‘World's biggest great white shark' dubbed ‘The Contender' is spotted by trackers heading towards popular tourist beach
THE biggest white shark ever tagged by scientists has been spotted heading towards a popular tourist beach.
Named 'The Contender', the vast beast hasn't been heard from for several weeks.

The massive shark has been skulking around the North Carolina coast for the past few months.
Scientists keep tabs on its location through a tracker that "pings" whenever the shark's fin breaks the water's surface.
But after several weeks off grid, the behemoth has surfaced again - this time near the popular North Carolina tourist area of Pamlico Sound.
The latest ping sounded on June 7, just before 10pm.
The scientists' tracking map appears to show The Contender making a move north since it last appeared.
Weighing a whopping 1,600 pounds, the shark was first tagged on January 17 this year.
The Contender started its journey about 45 miles off the Florida-Georgia border.
It is the largest ever shark tagged the research group OCEARCH.
The adult white shark measures a staggering 13 feet and nine inches.
Dr Harley Newton, OCEARCH's chief scientist and veterinarian, said: "This time of year white sharks are starting their late spring/early summer migration moving from their southern overwintering area to their summer/fall foraging areas in the northeastern US and Atlantic Canada."
The Contender's previous ping came on May 21, when it was much further south along North Carolina's coast.
However, beachgoers need not panic, as the shark is still swimming a fair distance from the coastline.
Dr Newton added: "We often see the sharks on our global shark tracker spend a period of time off the Outer Banks right before they move north, which is what white shark Contender appears to be doing.
"This may be due to rich food resources in the region and would serve as a time to feed and prepare before what may be a journey of 1,000 miles or more."
OCEARCH's website calls Contender "the ultimate ocean warrior" and a "mature male" specimen.
It adds that his nickname comes in honour of Contender Boats - an old partner of the research group.
The website says: "The SPOT tag deployed on Contender will provide valuable real-time data for approximately five years, helping us track his movements and understand his migration patterns.
"Additionally, we've collected important biological samples, including urogenital material, which are currently being analysed."
It comes after a huge 20ft shark emerged from the water before stalking a tiny boat on Block Island.
The boat was seen slowly drifting towards the edge of the lake, while two dark shapes appeared to rise from the water.

More info Twenty-five British holidaymakers are taking legal action against a posh five-star resort in Cape Verde, following a disastrous 'nightmare' holiday. The anticipated idyllic escape turned into chaos as guests reportedly suffered from gastric illnesses at the Riu Karamboa resort in Boa Vista. They encountered alarming conditions near the buffet area, with birds, flies, and even cats lurking around the food, which was often described as "raw and undercooked," amidst claims of "dirty crockery and cutlery." Sharon Burrow, 56, an NHS worker who paid out £3,000 for a trip to celebrate her early retirement, ended up in hospital with a severe infection. From Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, Sharon recounted that the so-called luxury holiday unfolded into "one of the worst experiences of her life," with health complications still plaguing her eight months after. Penny Robson, 55, a paramedic from London, also shared her ordeal after spending £2,000 for a week-long stay only to endure severe gastric distress – bloating, diarrhoea, nausea, and stomach cramps. Five days into her visit in September 2023, Penny was compelled to abort planned activities, including stargazing and a private island tour, as she grappled with the illness that necessitated antibiotics. Alongside Sharon and others, Penny is involved in a collective of 25 travellers who have recruited solicitors to delve into the hygiene practices at the resort and pursue compensation following their dreadful experiences. Sharon, 56, from Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, flew out to Riu Karamboa for a ten-day getaway on 20 September 2024, reports the Mirror. But around five days into the holiday, she said she started to suffer from aches and pains, and a fever before experiencing stomach cramps and diarrhoea. The mental health worker said: "I was unwell for nearly three weeks and it was one of the worst experiences of my life. Food was served at room temperature and new food was added to existing food. I saw dirty crockery, cats in and around the restaurant and empty plates attracting flies were left on tables. I feel completely let down and while it's too late for me the least I feel I deserve is answers and to raise awareness of what I've been through so hopefully others don't have to." Penny was meanwhile left requiring medical treatment at the resort, including antibiotics and electrolytes, after she fell poorly five days into the holiday. Since returning home, Penny has been left suffering ongoing anxiety, with the illness having a lasting impact on her confidence and wellbeing. She said: "I was looking forward to my holiday and had saved for months. However, the excitement for the holiday quickly disappeared when I started feeling unwell. This has affected my choices and I travel much shorter distances to Europe as I don't feel confident travelling to further afield places. I no longer trust my body and if I ever eat out I