'There Are Speeds?!:' Man Shows 'Life Hack' for Pumping Gas Without Foam. Then He Changes Settings

Motor 113-06-2025

In episode #3,791 of Things You Never Knew, gas pumps have different speed settings, and you might be using the wrong one.
One guy on TikTok swears that picking the right one will save you money in the long run.
Gas Pumping PSA
In a viral video with nearly a million views, content creator @bori2funny shared one thing he always does at the gas station to get the most bang for his buck.
'I'm finna teach all y'all a life hack right now,' @bori2funny said.
In the video, he explained that when you put your nozzle to pump gas automatically (with those little metal notches that keep the pump in place), you shouldn't put it on the highest or fastest setting.
He claimed that when it goes too fast, the gas can get foamy. (This is especially true with diesel,
Redditors say
.)
'You put it on the slowest one, you get nothing but liquid,' @bori2funny said.
'Telling you, try it out. I'm putting y'all on right now,' he concludes.
What we're stuck on is the speed claim.
Does the Gas Pump Really Have Different Speeds?
Yes, it does. Who woulda guessed it?
While most people think the little notches on the gas pump handles are just for letting the gas pour automatically, they're more intentionally designed than you ever thought.
Though it's not a universal design, many nozzles at the gas station have three different notches indicating the speed—slow, medium, and fast—at which the gas will flow out.
Do the Speeds Matter?
Wavy
confirmed that it does.
It explained that pumping at higher speeds releases more vapors, so you might pay for more gas than you actually get, so it's better to pump slower.
Are There Really Tricks to Save On Gas?
Absolutely. When it comes to saving money on gas, every detail counts. Here are a few tricks at the pump and maintenance tips to help every drop of fuel and every dollar stretch further at the gas station, according to
Wavy
.
Time and temperature matter -
Gas expands and contracts about 1% for every 15 degrees of temperature change. So it's better to fill up when the gas is cool and contracted versus when it's warm and expanded. This means filling up earlier in the day when tanks are cooler and avoiding getting gas on the day it's delivered from the refinery, since it's hotter than when it's had time to sit in a tank for a while.
Topping off doesn't work -
You might inadvertently be spending more to get less gas. When you try to keep pouring after the nozzle has stopped, it doesn't necessarily mean you're getting more gas. Many nozzles are fitted to take up extra gas and cycle it back to the pump, so you may end up paying more without actually getting more gas. 'Once the pump stops, put the nozzle back on the tank to ensure you only pay for what you receive,' Cardenas states.
Tighten your gas cap -
When gas expands, like when it's hot, a portion turns into gas and vapors that escape into the air. A loose-fitting cap will allow more of those vapors to escape.
Keep up your maintenance - Fill up your tires since low tire pressure decreases your gas mileage. Make sure your engine is performing properly and change your air filter, since a dirty filter causes more fuel burn (though newer cars adjust for this).
Commenters react
'I didn't know there were speeds….,' the top comment with more than 50,000 likes read.
'Boy I thought you was finna tell us how to get gas for free,' a second person said, disappointed.
'Omg i feel gaslighted,' another joked.
'You're not getting less gas at a higher setting — just getting it faster. If you want to be ultra-precise or reduce splashback, using a slower setting can help, but the difference is minimal,' a commenter argued.

Comedian Recalls 'Creepy and Weird' Encounters With Ellen DeGeneres originally appeared on Parade. Margaret Cho is opening up about her "creepy and weird" experiences with Ellen DeGeneres, calling the TV show host 'not nice.' In an interview on The Kelly Mantle Showon Wednesday, June 18, Cho shared that DeGeneres had been rude to her throughout her career, especially when they crossed paths in the '80s and later when Cho appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in the 2000s. 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬'I opened for her in the 1980s, when she was a headliner in comedy clubs, [and] later, when I would do her talk show in the 2000s, she acted like we just met. And I'm like, 'B****, what?' Like, that's weird. We go way back… It's so creepy and weird,' Cho shared in the interview. Cho, 56, also recounted a moment when David Bowie praised her outfit at his concert, only for DeGeneres, 67, to cut his praise from the show. 'The producer, who's a really good friend of mine, had to call me and tell me, 'I can't believe she did this, but she cut it out of the show. But you need to know that he was going on and on about your outfit. He loves you. God said your name,'' Cho stated. While she acknowledged maybe she cut it in the interest of time, but still called it 'so rude.' A clip from the interview was shared on Instagram, which racked up quite a few comments from fans of Cho. 'David Bowie loved your outfit, so you are blessed forever,' one noted. A second shared, 'Pretty sure I knew about Margret Cho before I knew about Ellen. ❤️ Just sayin.' 'It speaks volumes that David Bowie loved you but Ellen didn't,' another commented. Cho's not alone with her complaints about the comedian. Celebs like Brad Garrett, Lea Thompson and Kathy Griffin have also expressed receiving mistreatment from DeGeneres. The former TV show host has since addressed the backlash, acknowledging the contrast between her "Be kind" mantra and her public persona in her 2024 stand-up special, Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval. 'Here's the problem: I'm a comedian who got a talk show and I ended the show every day by saying, 'Be kind to one another.' Had I ended my show by saying, 'Go f*** yourselves,' people would've been pleasantly surprised to find out I'm kind.' Paige Spiranac Confirms Theory About Her Golf Game: 'Science is Right' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Golf influencer Paige Spiranac is once again proving that her signature golf style isn't just for show. Advertisement On Sunday, the social media star and former pro golfer posted a lighthearted message on X, reflecting on a not-so-great day on the course and how her outfit may have played a role. 'If you've been following me for awhile you know I have this working theory that I play better when I wear less clothes,' Spiranac wrote. 'Can confirm that science is right once again. I played like 💩 today.' The post included a photo of Spiranac in a sporty but more covered look than her usual on-course outfits. She wore a light gray, short-sleeved button-up shirt with thin stripes, paired with black shorts and white sneakers with yellow accents. Her outfit was completed with a blue visor, dark sunglasses and her blonde hair tied back, perfect for the summer heat but not, in her view, for her swing. Halsey Alerts & Saves Crew From Getting Burned During Concert

Halsey recently could have faced a big stage mishap, but the 'Walls Could Talk' singer saved the day with their quick actions. The artist is currently on the 'For My Last Trick' tour. The incident took place on June 14 during their Pittsburgh concert as part of the tour. While performing their song 'Without Me' on stage, the singer noticed a crew member could be in danger of burning by coming close to the pyrotechnics display. The artist didn't waste any time and stepped in to save the crew person. A new TikTok video from Halsey's recent concert in Pittsburgh has gone viral on the internet. The concert was part of the ongoing 'For My Last Trick' tour. The video captured the singer saving a videographer from a potentially serious injury on stage. During their performance on the song 'Without Me', a crew member caught the artist's attention. The videographer was capturing moments of Halsey's performance. However, what the person didn't realize was that they were standing close to the pyrotechnics display, which is a very common part of concerts. The singer was singing the line 'I had to go and find out from them' when they noticed the videographer's position on the stage. Halsey immediately made waving gestures with their hands and also asked the crew person to 'get out of the way!' However, the videographer failed to understand what Halsey was trying to convey. As soon as the singer realized what was happening, they rushed towards the crew person to save them. The artist could be heard shouting, 'No, there-there's pyro coming! Move.' After that, the videographer moved away from the spot right before the pyrotechnics display began on the stage. Thus, the singer won fans' hearts by saving the crew member from a possible accident.
