Chouhan unveils first genome-edited rice varieties, yield to rise up to 30%

Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Sunday unveiled the first genome-edited rice varieties '?DRR Dhan 100 (Kamala) and Pusa DST Rice 1'? developed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) to address challenges of climate change and boost rice yields by up to 30 per cent.
"It is an important day for us... Soon, these two new rice varieties will be made available to farmers," Chouhan said, adding that the new varieties will enhance rice yields by 20-30 per cent, conserve water, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from rice cultivation.
These varieties are recommended for major rice-growing states, including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and West Bengal.
Scientists developed these varieties by enhancing two widely grown rice types --? Samba Mahsuri (BPT5204) and MTU1010 (Cottondora Sannalu) --? with improved stress tolerance, yield, and climate adaptability, while retaining their original strengths.
Both varieties exhibit superior drought tolerance and high nitrogen-use efficiency.
The minister said DRR Dhan 100 (Kamala) matures about 20 days earlier (130 days) than its parent, enabling earlier harvests and potential for crop rotation or multiple cropping cycles. The shorter duration of DRR Dhan 100 (Kamala) allows farmers to save three irrigations.
Cultivation of both varieties across 5 million hectares could produce an additional 4.5 million tonnes of paddy, he said.
"India cannot achieve the goal of a developed nation without developing the farm sector exploring advanced technologies," the minister said, calling on ICAR scientists to develop better varieties in pulses and oilseeds to reduce the country's import dependence.
These genome-edited rice varieties represent a major advancement in India's agricultural biotechnology, offering practical solutions to the dual challenges of climate change and food security. They also demonstrate the potential of genome editing for future crop improvement programs.
The agriculture minister emphasised that research scientists are key to the country's food security and ensuring India becomes "a food basket of the world". "Currently, India exports Rs 48,000 crore worth of basmati rice.
However, we need to ensure nutrition-rich food for the future. This responsibility lies on the shoulders of our farm scientists," he said.
Chouhan suggested a new formula: "Minus-five Plus Ten" --? reducing rice acreage by 5 million hectares while enhancing yield by 10 million tonnes. "The rice area should be shifted to pulses and oilseeds to increase production and reduce imports," he said.
Agriculture Secretary Devesh Choudhary explained that the new rice varieties were developed using advanced technologies, each offering distinct advantages for yield, resilience, and quality.
"The genome-edited rice varieties released today have 20 per cent higher yields. They will be made available to the farming community through both public and private institutions and brought under the seed chain very soon," he said.
ICAR Director General Mangi Lal Jat called it "a historical day in India's agriculture" and emphasised developing better seed varieties to address climate change challenges.
"We need to adopt demand-driven research, not supply-driven. The research should be done taking farmers' feedback and needs," he said, stressing the need to retain youth in farming under the motto of "One nation, One national research system".
Genome-edited rice varieties have previously been developed in countries like China and Japan, but many have remained in research settings with only a few reaching formal release or commercialisation.

The move came after the Karnataka government submitted a proposal to the Centre, highlighting the steady decline in prices of both tomatoes and mangoes – especially the Totapuri variety. Union Agriculture Secretary Devesh Chaturvedi also participated in the virtual meeting. During the discussion, Minister Chaluvaraya Swamy noted that while tomato prices were also a concern earlier, they have since stabilised and do not require immediate intervention. 'The decision to provide this relief will greatly help mango farmers who have been struggling due to low market prices,' Chaluvaraya Swamy said, thanking the Union minister for his support. Officials said details regarding the implementation mechanism, including how the differential price will be calculated and disbursed, will be announced soon. On Thursday, the state cabinet resolved to urge the Centre for greater support, flagging crises in major mango-producing regions such as Kolar and Chikkaballapura. The Karnataka government has been facing the heat of mango growers of Chikkaballapura and Kolar districts, who have been demanding a Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 per quintal for their produce. The prices crashed due to the ban on the 'Totapuri' variety of Karnataka mangoes in Andhra Pradesh for having more water content. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had written twice – once to Union Agriculture Minister Chouhan requesting implementation of the Price Deficiency Payment Scheme (PDPS) and Market Intervention Scheme (MIS), and once to Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu urging the rollback of AP's ban on Karnataka Totapuri mangoes entering Chittoor. The letter highlighted plummeting prices (from Rs 12,000 to Rs 3,000 per quintal) versus cultivation costs (Rs 5,466 per quintal). Andhra Pradesh's import ban on Totapuri mangoes had stranded Karnataka produce at the border, cutting access to processing units and amplifying the price slump. Farmers were demanding an MSP and immediate state intervention as lorry-loads remained blocked. On Tuesday, Janata Dal (Secular) MLAs Samruddhi Manjunath and Venkatashiva Reddy staged a dharna at the Gandhi statue on the premises of Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru to protest against the government for 'ignoring' the demands of mango farmers. In Srinivasapura under Kolar district, farmers also dumped tonnes of mangoes on roads to protest against the slump in prices. A mango trader in Srinivasapura died reportedly from a heart attack after suffering heavy losses. He had invested Rs 30 lakh in produce, which dropped in value due to the ban and market slump.

