THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — U.S. President Donald Trump and his NATO counterparts are due to gather Tuesday for a summit that could unite the world's biggest security organization around a new defense spending pledge or widen divisions among the 32 allies.
Just a week ago, things had seemed rosy. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte was optimistic the European members and Canada would commit to invest at least as much of their economic growth on defense as the United States does for the first time.

Czech court cancels for second time ruling that acquits former Prime Minister Babiš of fraud charges

PRAGUE (AP) — Prague's High Court canceled for the second time on Monday a lower court ruling that acquitted former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš of fraud charges in a $2 million case involving a European Union subsidy. The court returned the case for retrial to Prague's Municipal Court to deal with it, saying the lower court, which acquitted Babiš for the second time last year, did not properly assess evidence. Babiš' former associate Jana Nagyová, who signed the subsidy request, will also face retrial. The case centered around a farm known as the Stork's Nest, which received EU subsidies after its ownership was transferred from the Babiš-owned Agrofert conglomerate of around 250 companies to Babis' family members. Later, Agrofert again took ownership of the farm. The subsidies were meant for medium- and small-sized businesses, which Agrofert wouldn't have been eligible for. The conglomerate later returned the subsidy. The lower court previously said what Babiš did was not considered criminal. Babi has become part of the country's opposition after his populist ANO (YES) centrist movement lost the 2021 parliamentary election. He also contended for the largely ceremonial post of president in January 2023 but lost to Petr Pavel, a retired army general. Monday's verdict comes just months before October's parliamentary election in which Babiš and his movement are predicted to win the vote.

Russian attacks on Ukraine kill at least 10 people, most of them in Kyiv

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian drones and missiles killed at least 10 civilians in Ukraine in overnight attacks, local officials said Monday, with seven deaths reported in the capital, Kyiv, where emergency crews raced to search for people believed trapped under a partially collapsed apartment building. Russia fired 352 drones and decoys overnight, as well as 11 ballistic missiles and five cruise missiles, Ukraine's air force said. Ukraine rescue workers check for survivors under rubble as at least 8 killed in Russian strikes

Waves of Russian drones and missiles in and around Kyiv overnight killed eight people, lit up the night sky with fires in residential areas and damaged the entrance to a metro station bomb shelter, Ukrainian officials said on Monday. Rescue workers pulled bodies from the rubble of an apartment block in Kyiv's busy Shevchenkivskyi district, less than a kilometre from the U.S. embassy. Valeriy Mankuta, 33, described clambering from his window to the third floor below to escape after his building was hit by what authorities said was a missile. Reuters photos showed several explosions above apartment buildings in the area. "There were bricks on me, there was something in my mouth. It was total hell. I woke up in the rubble," said Mankuta, a construction worker. At least 34 people, including four children, were wounded in the attacks on Kyiv, the emergencies service said. Ukraine's air force said it downed 339 of 352 drones and 15 of 16 missiles launched by Russia in the attack on four Ukrainian regions. Moscow has stepped up drone and missile strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities in recent weeks as talks to end the war, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, yielded few results. The strikes come a day before NATO's annual summit is held in The Hague and as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Britain to discuss defence. Zelenskyy will meet on Monday with King Charles, Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the speakers of both houses of Parliament, his presidential spokesperson said. He added that the president would talk to Ukrainian military personnel who are being trained in Britain and representatives of think-tanks. The large campus has a department working on aerospace technology. Several academic buildings and four dormitories were also hit, the polytechnic said. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said people could still be under the rubble of buildings after the overnight attacks caused damage in six of the city's 10 districts.
