State govt directs revenue department to expedite land acquisition for Thiruvananthapuram airport runway expansion
Thiruvananthapuram: After months of delay, expansion of runway at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport has gained fresh momentum, with the state govt directing officials to fast-track land acquisition and clear all related bottlenecks.
At a high-level meeting chaired by chief principal secretary to the chief minister K M Abraham, the govt instructed the revenue department to expedite procedures for acquiring 22 acres of land needed for the development of the runway end safety area (RESA) — a critical aviation safety feature mandated by international standards. Originally scheduled for completion by Sept 2024, the RESA expansion project has been delayed due to administrative hurdles and land disputes.
The latest govt intervention comes as a push to meet safety norms and accommodate the growing passenger traffic at the international airport. One of the major roadblocks to the expansion has been the 4.5 acres of land under BrahMos Aerospace Ltd, a sensitive defence installation. While the land is essential for the expansion, it falls under the jurisdiction of the Union ministry of defence and its transfer requires Centre's approval.
The state govt is also working on identifying an alternative site for the Chackai fire and rescue station, which lies within the proposed expansion zone. Officials have also confirmed that portions of Chackai–Shanghumugham Road may need to be taken over for the project, however they reassured that the ITI at Chackai would remain unaffected.
Aviation secretary K Biju told TOI that the expansion of the runway is a top priority for both operational safety and long-term development of the airport.
"State govt is fully committed to completing the land acquisition process at the earliest. Coordination with the Union ministry of defence is also underway to resolve the BrahMos land issue," he said.
The project, once completed, will improve safety margins for aircraft operations, particularly during emergency landings and in adverse weather conditions. It will also enable the airport to handle larger aircraft, enhancing its potential as a key aviation hub in southern India.
Airport authorities and AAI officials have welcomed the govt's proactive stance, noting that RESA expansion was critical for retaining international operational certifications.
Revenue and transport officials are expected to intensify measures to complete surveys, initiate compensation packages and begin formal land handovers in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, the development of Terminal 2 (International) under Project Anantha is likely to be delayed due to pending environmental clearance from the State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority.

Thematic display boards are being installed along the Varuna bridge, while road dividers are being freshly painted. Work on enhancing street lighting and greenery is also nearing completion, with multiple agencies working in coordination. On the security front, Commissioner Agrawal said a multi-layered deployment plan has been finalised. Security personnel will be stationed at the venue and across the VIP routes. Measures include rooftop surveillance, deployment of officers in plain clothes, drone monitoring, and route diversions. Traffic diversions will remain in effect from Monday evening until the dignitaries' departure on Tuesday. CM Yogi during his visit to the venue on June 16, had reviewed the arrangements and instructed officials to ensure the timely completion of all pending work. With issues from multiple departments expected to be discussed, senior officials from Union ministries and departments of the four participating states have already started arriving in the city.

Soon, GIS mapping of Sal river and Ponda nullah; digital portal for environmental monitoring in state
Panaji: The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB), at its recent meeting, approved GIS mapping of River Sal and the Ponda nullah to identify the source of pollution in these water bodies. The board noted that it received a number of complaints about pollution in the Sal and the nullah. Besides this, the board said that a writ petition was also filed in the high court, where it was also told to find the source of pollution in these water bodies. The board has accordingly decided to invite e-tenders to carry out the work. Meanwhile, the board approved the issuance of a work order to a selected service provider through e-tendering, chosen to set up a digital portal and dashboard for an online continuous environmental data monitoring system. This dashboard will collect real-time pollution monitoring data from all industrial units in Goa. The server will be operational within six months, the GSPCB told the service provider, who will be paid Rs 85 lakh for the work. 'This portal will enable highly scalable systems that can connect more than 2,000 or all available industries/units of Goa, engaged in online monitoring with all the sites simultaneously in real-time with a non-proprietary, highly scalable back-end database suitable for storing time series data,' the board said in the minutes of its meeting. The Union ministry of electronics and information technology, under the National Air Quality Monitoring Programme and the National Water Quality Monitoring Programme, requires states to carry out continuous noise monitoring, ambient air quality monitoring, effluent monitoring, and emission monitoring. All this data is to be deployed on the empanelled cloud server of the ministry and managed by a bidder under the ownership of the GSPCB. Accordingly, a work order will be issued to create a digital portal and dashboard for a continuous online monitoring system for Goa.

Shah's take on English is his personal view: EPS
Coimbatore: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Saturday said Union home minister Amit Shah's remark that a time would come when English speakers would feel embarrassed was his personal view. "Everyone has their own opinion. What he said was his personal view. He had, at the same time, emphasised on the importance of the mother tongue. Shah pointed out that some people are giving more importance to English than to their native language." Speaking to the media at the city airport, EPS said the public anger against the DMK was growing and that an anti-people govt was governing Tamil Nadu. "To divert attention from this, they are spreading 'derogatory' cartoons. The people would deliver appropriate punishment in the 2026 assembly elections." When asked about International Yoga Day , he said, "Yoga is essential for physical health and the Prime Minister is promoting it, for which he deserves congratulations."