Wealth from waste: how crop residue can provide nutritious cattle fodder, make farming eco-friendly

Scientists at CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) here seems to have found a solution to the country's mounting problem of dealing with agriculture residue such as paddy straw and rice and wheat husk. Over the past few years, scientists at the premier institute have been working on converting rice straw and other crop residue into nutrient rich fodder for the livestock and also other value-added products such as Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) and Fermented Organic Manure (FOM). Usually farmers resort to burning the crop residues, leading to environment pollution. Though it is already being used as cattle fodder, it is not as nutritious as other foods. Scientists have now shown that crop residue like rice straw when treated with a relatively simple chemical process could effectively help bridge the gap in the country's fodder needs, besides protecting the environment. By separating 'lignin', a complex polymer found in plant cell walls, and adding a few essential ingredients, rice straw could be turned into a cattle fodder with improved palatability and digestibility. The process is called 'delignification', said principal scientist Polumati Anand. After testing the process in an in house pilot plant on the institute campus in Tarnaka, the fortified fodder was evaluated in field trials. Buffalo calves and sheep were fed the fodder and their food intake, digestion and growth examined. These field trials of the fortified fodder held at the ICAR-National Research Centre on Meat, Chengicharla, (Hyderabad) showed 'remarkable' improvements in digestibility of buffaloes as palatability increased from 20% to 60%, he explained. Weight gain in the sheep was approximately 3.7 times higher and methane emissions from the animals also dropped. Following tests on sheep, goats and buffaloes, the treated biomass is being fed to cows as well, said Dr. Anand. Utilising the 'delignified' paddy straw in the animal diets offers a sustainable and economical alternative, reducing feed costs and promoting eco-friendly farming practices. Studies are also being carried out at P.V. Narsimha Rao Telangana Veterinary University, Rajendranagar (Hyderabad), to evaluate the effect of fortified fodder developed by CSIR-IICT on the milk yield and quality, said the principal scientist. Scientists are of the view that treated biomass could effectively deal with the growing need for a cost-effective animal fodder with enhanced nutritional efficiency with farmers as direct beneficiaries. The institute has also developed a Dry Anaerobic Digester with Unique Hydrodynamics (DAD-UH) Technology for the generation of CBG and FOM from rice straw and rice husk. A pilot plant, which is being operated on the institute campus for the past 18 months, has shown that about 100 kg and 140 kg of CBG could be generated from one tonne of rice husk and straw respectively, said scientist Sameena. Chief Scientist A.G. Rao said that as per the Centre's SATAT (Sustainable Alternative towards Affordable Transportation) programme, a minimum of two tonnes per day capacity CBG plant can be installed by an entrepreneur, and the gas generated could be supplied to nearby CNG bunks being operated by Oil Manufacturing Companies. These plants are remunerative with a simple payback period of four years with guaranteed CBG and FOM (Fermented Organic Manure) purchase from by the Centre, he said. The pilot plants and the process of reinventing crop residues was showcased during a recent farmers conclave held at the institute, where Telangana Agriculture Secretary M. Raghunandan Rao expressed concern over farmers burning crop residue. The government is proposing to set up agri-based industries using biomass and others, including CNG plants on land belonging to the Agriculture department, he said. Hailing the farm friendly products, CSIR-IICT Director D. Srinivasa Reddy said the institute, which had played a pioneering role in promoting pharma and allied industries, has also been working on developing eco-friendly technologies. 'Resources currently considered as 'waste' are being utilised as 'resources' for the generation of value-added products in addition to complimenting farmers' income,' he added.
