Bengaluru: The Karnataka government's proposal to extend daily working hours from 9 to 10 especially for employees in the IT sector has stirred strong reactions. Labour unions, including the Karnataka State IT/ITeS Employees Union (KITU), have slammed the idea, calling it 'modern digital slavery' and raising concerns over employee rights and work-life balance.
KITU warned that such a shift would disrupt the existing three-shift system prevalent in tech companies, potentially replacing it with a two-shift structure. This could result in significant job losses, with up to one-third of workers at risk. The union also highlighted serious health and mental well-being implications, citing the sector's growing incidents of stress-related illnesses, burnout, and even suicides.
'This proposal undermines fundamental rights to personal time, health, and dignity at work,' said a KITU representative. 'It prioritises corporate convenience over human lives. We urge all IT and ITeS employees in Karnataka to stand together and oppose this in the strongest terms.'
Clarification from Labour Minister
In response to the backlash, Karnataka's Labour Minister, Shri Santhosh Lad, issued a detailed press release clarifying that the initiative to amend work-hour regulations was not introduced by the state government but was instead proposed by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India.
According to the minister, the proposal stems from a task force constituted by the Central Government, led by Mr. Manoj Joshi, IAS, Secretary of the Department of Land Resources. This committee held consultations with Karnataka's Chief Secretary and senior state officials.
The two key amendments proposed by the Centre are:
1. An increase in the maximum daily working hours from 9 to 10.
2. Raising the threshold for mandatory compliance under the Shops and Commercial Establishments Act to workplaces with 10 or more employees.
These proposals were forwarded by the Labour Commissioner of Karnataka to the Secretary of the Labour Department on May 30, 2025. The Secretary is now conducting stakeholder consultations with employee unions, industry representatives, and legal advisors to examine the implications.
'To clarify, the proposed changes have been initiated by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India. The state is currently evaluating the matter through a consultative process,' said Shri Santhosh Lad.
Mixed Reactions from Stakeholders
A stakeholder meeting chaired by Labour Secretary Rohini Sindhuri was recently held at Vikas Soudha. Participants included representatives from labour unions, trade bodies such as FKCCI, hotel owners, and business leaders. While business owners welcomed the potential for operational flexibility and weekly offs, unions remained firmly opposed.
'We support the proposal if it guarantees two days off per week or additional compensation for extended work hours,' said P.C. Rao, President of the Bangalore Hotel Owners' Association. Sources suggest that a final decision is pending cabinet approval, and the proposed amendments may be tabled during the upcoming session of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.
As debates intensify, all eyes remain on the government's next steps and how it will balance economic imperatives with employee welfare in one of India's fastest-growing tech hubs.

'In view of the recent developments between Israel and Iran, the Government of India has decided to evacuate from Israel those Indian nationals who wish to leave,' the external affairs ministry said in a statement. 'Special Exception': Iran Opens Airspace To Evacuate Indian Students, Arranges Special Flights

Last Updated: Iran has tapped its national carrier Mahaan Air to evacuate Indian students caught in the Iran-Israel conflict. Iran said it is working closely with Indian authorities to assist in the evacuation of Indian students stranded in the country amid escalating regional tensions in West Asia due to its conflict with Israel. Deputy Chief of Mission at the Iran Embassy in New Delhi, Javed Hosseini, told News18 that three Mahaan Air flights have been arranged to bring students back to India in coordinated batches. 'We are cooperating with India in the evacuation. Indian nationals were first moved to a safer place and then assisted with onward arrangements. Three Mahaan Air flights will bring them home," Hosseini said. 'Airspace is closed, but a special exception has been made for Indian students," Hosseini said. Embassy officials said that around 10,000 Indian nationals are currently in Iran, many of them students. Of these, about 1,000 have already been relocated to safer areas, according to officials aware of the operation. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar earlier confirmed that he had spoken to his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi to coordinate efforts and ensure the safety of Indian nationals. 'We are in touch with Indian officials to convey our concerns and expectations," an Iranian diplomatic source said. The flights are expected to operate from Mashaad to Delhi in stages and more batches are likely to follow. The Embassy of Iran in India also confirmed that the repatriation is being done as part of continued cooperation under Operation Sindhu, India's ongoing evacuation effort. India evacuated students on Wednesday via Armenia. 'India launched Operation Sindhu to evacuate Indian nationals from Iran. India evacuated 110 students from northern Iran who crossed into Armenia under the supervision of our Missions in Iran and Armenia on 17th June. They departed from Yerevan on a special flight and will arrive in New Delhi in the early hours of 19th June 2025," the external affairs ministry said after the students arrived on Thursday. 'The Government of India accords the highest priority to the safety and security of Indian nationals abroad. The Government will continue to monitor the situation closely. The Embassy remains continuously in touch with the community with a view to extending all feasible assistance," it further added. Another 1,000 students are expected to return to India in the coming days. A special chartered flight is scheduled to bring back 56 Indian students from Turkmenistan at 3 AM tomorrow.

'The main goal of this is simplifying real-time verification of PAN details, bank account status, and account holder identities straight from banks' Core Banking Systems (CBS),' the NPCI circular stated. The new facility was announced in a circular dated June 17, a continuation of that initiative, NPCI has now introduced a new PAN and Bank Account Validation API designed specifically for Government departments. This API will facilitate real-time verification of PAN details, Bank account status and accountholder name directly from the bank's Core Banking System (CBS).Utkarsh Bhatnagar, Partner, Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, says, 'This will enable quicker and real time validation of PAN and bank account details of taxpayers accessing the Income Tax website.'According to the NPCI circular on June 17, 2025, "This API will be used by Government departments to verify the customer account details like PAN validation/Account Status Validation/Account holder name validation from their bank CBS.
