Daredevils tumble for glory at Gloucester's annual cheese-rolling race
A German YouTuber and a London thrill-seeker took top honours (and likely a few bruises) at one of Britain's most chaotic and bizarre sporting traditions: the annual Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling Race.
For the second year in a row, Munich's Tom Kopke threw caution to the wind, hurtling down the 200-yard, nearly vertical hill after a runaway wheel of Double Gloucester in front of thousands of spectators.
'All the people at the top said they were going to steal my title but this is mine,' a shirtless Kopke declared as he clutched his prize - the 7-pound (3-kilogram) circle of cheese. 'I risked my life for this. It's my cheese. Back to back.'
In the women's race, Ava Sender Logan from London came out victorious. 'I will probably feel it tomorrow,' she said. 'It felt quite long coming down and then I hit my head. I'm down, that's what matters. I'm fine.'
The origins of this wild event remain unclear, though it's believed to date back much further than its first recorded mention in 1826.

The American Music Awards (AMAs) are back after a two-year hiatus and took place last night at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas in Las Vegas.
Kendrick Lamar led the nominations with 10 nods, with Post Malone following behind with eight noms, and Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan and Shaboozey following behind with seven each.
At the end of the evening, Billie Eilish emerged triumphant as the biggest winner of the night, winning all seven of her nominations, including Artist of the Year, Song of the Year and Album of the Year.
Eilish was not present at the awards and instead sent in video speeches thanking her fans.

Elsewhere, Gracie Abrams won New Artist of the Year, while Eminem beat Kendrick Lamar for Favourite Male Hip-Hop Artist and Favourite Hip-Hop Album. Lamar did win Favourite Hip-Hop Song for his record-smashing and Grammy Award-winning Drake diss track 'Not Like Us'.
SZA won Favourite R&B Song and Favourite Female R&B Artist, while Beyoncé won Favourite Country Album and Favourite Female Country Artist.
Janet Jackson received the Icon Award, and both Road Stewart and Zac Brown were awarded special prizes, with the Lifetime Achievement Award and Veterans Voice Award respectively.

Wolfgang Tillmans' photography in action
"They have arrived," wrote visual artist Wolfgang Tillmans in French on his Instagram account on May 16, captioning a photograph showing trucks in front of the Centre Pompidou in Paris. It was a curious ballet: Since mid-March, the National Museum of Modern Art has been emptying its permanent collection, dispersing it among various institutions and storage sites during a major renovation of the building that is set to last five years. 'Second time I've died': Nobel laureate Jelinek denies death reports
"Again? This is the second time I've died. It already happened last year. But I'm alive," the 78-year-old writer told AFP. Jelinek, one of the most widely read and studied authors in the German language, won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2004. The false announcement came from an account on social media platform X posing as the Austrian subsidiary of Germany's Rowohlt publishing house. The information was picked up and published by Austrian and German media outlets. Rowohlt rebuffed the announcement on its official social media and the fake X account later posted a message confirming it had been a hoax. "This account is (a) hoax created by Italian journalist Tommasso Debenedetti," the account posted. The name has been used for years in connection with pranks spreading false information online. Politicians have also been fooled by pranks apparently carried out by the same person. An Austrian lawmaker requested a minute's silence during a parliamentary meeting in 2022 as a tribute to former Chancellor Franz Vranitzky, who had been declared dead by Debenedetti. Jelinek is best known for her 1983 novel "The Piano Teacher", about a woman whose quest for self-mutilation and sado-masochim destroys her romance with a young student. The book was made into an award-winning film in 2001 and won Jelinek fame outside the German-speaking world.

Two of K-pop's BTS megastars released from military service
The seven members of BTS, South Korea's most lucrative musical act, have been on a self-described "hiatus" since 2022 while they separately undertake the mandatory service, required of all South Korean men under 30 due to tensions with the nuclear-armed North. Hundreds of fans gathered near two army bases just outside of the capital Seoul where band leader RM -- recently named "Favorite K-pop Artist" at the American Music Awards -- and singer V were released Tuesday. They are two of four BTS members who will be released this week. Two more, who enlisted first, were discharged last year, and the final member SUGA -- who has been working as a social service agent for alternative non-active-duty service -- will be released later this month. HYBE, the band's agency, urged fans not to go to the discharge location, citing safety concerns. "With the safety of both artists and fans in mind, we strongly urge fans not to go to the location in person," the agency wrote on Weverse, its superfan platform. Despite the warning, dozens of fans gathered outside V's military base, eagerly awaiting the return of their star. "Honestly, I came here with such high expectations," Yang Ho-hee, 28, told AFP outside the base. Fans had hung colourful banners to welcome the 29-year-old back to civilian life. "Taehyung, let's never be apart again," one said, referring to V's real name, Kim Tae-hyung. "I'll follow only you, Taehyung. We are each other's strength," said another. Reunion tour? Near the bases, on a football field where the newly released BTS members are set to speak later, hundreds of fans from around the world gathered hoping to catch a glimpse of their idols. "Actually, it's mixed emotions. I feel like I'm crying already," said Arlene Mendoza, a fan from the Philippines. "I've been traveling to Korea so many times, but this is actually the first time I'll see V." Mendoza told AFP she plans to attend fellow member J-hope's concert on Friday, plus join other BTS FESTA events. All the band members signed new contracts with HYBE in 2023, and once SUGA is released June 21, analysts expect reunion activities. "In the case of HYBE share prices, the current market consensus is seen as not fully reflecting BTS's impact," Lim Soo-jin, an analyst at Daishin Securities, told AFP. Despite an ongoing police investigation into the company chairman for suspected insider trading and a recent raid by authorities, analysts say HYBE's shares are expected to remain stable. "We see there's a high possibility of an upward revision in earnings forecasts, which could in turn drive the stock price higher," Lim said. HYBE's shares have seen a sharp increase, rising by 10 percent over the past week through June 9. GDP impact Prior to beginning their mandatory military service, the mega boy band generated more than 5.5 trillion won ($4 billion) in yearly economic impact, according to the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute. That accounts for roughly 0.2 percent of South Korea's total GDP, according to official data. HYBE has hinted at a BTS comeback this year, but has also said the members "need time for reflection and preparation". "Normally, the process goes from song production to album release, then a tour," Lee Jae-sang, CEO of HYBE, told a shareholder meeting in March. "But since BTS have already become global top-tier artists, we are continuing discussions about their vision and what's next," Lee added. Outside HYBE headquarters in Seoul, banners from fans read: "Thank you for making even the waiting feel joyful."