constantly worry about food and how it's prepared. I just want answers as to how my holiday became a nightmare." Law firm Irwin Mitchell is currently representing more than 1,400 holidaymakers who suffered serious illnesses linked to holidays in Cape Verde since 2022. Jatinder Paul, the international serious injury lawyer representing those who have fallen ill, said: "This is yet another resort in Cape Verde that has come under the spotlight following reports of serious illness. "We're already representing more than 1,400 British holidaymakers who have suffered gastric illness linked to holidays on the islands over the last three years. Illnesses like are serious and can lead to long-term health complications. It's vital that if any issue are identified, swift action is taken to eradicate the risks to other holidaymakers. They booked what they hoped would be luxury holidays, but the first-hand accounts we've heard about their holiday were anything but luxury. The Riu Karamboa resort told the Mirror: "For RIU Hotels and Resorts, the health and safety of our guests is our highest priority. That is why we adhere to strict Health and Safety protocols and comply with all applicable regulations. Clare Meaning travelled to La Cala de Mijas in the Costa del Sol with her husband and five-year-old, but left the hillside town feeling upset by what they saw. A number of experts have also joined the fight to stop the rides after a number of reviews slammed the town and called for change. The donkeys - and a number of horses - line the centre of the town, waiting for tourists to book a cart ride which the animals then pull along. However, Clare commented that the animals were made to stand in 31C heat for hours on end, often without access to water between rides. Clare - who monitored the situation throughout the day she was in the town - saw that some of the donkeys were even frothing at their mouth. Others were falling down a hill due to fatigue and some were standing in their own urine unable to move. A manager in the hotel Clare was staying at, told her that the donkeys are made to carry out the rides seven days a week. Clare, a nutritionist from Blandford Forum, Dorset, said: "The donkeys looked emaciated. "I'm very animal welfare-minded and this was a completely unnecessary exploitation of animals and there's no need for it. "They weren't even getting water when waiting for a ride. I took my kids to an amazing family-friendly campsite and it has pizza nights, baby donkeys and costs just £5 each a night "Reasonably frequently they were taken out for rides. "We saw one frothing at the mouth and I think the guys that ride them are quite forceful." She added that she believes there is a way in which this practice can be monitored and done in a safe way. However, she also noted that the animals are currently being "used like machines". Clare continued: "I can only guess that this started as a traditional method but over years has been exploited for tourists and the animals are now being used like machines for gain. "It can be done in a way if it's monitored, they do less hours and are well looked after, perhaps. "It's really stuck with me and it's very upsetting to see." "I'm sick of going on trips and crossing paths with exploitation of innocents like this, animals spend endless hours in the sun, tied with short ropes without food or water working 365 days a year. Miserable." Another stated: "The town of Mijas Pueblo is a beautiful gem in the mountains of southern Spain however a poor piece of it is the Burro Taxi, one look at these beautiful creatures tied up under a poor shelter with no food or water just made my mouth go dry. "There was a lower area where some were tied in the shade but again no food and water available an these sweltering conditions and one donkey was very reluctant to leave the shade but was forced to. "These conditions are not good for them, highly advise walking through the town to experience Mijas to the max and improve the welfare of the Donkeys ASAP!" Local resident Lynda, who has lived in and around Mijas for the past 30 years, commented: "I've tried many times over the years to get them to change it. 6 One tourist has even contacted charity Born Free charity, whilst PETA have been lobbying the Mijas mayor Credit: SWNS "Local government always say it's terrible but they never stop anything. "It's a very pretty village and people all want pictures with the donkeys and the owners employ halfwits to get these donkey taxi fares." Lynda also explained how the donkeys work until midnight and then they are just put into lockups in the village. The lockups are also outside so it is "stifling hot" and the ride operators "just stuff as many they can in there". "They're given old stale mushed up bread so they don't have to spend money on proper food," Lynda said. "Then in mornings they come out all filthy and their feet are cracked and broken from all the rides they do." Lynda also believes the practice won't be outlawed due to it's long-standing tradition. 6 Other tourists have called out the town in reviews on Tripadvisor Credit: SWNS She added: "But these donkeys are going to die, they're just slavery there to earn money and that is it. "Over the years we've protested and protested and we finally managed to get a shelter for them to stand under and then we had to protest to get water. "It's barbaric. There's no stables, there's nowhere for them to go." Back in 2019, the town did ban tourists over 12.5 stone from taking donkey rides, however many think this is not enough. Plus, last year, campaigners also called for donkey rides to be banned in a popular UK seaside town.
