The Vatican Bank had been linked to Mafia money, shady investments, and hidden corruption for decades. But Pope Francis has made reform a mission. From closing shady accounts to appointing outsiders, he fought to shed light on a highly secretive system.Hounded for decades by Mafia affiliations and corruption, the bank was transformed radically under his leadership, with regime shake-ups in leadership, intensified supervision, and greater transparency, which remapped its future.Pope Francis passed away on Monday, leaving behind a reform legacy at the $6 billion Vatican Bank. Despite being labeled an anti-capitalist by some, Pope Francis's reform of the scandal-plagued $6 billion Vatican Bank was one of his major financial achievements. The Institute for the Works of Religion (IOR), also referred to as the Vatican Bank, was established in 1942 with the intention of overseeing funds for clergy and church organizations worldwide. However, it was allegedly beset by corruption, money laundering, and even Mafia ties for many years. As of 2023, the Vatican Bank held 5.4 billion euros, or $6.1 billion, as per reports by Fortune. However, during Francis' pontificate, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who was born in Argentina, pushed for reforms at the bank that helped eradicate corruption and increase the organization's internal operations' transparency. In order to strengthen regulatory oversight, the bank increased transparency and centralized financial management under Pope Francis. In 2013, the Vatican Bank started publishing annual reports for the first time, detailing its profit, operating expenses, and charitable contributions, among other things, thanks to efforts started under Francis's predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, as per Fortune.Francis reorganized the bank's management in 2014, reducing the influence of clergy in financial matters and appointing French financier Jean-Baptiste de Franssu, formerly CEO of Invesco Europe, to lead the Vatican Bank. Since 2014, the 61-year-old de Franssu has presided over the Vatican Bank.During his tenure, Pope Francis also worked to improve the bank's transparency by enforcing stricter external oversight and adhering to financial regulations. In order to comply with international financial standards, the bank closed thousands of accounts in 2014.Francis also directed all Vatican departments to transfer their funds to the Vatican Bank and close their investment accounts as part of his tighter control over the Holy See.Pope Francis helped strengthen financial regulators' oversight of the Vatican's holdings and deprived non-expert clergy of their financial power by centralizing the organization's finances.A number of scandals, including the failure of Banco Ambrosiano, the biggest bank in Italy, in which the Vatican Bank had a financial stake, prompted Pope Francis to make changes at the Vatican, as per reports by Fortune. He centralized control, replaced leadership, closed shady accounts, and advocated for complete financial transparency.Past scandals have included Mafia-linked advisors, illegal deals, and even the death of a banker under suspicious circumstances.

Iran-Israel war:

Iran-Israel war: "Tehran wants to speak to us, not Europe," says Donald Trump Washington, DC: US President Donald Trump on Friday dismissed a European diplomatic initiative aimed at de-escalating the conflict between Israel and Iran, asserting that Tehran prefers direct talks with Washington instead of engaging with European powers, CNN reported. 'Iran didn't want to speak to Europe, they want to speak to us,' Trump told reporters. This statement shows he is sceptical regarding Europe's ability to mediate in the conflict. 'Israel is doing well in terms of war, and I think you would have to say Iran is doing less well. It's a little hard to get someone to stop,' he said. The Iran-Israel conflict entered the eighth day, with both sides launching missile attacks against each other. British, French, and German foreign ministers met with Iranian officials in Geneva for three hours. The discussions yielded no significant progress, although European ministers emphasised the need for ongoing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict and prevent further regional instability. Despite stepping back earlier from threats of a US military strike and creating a two-week window for negotiations, Trump reiterated his intention to act as a 'peacemaker.'However, he maintained that only direct talks between the US and Iran could lead to a resolution. 'Europe is not going to be able to help,' he said. European officials encouraged Iran to return to nuclear negotiations with the US, but Iran's top diplomat, Abbas Araghchi, refused, saying diplomacy would only resume 'once the aggressor was held accountable for the crimes committed,' CNN Friday, Iran launched a barrage of missiles targeting several Israeli cities, including Haifa and Beersheba. Earlier in the day, a missile damaged multiple buildings in Beersheba, including a medical center that had already been largely evacuated. Later, one of about 35 missiles struck an abandoned building in downtown Haifa, causing heavy damage to nearby structures, including a response to the Iranian attacks, Israel announced that it had carried out retaliatory strikes on missile factories and a research facility linked to Iran's nuclear program, further escalating the hostilities. President Trump expressed hesitation about urging Israel to cease its military action against Iran, citing the current military successes. He indicated that intervening would be more difficult given Israel's apparent progress, although the US remains engaged in diplomatic talks with Iran and is prepared to act as needed. June 21, 1985, Forty Years Ago: Nepal Bomb Blast

