Libya Observer5 days ago

China's Acting Ambassador to Libya, Liu Jian, has described his country as Libya's 'largest and most important trading partner,' highlighting the widespread presence of Chinese products in Libyan households.
In a press release, Liu emphasized Beijing's readiness to support Libya's reconstruction and development efforts once security and stability are fully restored.
'Chinese companies are looking forward to playing an active role in the rebuilding of Libya,' the envoy said, reaffirming China's long-term interest in expanding economic ties.
He also extended an invitation to Libyan public figures and professionals from various sectors to visit China, take part in international exhibitions, and explore opportunities to enhance bilateral cooperation.
The message comes as Libya continues its push to attract foreign investment and rebuild its infrastructure following years of conflict and political instability. China has remained a key trade partner, particularly in construction, energy, and consumer goods. Tags: LibyabChina relations

Libya's parallel government rejects Greece's drilling moves in the Mediterranean

The House of Representatives-designated government has declared its rejection of the actions taken by the Greek government regarding an international call for oil and gas exploration south of the island of Crete. The government, headed by Osama Hammad, affirmed that part of the targeted areas lies within a maritime zone that remains under an unresolved legal dispute with the State of Libya. Hammad's government called on Greece to immediately halt these actions and refrain from taking any unilateral steps, stressing the need for dialogue with Libya to reach fair solutions that safeguard sovereign rights. On Thursday, the Foreign Ministry of the Government of National Unity also expressed deep concern over the Greek authorities' announcement of bids for oil and gas exploration in maritime areas disputed with Libya. The ministry described the move as a blatant violation of Libya's sovereign rights and registered its full rejection and objection to any exploratory activities conducted without prior understanding with the Libyan side. It warned that unilateral approaches only serve to escalate tensions in the region and urged prioritizing dialogue and constructive negotiation as the sole option based on international law. Tetteh: International Follow-up Committee meeting is crucial step to support Libyans' aspirations

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary General and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Hanna Tetteh, described the meeting of the International Follow-up Committee on the Berlin Process for Libya—held Friday in the German capital—as a crucial step to rally international support for the aspirations of the Libyan people. Tetteh extended her 'sincere thanks to Germany for hosting this critical meeting' and expressed her gratitude to 'all members of the International Follow-up Committee on Libya for convening in Berlin for the first time since the last meeting in 2021,' according to a post on her X page. She stated that the collective commitment to Libya's future is not only appreciated, but essential, adding: 'Our top priority remains clear: we must mobilize the international community to support a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process, facilitated by the United Nations.' Tetteh emphasized that the Libyan people's demands for unified and legitimate institutions, as well as peace, stability, and prosperity, are unambiguous. She considered the committee's meeting a decisive step in rallying the international support needed to realize these fundamental aspirations. Meanwhile, the members of the International Follow-up Committee on the Berlin Process expressed regret over the halt in earlier progress toward a political resolution to the Libyan crisis. They warned that this stagnation poses increasing risks to Libya's unity and stability due to the crisis of institutional legitimacy, fragmented governance structures, and the rapidly deteriorating economic and financial situation. The committee convened on Friday in Berlin at the senior official level, co-chaired by the UN Special Representative and Head of UNSMIL, and the German Special Envoy to Libya, Ambassador Christian Buck, to 'support the implementation of a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process facilitated by the United Nations that leads to a political solution to the Libyan crisis,' according to a statement published by UNSMIL on its media platforms.
