59 cases of illegal durian farming in Pahang's forest reserves since 2019
Volunteers from 23 NGOs planted high-value timber trees in the Batu Talam Forest Reserve in Raub, after 15,000 illegally planted Musang King durian trees were discovered in the area.
PETALING JAYA : The Pahang forestry department has carried out a total of 114 enforcement operations since 2019, involving 59 cases of encroachment on forest reserves for illegal durian farming.
The department's director Zainuddin Jamaluddin said the 101 items seized from these forest areas included pickup trucks, motorcycles, and herbicide spraying equipment.
He said the encroachments were detected through patrols, drones, and satellite surveillance, Berita Harian reported.
'Durian trees would be felled using chainsaws, regardless of the tree's size or the forest's location,' he said.
'This enforcement action is not cruel, even though many disagree with it. Before any operation is carried out, negotiations are held with the illegal farmers to give them a chance.'
Offenders can be prosecuted under Sections 32, 47, and 50 of the National Forestry Act 1984, which carry penalties including imprisonment and fines.
Zainuddin said that once the durian trees are cut down, the department's western zone silviculture office replants the area with high-value timber species such as meranti, merbau, perah, and keruing.
According to him, the silviculture office and district enforcement agencies face various challenges, including the remote location of encroachment sites, fenced private land, and narrow, hazardous paths.
'Nonetheless, we continue our enforcement efforts to ensure that forest reserve encroachments do not persist.
'We will not compromise when it comes to forest reserve encroachments for illegal durian farming.'
In 2021, the department cut down about 15,000 Musang King durian trees illegally planted across 101.17 hectares in the Batu Talam Forest Reserve in Raub.
Around 20,000 trees, including merawan, meranti, balau, and keruing, were subsequently planted in the area.
Last month, the department carried out enforcement operations against illegal durian farms in Sungai Ruan and Sungai Klau, Raub.

Retired teacher, senior citizen lose RM352,000 to scams
JOHOR BARU: Police are investigating two commercial crime crises that cost a retired teacher and a senior citizen more than RM352,000 in total losses. Johor Baru South police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said the first case involved a 60-year-old retired teacher who lost RM243,975 in an investment scam advertised on social media. Lured by a promised 560 per cent return within three months, the victim joined a WhatsApp group and was instructed to download an application purportedly linked to the investment. Between April 28 and June 19, the victim made seven online and over-the-counter bank transfers totalling RM255,100 into two bank accounts. She received RM11,125 in returns, resulting in a net loss of nearly a quarter million ringgit. "Checks revealed 17 prior fraud reports linked to the bank accounts used," Raub said in a statement today. In the second case, a senior citizen lost RM108,959 after he received a phone call from a man claiming to be a bank officer. The caller claimed the victim's credit card had been misused on an e-commerce online platform and convinced him to perform several "verification" transactions, which included transferring RM8,989 from his wife's credit card to the suspect's TNG eWallet. He was also instructed to transfer RM99,970 via DuitNow from his bank account. Raub said the suspect became unreachable once the transactions were completed. Checks showed the phone number had been linked to two similar fraud cases. He urged the public to be wary of investment offers on digital platforms and not to trust promises of unrealistic returns. He also advised verifying suspicious calls through official bank channels and reporting scams immediately to the National Scam Response Centre at 997, which can help block suspect accounts and stop fund transfers.

Police probe bullying case at Klang school after toilet assault video goes viral
SHAH ALAM, June 21 — Police have launched an investigation into a bullying incident involving a female student in the toilet of a secondary school in Klang. Klang Utara police chief ACP S Vijaya Rao said the incident came to light after a video of the assault went viral on social media. A police report was lodged at 12.53pm today. 'Police take all forms of bullying seriously, especially when it involves students. Firm action will be taken to ensure public safety and maintain order. The motive behind the altercation is still under investigation,' he said in a statement. Vijaya also urged the public not to spread speculation or unfounded claims that could cause public anxiety. 'Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact Inspector Mohamad Izroy Kamarulzaman at 014-818 3519 to assist in the investigation,' he added. Klang fatal shooting: ‘I thought it was a crow-shooting operation,' says witness after man found dead in pickup
KLANG, June 21 — The daily routine of the community in Taman Meru Utama came to a standstill when the peace was shattered by the sound of gunfire in front of a motorcycle shop that claimed the life of a local man yesterday (June 20). At the time of the incident, a retail shop owner, a woman who wished to remain anonymous, revealed that the shooting happened so quickly that it was difficult for the public to ascertain where several gunshots heard at about 3.20 pm, were coming from. 'I was tying flowers to make a garland when I heard an explosion like firecrackers, then I looked towards a motorcycle shop which was just 20 metres away and saw several individuals, including the motorcycle shop workers, running towards my store. 'I thought it was a crow-shooting operation but that hasn't been staged here for a long time since many trees have been cut down (where crows perch), ... then I realised someone has been shot and killed in a vehicle right in front of the motorcycle shop,' she told Bernama here today. The woman in her 50s also said that this was the first incident of its kind to occur near Taman Meru Utama in the five years she and her family have been running a grocery and food business. Yesterday, North Klang police chief ACP S Vijaya Rao confirmed that a 46-year-old local man had died from gunshot wounds in a four-wheel drive Ford Ranger pickup truck, with a post-mortem scheduled for 9 am today. When contacted today, Vijaya Rao said police were investigating possible secret society elements in the case. He said several individuals had so far been called in to have their statements recorded.