At least seven people, including a member of Parliament, were killed and over 20 injured in five bomb explosions which rocked the Nepalese capital. The bombs went off at the west and south gates of King Birendra's palace, in the lobby of the Parliament building and the central secretariat and a five star hotel, Annapoorna, partly owned by the royal family. The first batch of Mirage-2000, the multi role French fighter aircraft that has been acquired by the Indian Air Force, will be flown to India by IAF pilots who have completed flying training in France. India has purchased 40 of these versatile fighter jets under a contract signed in 1983 but the exact number of planes that will constitute the first batch is not known. Some reports have indicated that the batch would consist of five to 10 planes. Shiite Muslim leader Nabih Bern said that he accepted an offer from Switzerland to use its territory to hold any exchange of US hostages seized aboard a hijacked plane for Lebanese prisoners held by Israel. Bern's remarks came after his office said Pope John Paul II had joined diplomatic efforts to resolve the ordeal of 40 American hostages seized aboard the plane. The UN Security Council has issued a 'strong warning' to South Africa that failure to co-operate in speeding up the independence of Namibia could force the world body to adopt punitive measures under the UN charter, including mandatory sanctions. Only Britain and the United States abstained as the council voted 13 to nil for a non-aligned resolution which, among other things, condemned the racist regime in Pretoria for its installation of a so-called interim government in Namibia.

Indian defence delegation meets French officials in Paris; Rafale marine programme formally launched

ANI Indian defence delegation meets French officials in Paris; Rafale marine programme formally launched An Indian defence delegation led by Joint Secretary and Acquisition Manager (Maritime Systems) Dinesh Kumar met with French defence officials at the Paris Air Show on Thursday. The French side was headed by Lt Gen Gael Diaz De Tuesta, Director General of Armament. According to French defence officials, the meeting between the two sides also marked the formal launch of the Rafale marine programme, which already equips the Indian Air Force. Meanwhile, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi on Thursday attended the 12th Key Leader Engagement, which was hosted virtually by US Navy's Pacific fleet Admiral Stephen T. Koehler. Admiral Tripathi highlighted his vision on "achieving maritime security in the Indo-Pacific through innovation and technology" in the Key Leader Engagement on Wednesday, which involved 19 nations. The Indian Navy, in a post on X, said, "Adm Dinesh K Tripathi, CNS, attended the 12th Key Leader Engagement hosted virtually by Adm Stephen T Koehler, @USPacificFleet, on Jun 25, involving 19 nations. CNS highlighted his vision on 'Achieving Maritime Security in the Indo-Pacific Through Innovation and Technology."Earlier, on June 13, Admiral Tripathi said that Operation Sindoor is on a pause, but it is an operation in progress. Speaking to ANI, Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi said, "Operation Sindoor is under pause; it is still underway. As a naval chief, I will reserve my comments on this. It's an operation in progress." He also commented on evolving warfare technology, particularly non-contact warfare and counter-drone systems, underscoring their growing importance. On counter-drone systems, he said that non-contact warfare will stay, and this area of weapons and equipment was not catered to 10-12 years ago. "It is undeniable that non-contact warfare is going to stay. In it, drones and loitering munitions, and therefore defence against them in terms of counter-drone systems, there is a whole series of weapons and equipment that one had probably not catered for 10-12 years ago," he said on Thursday. Reinforcing the focus on indigenous defence capabilities, Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, accompanied by Chairman of Solar Industries India Limited, Satyanarayan Nuwal, reviewed the manufacturing processes of various defence products at the firm's headquarters in Nagpur. Speaking to ANI, the Navy Chief lauded the products and progress made by Solar Industries India Ltd. He added that there needs to be synergy between the public and private sectors, as the latter is new in defence production."It's really eye-opening to see what progress has been made by Solar (Solar Group) in the last 14-15 years. As far as the synergy between the public and private sectors in the defence ecosystem is concerned, it is a must because some public sector companies have been working in this field for many decades, and private companies are relatively new. So there is a need for them to talk to each other and learn from each other," Admiral Tripathi told of Solar Industries India Ltd, Satyanarayan Nuwal, said that they showed the Navy Chief their drones and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and also showed the Navy officials their Counter-Unmanned Aerial System, Bhargavastra. Talking to ANI, Satyanarayan Nuwal said, "Today, we mainly showed our facility with drones and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). We showed the composite manufacturing unit of UAS. We also showed Bhargavastra (Counter-Unmanned Aerial System) to them... This counter-drone system is a significant thing... Considering present situations, we learnt that the biggest need is for long-range missiles. We have already presented a proposal in this regard..." (ANI)
