Ryots' Commission chairman urges Centre to link NREGS with farm operations
HYDERABAD
Telangana Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Commission chairman M. Kodanda Reddy has urged Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to link the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) with agricultural work to support small and marginal farmers.
In a letter handed over personally during the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan in Hyderabad on Monday, Mr.Reddy said over 85% of India's farmers fall into the small and marginal category and face challenges like high input costs, lack of mechanisation and labour shortages during peak seasons.
Mr.Reddy, who held the agriculture portfolio in the Congress governments in combined Andhra Pradesh during 1989-94, said integrating MGNREGS with farming could ease the labour cost burden and ensure timely operations such as sowing, weeding, harvesting and post-harvest activities. The move would also provide meaningful employment and skill development for MGNREGS workers, while promoting small tools and suitable mechanisation through a dedicated scheme.
In a separate letter, he requested Central funding for the revival of Telangana's minor irrigation tanks under schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (per drop more crop), the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund, or a special package for restoration of water bodies.
Minister for Agriculture Tummala Nageswara Rao also submitted letters to the Union Minister, seeking a regional office of the Coconut Development Board in Telangana, empanelment of oil palm nursery suppliers, a minimum price of ₹25,000 per tonne for oil palm bunches, a review of import duty cuts on crude edible oil and ₹100 crore for the State's horticultural university.

Soon, GIS mapping of Sal river and Ponda nullah; digital portal for environmental monitoring in state
Panaji: The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB), at its recent meeting, approved GIS mapping of River Sal and the Ponda nullah to identify the source of pollution in these water bodies. The board noted that it received a number of complaints about pollution in the Sal and the nullah. Besides this, the board said that a writ petition was also filed in the high court, where it was also told to find the source of pollution in these water bodies. The board has accordingly decided to invite e-tenders to carry out the work. Meanwhile, the board approved the issuance of a work order to a selected service provider through e-tendering, chosen to set up a digital portal and dashboard for an online continuous environmental data monitoring system. This dashboard will collect real-time pollution monitoring data from all industrial units in Goa. The server will be operational within six months, the GSPCB told the service provider, who will be paid Rs 85 lakh for the work. 'This portal will enable highly scalable systems that can connect more than 2,000 or all available industries/units of Goa, engaged in online monitoring with all the sites simultaneously in real-time with a non-proprietary, highly scalable back-end database suitable for storing time series data,' the board said in the minutes of its meeting. The Union ministry of electronics and information technology, under the National Air Quality Monitoring Programme and the National Water Quality Monitoring Programme, requires states to carry out continuous noise monitoring, ambient air quality monitoring, effluent monitoring, and emission monitoring. All this data is to be deployed on the empanelled cloud server of the ministry and managed by a bidder under the ownership of the GSPCB. Accordingly, a work order will be issued to create a digital portal and dashboard for a continuous online monitoring system for Goa.

Shah's take on English is his personal view: EPS
Coimbatore: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Saturday said Union home minister Amit Shah's remark that a time would come when English speakers would feel embarrassed was his personal view. "Everyone has their own opinion. What he said was his personal view. He had, at the same time, emphasised on the importance of the mother tongue. Shah pointed out that some people are giving more importance to English than to their native language." Speaking to the media at the city airport, EPS said the public anger against the DMK was growing and that an anti-people govt was governing Tamil Nadu. "To divert attention from this, they are spreading 'derogatory' cartoons. The people would deliver appropriate punishment in the 2026 assembly elections." When asked about International Yoga Day , he said, "Yoga is essential for physical health and the Prime Minister is promoting it, for which he deserves congratulations."

Announcement on defence equipment factory in Salem soon, says union minister H D Kumaraswamy
Salem: Union steel and heavy industries minister H D Kumaraswamy on Saturday said an announcement regarding the establishment of a defence equipment manufacturing factory on the premises of Salem Steel Plant would be made soon. "The proposal is currently in the early stages of discussion. A formal announcement in this regard will be made in the next four to five months," he said after attending the International Yoga Day celebrations at the Salem Steel Plant, where he did various yoga asanas along with the plant officials, members of trade unions and employees. Addressing the media, he commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi for promoting yoga across the globe and inspiring people. He said efforts were on to revitalize the Salem Steel Plant on the technical and marketing fronts. "In the 2003-2004 financial year, the plant was profitable. However, the profitability has since declined. The primary goal is to redevelop the plant and restore its profitability by developing various new products." Referring to the one nation, one election policy, Kumaraswamy said the BJP was not fostering division, but promoting unity within the country. "The BJP's goal is to strengthen its presence in Tamil Nadu, and the party is actively working to achieve this goal. Hence, some regional parties are criticizing the BJP." On Friday, the Union minister had planted a sapling on the Salem Steel Plant premises and toured the entire facility. He had also met the representatives of labour unions and promised to address their concerns.
