David Hall on weather watch as Invincible Sage steps into calmer waters

A Group One winner on a yielding surface, continued rain will play right into the five-year-old speedster's hands
David Hall's certainly not getting ahead of himself but Hong Kong's midweek wet weather is enough to get the trainer a little excited ahead of Invincible Sage's run in Sunday's Class One Kowloon City Handicap (1,200m).
With plenty of rain around Hong Kong on Thursday and the prospect of more to come, Invincible Sage could get the yielding conditions that allowed him to post his career-best performance when winning last April's Group One Chairman's Sprint Prize (1,200m).
'We've been here long enough to know that with Sha Tin you need to see it on the day before you get too excited, but if I'm looking at the forecast, I'm excited,' said Hall.
After failing to even run a place this term as Ka Ying Rising has taken the Hong Kong sprinting ranks by storm, Invincible Sage steps outside Group company for the first time in a year.

The 110-rated galloper will carry 135 pounds but has gate one under Hugh Bowman in an eight-horse race featuring the likes of Lucky With You, Magic Control, Mugen and Taj Dragon.
'It's hard. He's a Group One winner but he did it in 1:09.33 and he's chasing horses now who are running 1:07.8,' said Hall.
'Unless he gets a wet track, you can't really be too tough on his performances.
'We thought we'd have a run at the handicap. With a little horse that's probably going to be difficult, but I think it's the right option for him.'
Invincible Sage was one of a handful of Hong Kong entries for the Group One Al Quoz Sprint (1,200m) down the Meydan straight on April 5's Dubai World Cup night, but the five-year-old's seventh in last month's Group One Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup (1,400m) put paid to those plans.
'We put him in there and I thought if he was genuinely a chance to be very competitive we'd go, but off his last run I think without the wet ground he's probably just short of that class and I still want to have a horse left, so we made the decision to stay,' confirmed Hall.
Also among Hall's eight runners this weekend is Encountered, who will be ridden by the in-form James Orman in the Class Two Carpenter Handicap (1,800m).
Another galloper who recently took a step back from Group grade, Encountered could only manage eighth in a Class One over the extended Happy Valley mile last start but the return to nine furlongs at Sha Tin looks likely to suit the six-year-old.
'I've taken the blinkers off him and put the tongue tie back on. He was a bit average at Happy Valley the other day but he's put in a couple of really good runs, so hopefully he brings his best form,' Hall said.
'Once again, it's a handicap and he's up the top, so he's got to carry the weight, but he's a big horse and he's capable of doing it if he can find his form on the day.'

Satono Reve brings Ka Ying Rising form to Royal Ascot as meeting wraps up on Saturday

Photo: Kenneth Chan The Japanese sprinter will clash with a swag of other international stars in the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (1,200m) Satono Reve could give a hefty boost to the formlines of Ka Ying Rising when he lines up in the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (1,200m) at Royal Ascot on Saturday. Trained by Noriyuki Hori in Japan, the Lord Kanaloa galloper has twice chased home Ka Ying Rising this season, first when third in December's Group One Hong Kong Sprint (1,200m) before his second-placed finish in the Group One Chairman's Sprint Prize (1,200m) in April. In-between those runs was a fantastic win in the Group One Takamatsunomiya Kinen (1,200m) at Chukyo in March and he is the joint-highest rated horse in the field. He shares that honour with Lazzat, a French raider who chased home Voyage Bubble in the Group One Hong Kong Mile (1,600m) at Sha Tin in December and has since dropped in distance to devastating effect. HE DOES IT AGAIN! 🚀 Ka Ying Rising makes it 12 straight wins, four Group 1s and a HK$5 million Speed Series bonus with victory in the 2025 Chairman's Sprint Prize... @zpurton #FWDChampionsDay | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) April 27, 2025 The four-year-old decimated his rivals by five lengths in the Listed Prix Servanne (1,200m) at Chantilly in May and is unbeaten in two starts at the 1,200m distance. Storm Boy – placed at Group One level in Australia last year – was the talk of the town before his stable debut for Aidan O'Brien in the Group Two Greenlands Stakes (1,200m) at the Curragh, but he trailed in last as the short-priced favourite. His trainer has subsequently suggested he 'had never been galloped or worked' before that start, so an improved effort can be expected on that evidence. The chief British hope is the Kevin Ryan-trained Inisherin, who won the Group One Commonwealth Cup (1,200m) at last year's Royal meeting. Inisherin is the real deal and lands the Commonwealth Cup at Royal @Ascot! — At The Races (@AtTheRaces) June 21, 2024 He has struggled with injuries since that run but reappeared this year with a cosy win in the Group Two Clipper Stakes (1,200m) at York and is still lightly raced for his age. The horse he beat at York, Flora Of Bermuda, has subsequently been bought by Wathnan Racing and the Dark Angel filly has a consistent record that makes her a place danger. The supporting card is spearheaded by the Group Two Hardwicke Stakes (2,400m), where last year's Group One Champions & Chater Cup (2,400m) winner Rebel's Romance bids for a maiden Royal Ascot success to add to his remarkable CV. Godolphin's globetrotter has struck at Group One level twice since his Sha Tin romp last May, most recently in the Group One Breeders' Cup Turf (2,400m) at Del Mar in November. Rebel's Romance is just too good! The boys in blue land the @StanChart Champions & Chater Cup at Sha Tin... 🏆 #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) May 26, 2024 He made his British return with a comfortable win in the Group Two Yorkshire Cup (2,600m) at York last month and is 5lb clear of his rivals on British ratings. Charlie Appleby's star will clash with Al Riffa, who wears blinkers for the first time. The Wootton Bassett galloper landed the Group One Grosser Preis von Berlin (2,400m) at Hoppengarten last August and has been running well in defeat internationally this year, including when fourth in the Group One Prix Ganay (2,100m) at Longchamp in April. He is set to relish the extra 300m at a stiff Ascot track and looks a big danger to the likely short-priced favourite. Other dangers include Amo Racing's new purchase Ghostwriter, who is yet to strike at Group One level but posted a career-best effort when chasing home Soul Rush and Romantic Warrior in the Group One Dubai Turf (1,800m) at Meydan in April.

