Oman marks World Day to combat desertification, drought

Muscat: Represented by the Environment Authority, the Sultanate of Oman is joining the international community in celebration of the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. The event falls on 17 June every year.
This year the event is celebrated under the slogan 'Restore the Land, Unlock the Opportunities'.
As part of its participation in the event, Oman is contributing to global efforts to raise awareness of environmental challenges, encourage communities to adopt environment-friendly practices, promote local and international policies on protecting natural resources and enhance cooperation to combat desertification and land degradation.
The celebration highlights the role of ecosystem restoration in generating jobs, enhancing food and water security, supporting climate efforts and building sustainable economies.
The Environment Authority is implementing initiatives, projects and strategies to expand green cover, protect biodiversity and promote environmental sustainability. These include the "National Initiative to Plant 10 Million Trees". The initiative, launched on 8 January 2020, seeks to increase green spaces, combat desertification and restore degraded lands.
The Environment Authority is also implementing a project to plant one million mangrove seedlings, in cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The project aims to enhance marine diversity, absorb carbon dioxide and promote ecotourism.

Muscat: The Ministry of Social Development yesterday launched the 'Ayadi' or Hands platform for volunteer work, aimed at promoting a culture of volunteering and managing it with high professionalism and efficiency by providing a supportive digital environment. The launch ceremony witnessed the introduction of the first three initiatives on the platform. Sohar Port and Freezone announced the launch of the 'Our Sea, Our Responsibility' initiative, which aims to enhance community responsibility and environmental awareness to preserve coastal ecosystems and support marine resource sustainability. The initiative targets around 200 volunteers. The Oman Design Association introduced the 'Oman Design Week' initiative to engage Omani youth in organizing an annual event celebrating design and promoting Oman's cultural identity, with the participation of about 10 volunteers. Meanwhile, Salalah Volunteer Team's initiative, 'Hands of Good,' focuses on environmental and community efforts in the rugged mountainous areas of Dhofar. It aims to open mountain roads and trails, clean water channels, and natural springs, improving the lives of local residents and their living environment.

Oman marks global desertification day with push for greener future

Muscat – Oman, represented by the Environment Authority (EA), joined the global community in observing the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, marked annually on June 17. This year's theme, 'Restore the land. Unlock the opportunities', underscores the vital link between healthy ecosystems and sustainable development. Oman's participation reflects its continued commitment to international efforts aimed at raising awareness about the pressing challenges of desertification and drought. It also reinforces national priorities focused on encouraging sustainable environmental practices, supporting conservation policies, and enhancing global cooperation to protect natural resources. The observance highlights the role of ecosystem restoration in strengthening food and water security, generating employment, enabling climate adaptation, and building resilient, green economies. As part of its broader environmental strategy, the Environment Authority is leading several key initiatives and projects designed to promote sustainability, expand green spaces, and conserve biodiversity across the country. Among the most notable is the national initiative for planting 10mn trees, launched in January 2020, which aims to restore degraded lands and combat desertification through large-scale afforestation. Another major effort is the National Tree Cover Survey Project, which utilises remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), and artificial intelligence to establish a comprehensive, accurate database of tree coverage across the sultanate. Oman is also advancing mangrove reforestation projects, in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency. This ambitious initiative targets the planting of one million mangrove seedlings to enhance marine biodiversity, increase carbon absorption, and promote ecotourism. Mangrove forests currently span over 1,030 hectares along Oman's coastlines. Additionally, the authority regularly updates the National Plan to Combat Desertification every ten years, in cooperation with the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development. Oman also actively engages in international forums, including the upcoming Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, where it shares its national experiences and awareness campaigns.

2025 Summer Programme for Gifted Students launched in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate

Nizwa: The activities of the 2025 Summer Programme for Gifted Students in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate began on Tuesday. The programme, organised by the Directorate General of Education in the governorate, targets more than 80 male and female students from various wilayats of the governorate as part of the national "Tharwa" programme for nurturing gifted students. Ahmed Marhoon Al Busaidi, a senior gifted student care specialist, stated that the program offers a rich experience combining creativity and knowledge. It aims to refine students' personalities and enhance their future capabilities, with programmes tailored to their individual interests and talents, opening up diverse horizons in literature, science, technology, and the arts. This programme serves as a comprehensive training pathway to develop the skills of gifted students and refine their abilities in four key areas: literature, science, technology, and the arts. It includes training programs and hands-on workshops conducted across several leading educational institutions and centers.
