US ends Temporary Protected Status for Nepal, grants 60-day transition

The US has terminated the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) provided to Nepal in the wake of the 2015 earthquake, a media report said.
A US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) notice on Saturday said TPS would not be extended for Nepal after its expiration on June 24 this year.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said the beneficiaries would be granted a 60-day transition period through August 5, The Himalayan Times reported.
TPS allows immigrants from designated countries without another legal status to stay in the US for up to 18 months and get legal work authorisation when social circumstances prevent a safe return.
Nepal was initially designated for TPS on June 24, 2015, for a period of 18 months, in the wake of the devastating earthquake that resulted in a substantial, but temporary, disruption of living conditions.
The DHS had extended the designation on October 26, 2016, for an additional 18-month period and multiple occasions thereafter.
"After reviewing country conditions and consulting with appropriate US government agencies, the secretary has determined that Nepal no longer continues to meet the conditions for its designation for TPS. The secretary, therefore, is terminating the TPS designation of Nepal as required by statute," the notice said.
According to the DHS, about 12,700 Nepalese nationals have TPS, with over 5,500 having become legal permanent residents of the US.
Over 7,000 Nepalis will have to return to the country once the TPS is terminated.

Pahalgam terror attack: NIA arrests two for harbouring Pakistani terrorists

Jammu: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) in a major breakthrough has arrested two men for harbouring the terrorists who had carried out the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 tourists and grievously injured 16 others. The two men have been identified as Parvaiz Ahmad Jothar from Batkote, Pahalgam and Bashir Ahmad Jothar of Hill Park, Pahalgam, said the NIA on Sunday in a press release. The two men have disclosed the identities of the three armed terrorists involved in the attack, and have also confirmed that they were Pakistani nationals affiliated with the proscribed terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). Parvaiz and Bashir had knowingly harboured the three armed terrorists at a seasonal dhok (hut) at Hill Park before the attack, as per NIA investigations. 'The two men had provided food, shelter and logistical support to the terrorists, who had, on the fateful afternoon, selectively killed the tourists on the basis of their religious identity, making it one of the most gruesome terrorist attacks ever," said the release. NIA, which has arrested the duo under Section 19 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, is further investigating the case RC-02/2025/NIA/JMU, registered after the attack that shook the world on April 22. Further investigations in the case are continuing, said the NIA. It must be mentioned that on April 22, Pakistan backed LeT terrorists killed 26 civilians, including 25 tourists and a local pony owner, who had tried to stop the terrorists from spilling innocent blood. Among the 25 tourists was a Nepalese national. The attack outraged the entire country, after which Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a free hand to the armed forces to avenge it. India carried out target-specific strikes against terror infrastructure in nine places in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir, including Muridke near Lahore, Bahawalpur, Kotli, and Muzaffarabad. Pakistan retaliated by targeting civilian facilities in Poonch, Rajouri, Kupwara, Bandipora and Baramulla districts of J&K and sending a barrage of drones on the western border. Following this, Indian forces carried out precision attacks on 11 airbases in Pakistan.

Nepal, Sri Lanka thank India for evacuating their nationals from Iran

New Delhi, June 21 (UNI) Nepal and Sri Lanka today thanked India for evacuating their nationals from Iran, amid the escalating Iran-Israel conflict. Nepalese Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba expressed gratitude in a post on X: 'Thank you @DrSJaishankar for India's swift assistance in helping to evacuate Nepali nationals from Iran. 'India's support in Nepal's evacuation efforts is a reflection of strength of Nepal- India ties.' The Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry in a post also expressed its thanks. 'Sri Lanka extends its sincere gratitude to the Government of India for the timely assistance to evacuate Sri Lankan nationals from Iran alongside Indian citizens. 'This act of solidarity exemplifies the strong and enduring partnership between Sri Lanka and India, and is deeply appreciated by the people of Sri Lanka.' Earlier in the day, the Indian Embassy in Tehran said it will help in the evacuation of Nepali and Sri Lankan nationals from Iran, after the Nepalese and Sri Lankan governments approached India for help. On Saturday evening, an evacuation flight from Iran arrived in New Delhi, with 310 Indian nationals on board, taking the number of Indians evacuated to 827 so far, under Operation Sindhu. After a long legal battle between Harvard University and US President Donald Trump, the latter signalled at a possible "deal" between the two. In a post on Truth Social, he said that, "We have been working closely with Harvard, and it is very possible that a Deal will be announced over the next week or so." Earlier, the president had accused Harvard of failing to clamp down and perpetuating antisemitism. He had terminated $2 billion in grants and also tried to ban the school from granting admission to international students. Harvard had pushed back on the administration's demands, labelling them "unconstitutional". The university also argued that the demands restrict academic freedom and had taken legal action over the freezing of funds and attempts to restrict foreign student admissions. However, Harvard is not the only university to be targeted by the Trump administration. Other universities, such as Northwestern University, Cornell, and Columbia, have also had federal funding withheld for similar reasons. "Many people have been asking what is going on with Harvard University and their largescale improprieties that we have been addressing, looking for a solution," Trump wrote on Truth Social, before revealing about the deal. He added that Harvard had "acted extremely appropriately" during the negotiations and "appear to be committed to doing what is right". "If a Settlement is made on the basis that is currently being discussed, it will be 'mindbogglingly' HISTORIC, and very good for our Country," he concluded his post. He made the statement shortly after a federal judge in Boston issued an injunction blocking the US Department of Homeland Security from immediately revoking Harvard's ability to enrol international students. That injunction prevents the US Department of Homeland Security from revoking Harvard's certification in the Student and Exchange Visitor Program without first going through a months-long administrative process, which it now plans to do. International students make up about a quarter of its student body. According to CNN, the deal could potentially resolve the outstanding legal battles between the two parties.