Docklands delivers for Harry Eustace as superstar Field Of Gold dazzles on day one of Royal Ascot

Docklands (centre) pips Rosallion (right) in Tuesday's Group One Queen Anne Stakes (1,600m) at Royal Ascot. Photo: Reuters Docklands handed Harry Eustace his first Group One success and star three-year-old Field Of Gold lit up the turf on a bumper day one of Royal Ascot on Tuesday. Eustace celebrated the biggest moment of his career with his brother David, who has made a strong impression in his first season as a handler in Hong Kong, after Docklands prevailed in a thrilling finish to the Group One Queen Anne Stakes (1,600m). Starting a $14 chance, Docklands settled in the back half of the field. Despite Australian rider Mark Zahra dropping his whip at the 200m, the galloper ran on strongly to hold on by a nose from $2.8 favourite Rosallion. Cairo ($60) was almost two lengths behind in third. 'I have lost my voice. That was pretty sweet,' Eustace said after Docklands went one better than in last year's Queen Anne. 'It was tough watching and the photo was tough. I wasn't happy with the pace early on. Docklands did his usual thing, just stepped slow and I was cursing him to be honest, but he is just an absolute star.' FIELD OF GOLD wins the St James's Palace Stakes with ease, with @ctkjockey on board. Congratulations to John & Thady Gosden and @JuddmonteFarms. — Ascot Racecourse (@Ascot) June 17, 2025 Jockey Colin Keane hailed Field Of Gold 'the best horse I've ever sat on' after John and Thady Gosden's outstanding colt turned the Group One St James's Palace Stakes (1,600m) into a one-act affair. The raging $1.6 favourite powered home from second last to bolt in by three and a half lengths, boosting his record to five wins from eight starts. 'Good horses make it look easy,' Keane, Juddmonte's new number one rider, said. 'I am fortunate enough to be riding him and, at this moment, he is the best horse I've ever sat on. I've been lucky enough to join this team. It is a very new relationship and to get a horse like him so early on is amazing. I've had nothing compared to this in recent years, so it's a very special day.' American Affair won Tuesday's other Group One, the King Charles III Stakes (1,000m), for trainer Jim Goldie and jockey Paul Mulrennan.

O'Brien wins record-extending 11th Derby with Lambourn

O'Brien wins record-extending 11th Derby with Lambourn Jockey Wayne Lordan rides Lambourn to victory at the Epsom Derby. Photo: AFP Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien won a record-extending 11th Epsom Derby as Lambourn put up an astonishing performance to lead from start to finish on Saturday. For O'Brien it completed an extraordinary two days as Minnie Hauk won the Oaks on Friday and his Jan Brueghel won the other Group One race the Coronation Cup. It is not the first time the 55-year-old has achieved the Oaks/Derby double, last doing it in 2020 with Love (Oaks) and Serpentine. Jockey Wayne Lordan was never challenged in winning his first Derby on his ninth ride in the race considered to be the 'blue riband' of flat racing. None of the other fancied horses landed a blow and it was two outsiders that were closest at the finish – Lazy Griff (50/1) was second with 28/1 chance Tennessee Stud, trained by O'Brien's son Joseph, third. "I knew I'd gone a good gallop, his ears were pricked and I knew he had plenty left," said Lordan. "He's a horse that we've always felt stays well so I just thought anybody that gets to me will have to stay well and it'd be tough for them." Lordan's career was in doubt a couple of years ago after a dreadful fall in the Irish Derby in which he suffered a fractured leg and elbow. Saturday, though, represented his biggest ever victory. "It's one of the greatest races," said the 43-year-old. "For any jockey that wants to start out, all they ever want to do is win the Derby and I work for Aidan, Ballydoyle, Coolmore so I'm in a lucky position that I get to ask for a horse like this."
