Russia, Ukraine say new POW exchange completed - War in Ukraine

Russia and Ukraine said Thursday that they had completed another exchange of captured soldiers, part of a deal reached earlier in June at peace talks in Istanbul.
During the talks, the first direct negotiations between the sides in three years, both countries agreed to free more than 1,000 prisoners of war from each side, all wounded, ill, or under 25 years old.
But neither side said how many soldiers had been freed in Thursday's exchange, the latest in several swaps since the June 2 talks.
"Our people are returning home from Russian captivity," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on social media.
The Ukrainian government agency overseeing the exchanges said it involved "seriously ill and wounded" soldiers.
Russia's defence ministry confirmed the exchange, posting pictures of soldiers draped in Russian flags cheering and waving.
Zelenskyy posted similar photos of freed Ukrainian soldiers, crying, smiling, and calling loved ones after being swapped.
In Istanbul, Moscow, and Kyiv also reached a deal was reached to repatriate more than 6,000 dead Ukrainian soldiers, with several stages of the handover carried out in recent weeks.
Ukraine has accused Russia of deliberately complicating the identification of the corpses.
Ukrainian Interior Minister Igor Klymenko on Thursday repeated the accusation and said on social media that Moscow had mixed "the bodies of Russian soldiers with those of Ukrainians."
Klymenko gave the identity of one of the Russian soldiers, saying his body had been handed over "dressed in a uniform of the Russian armed forces. He had a Russian passport, a military ID card, and a military certificate."
Moscow has rejected Ukrainian calls for an unconditional ceasefire at the talks, demanding instead that Kyiv cede more territory and renounce Western military support as a precondition for peace.

Al-Azhar grand imam condemns Israel's aggression against Iran in Persian statement - Foreign Affairs

Ahmed El-Tayyeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, the world's largest Sunni Islamic institution, has issued a forceful condemnation of Israel's ongoing actions against Iran, delivering his message not only in Arabic and English but, for the first time, in Persian on social media. 'I strongly condemn the ongoing aggression by the occupying entity against the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the systematic attacks and continued recklessness committed by this usurping aggressor and its backers,' he wrote on his social media accounts. El-Tayyeb warned that such actions risk "dragging the region to the brink of explosion and igniting a full-scale war, from which only arms dealers and profiteers of bloodshed would benefit." He also slammed the international community's response, saying its "silence in the face of this tyranny, and its failure to put an end to it, amounts to complicity in the crime." He added that such inaction "yields nothing but a growing threat to global security." "War cannot create peace," he concluded. His remarks come as the aerial confrontation between Israel and Iran enters its eighth consecutive day, with destruction and casualties mounting on both sides. Meanwhile, investigative reports—such as Seymour Hersh's recent piece detailing an alleged US-backed 'all-out bombing campaign' against Iran, including plans to strike the heavily fortified Fordow nuclear facility—suggest a broader escalation. Israeli-Iranian conflict.. When events defy reason

I was preparing to cover the ramifications of the Ukrainian assault on Russian military and civilian targets in the heart of Russia, and the consequent Russian retaliatory strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian urban and infrastructure targets, when the pivot of events shifted from Ukraine to Iran. A few days prior to Israel's attack on Iran, Iranian media had announced that Tehran was in possession of a vast trove of classified, strategic Israeli material that included files relating to Israel's strategic military and nuclear facilities, and its strategic defence arms. The world attempted to grasp how such a move would impact the US-supervised nuclear talks between Iran and Israel regarding Iran's enrichment of Uranium for peaceful purposes—meaning by under 3.75 per cent. President Trump called Iran to the negotiation table to reach a peaceful resolution to the conflict. But on 13 June the world woke up to Operation Rising Lions which had started during that night, and in which Israel struck strategic targets in Tehran, Natanz, Isfahan, Arak, Kermanshah and Tabriz. Presidential, military and administrative facilities were hit, as well as military airbases, bombers, and ballistic missile carriers. As I write this, everyone is closely monitoring the Israeli assault and Iran's retaliatory response, but we cannot narrow down the conflict to that. The coming days will open the doors to all possibilities; the Israeli-Iranian conflict can get out of hand, especially as the parties involved abandon negotiations and let the battlefield resolve the conflict. The question that begs an answer, however, is: If Iran was indeed in possession of strategic and sensitive classified Israeli documents, why did it hesitate to launch an attack against Israel that would have secured a military advantage for Iran, one that it could have exported to the negotiation table? Instead, what actually took place is that, as soon as news circulated about Iran's possession of Israeli classified material, Israel launched a surprise pre-emptive strike against Iran, targeting presidential, military and nuclear facilities causing damages so huge that it severely curtailed Iran's capacity to respond, and hence its control over the conflict. An equally important issue that cannot be discounted is the role of the US, especially under President Trump, in steering global conflicts on all fronts. Given the US President's hiccups and inconsistent declarations on global issues one and all ever since he took oath last January, and his alienation of both friends and foes, it has become increasingly evident that he can neither be trusted nor his declarations believed. When it comes to the Iranian-Israeli negotiations, President Trump had repeatedly stressed his commitment to resolving the conflict through negotiation, urging Iran to make every effort to reach an agreement that would limit its uranium enrichment to levels strictly for peaceful purposes. It might appear that, despite Trump's inconsistencies, Iran had put its faith in his declarations; why else would it have hesitated in launching a pre-emptive strike against Israel instead of being itself on the receiving end, thus risking a weaker position by remaining on the defensive? Now Iran has launched its missiles on Tel Aviv, understandably causing much damage, loss and injuries. But the repercussions of Israeli attacks and Iranian retaliatory strikes can go far beyond that. As the Israeli attack on Iran persists and so does Iranian retaliation, we fear that the scene opens for yet more international players to enter the conflict in support of any of the two parties. The calamity would be if Iran or Israel finds itself on the losing side; would they resort to a nuclear strike that would devastate the entire region and leave no victor? Egypt FM speaks with US, Iranian officials amid Israel-Iran escalation - Foreign Affairs

Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held separate phone calls on Thursday with US Middle East envoy Steven Witkoff and Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. This marked the second such discussions in four days as the military escalation between Israel and Iran entered its second week with no immediate solution in sight. According to a statement from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, the calls are in line with directives from President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi to intensify diplomatic efforts aimed at containing the military escalation between Israel and Iran. During the two calls, Minister Abdelatty reaffirmed the urgent need to de-escalate tensions, enforce a ceasefire, and make full use of available diplomatic channels to contain the rapidly deteriorating situation and avert a wider regional crisis. He stressed the importance of preventing the conflict from spreading and dragging the region into full-scale chaos with consequences no one would be immune to. Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's stance on pursuing every diplomatic and political avenue to reach a sustainable agreement on Iran's nuclear program. On Tuesday, Badr Abdelatty urged de-escalation and the pursuit of diplomatic solutions in separate phone calls with Araghchi and Witkoff. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
