "Currently it's about 35,000 vehicles on the A428 a day, and by the time the new road opens, it'll be down to about 3,000 a day." The agency and its partner Skanska have spent time working out "the good, the bad and the indifferent" of the A14 project, the senior project manager added. Looking for long-term FTSE 100 stocks? Here's 1 to consider holding for 10 years!

Investors can find plenty of quality stocks in the FTSE 100 with serious long-term potential. Here's one I think is worth considering given the bright outlook for precious metal prices. Gold's price boom has been one of the major financial stories of recent times. Safe-haven interest has driven the yellow metal 28% higher in 2025, though its ascent isn't just a recent phenomenon. According to The Gold Bullion Company, a £1k investment in gold at the start of 2015 would have grown to £2,977.87 by April. This represents an average annual rate of return of 11.4%. To put that into context, the Footsie has delivered a far lower return of 6.3% over that time. I'm confident that gold can continue rising strongly over the coming decade as well, driven by a changing geopolitical landscape and likely depreciation in the US dollar. But rather than buying physical gold or a price-tracking fund, I think buying shares in precious metals producers could be a better option to consider. Fresnillo (LSE:FRES) is one such share I think is worth a close look right now. There are two main advantages of buying mining stocks like this: As well as letting investors track the gold price, mining stocks can also deliver passive income in the form of a regular dividend. Fresnillo itself has a long record of paying dividends, and carries yields above 3% for the next three years. Profits at commodity producers can grow more rapidly than the rate at which metal prices increase. This is because their costs are relatively fixed, meaning even a modest rise in gold values can substantially increase margins and earnings. The downside is that production problems (like strike action, machinery outages, or declining ore grades) are common threats that can impact miners' ability to capitalise on market movements. This is something that owners of physical metal or gold-tracking funds don't have to face. Yet, on balance, I think the potential rewards of owning Fresnillo in particular outweigh such risks. What's more, with eight operating mines across Mexico, it can absorb disruptions at one or two of its mines more effectively than smaller operators. There are other more specific reasons why I find Fresnillo shares attractive for the next decade. As a major silver producer as well, it's well placed to capitalise on long-term economic growth given the grey metal's extensive industrial applications. Around half the world's silver is used in products like consumer electronics, solar panels, automobiles, and medical devices. And like gold, safe-haven interest and further US dollar falls should support the metal for investment purposes. Fresnillo also has a healthy pipeline of exploration projects across South America to boost earnings in the coming decades. These include Guanajuato, Rodeo, and Orisyvo — the latter is tipped for maiden production in 2027, and is said to contain 9.6m ounces of gold and 13m ounces of silver. City analysts think Fresnillo's earnings will soar 194% in 2025. This leaves it trading on a forward price-to-earnings-to-growth (PEG) ratio of just 0.1. The market dislikes nothing more than uncertainty. So, on news that CEO Rob Perrins is to leave the role, it's no surprise that The Berkeley Group (LSE:BKG) is one of the FTSE 100's worst performing stocks in the past 24 hours. In a release on Friday (20 June), the housebuilder announced the long-standing chief executive will move over to become chair on 5 September. He will replace Michael Dobson, who has held the role for the last three years. The merry-go-round will also see Richard Stearns, Berkeley's chief financial officer since 2015, take over from Perrins in the autumn. Regarding Stearn's appointment, Berkeley was upbeat, commenting that the incoming CEO Has a strong understanding of the industry and Berkeley's business model. His appointment will uphold Berkeley's longstanding tradition and preference for promoting from within which maintains the culture and values of the organisation and provides continuity and stability for the Company, our people and shareholders Yet, it's not surprising investors' nerves are rattled by the departure. Perrins has been chief executive for 16 years. The change is especially sensitive as it comes just after the company launched its Berkeley 2035 10-year growth strategy in December. Berkeley's share price sank 8% on the news. Has the market overreacted, though? As with all chief executive appointments, only time will tell. What's encouraging, however, is that Berkeley's new chief executive is another company veteran. Stearns first joined the business in 2002, and he understands the company inside and out. Indeed, Stearns' journey echoes that of the man he is set to replace. Perrins held the role of CFO for eight years before becoming chief executive in 2009. On top of this, Stearns is taking over amid signs that the housing market is on course for a strong and sustained recovery. Berkeley's full-year financials, also released Friday, showed revenues rise 0.9% in the 12 months to April. Property deliveries (including joint ventures) increased to 4,329 from 3,927 the prior year, while average asking prices dropped to £593,000 from £664,000. Pre-tax profits dipped 5.1%, however. But things could be looking up for the FTSE builder as buyer affordability improves. Three-quarters of sales have already been secured for the new year, it said yesterday. And despite the poor outlook for the UK economy, reservations could keep climbing if (as expected) falling inflation prompts the Bank of England to keep slashing rates. Following Friday's price drop, Berkeley shares offer attractive value for money in my view. Its price-to-book (P/B) ratio of 1.1 times sits just above the conventional value watermark of one. But this is still well below the company's 10-year average of around 1.6. There are risks given the change of chief executive and the broader economic environment. But I feel it's still a strong FTSE stock to consider as population growth supercharges demand for housing, and its Berkeley 2035 strategy boosts newbuild output and exposure to the white-hot rentals sector.
