If we get hostility in return...: Chief of Defence Staff spells out Pak strategy

India Today31-05-2025

Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan underscored that India's current policy against Pakistan was of strategic disengagement as New Delhi received nothing but hostility from Islamabad despite diplomatic outreach.Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue, Asia's premier defence and security summit, General Chauhan said that despite Pakistan being ahead of India in many metrics after Independence, India was now ahead on all fronts - from the economy to human development.advertisement"On the India-Pakistan relationship, we are not operating without a strategy. When we gained independence, Pakistan was ahead of us on every metric: social, economic, GDP per capita. Today, India is ahead on all fronts: economic performance, human development, and social harmony, despite our greater diversity," General Chauhan said.
He underlined that India had reached out to Pakistan several times, like in 2014 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited then-premier Nawaz Sharif to his oath ceremony after the BJP's win in the Lok Sabha polls. The next year, PM Modi made a surprise stop in Lahore to meet Sharif and wish him on his birthday."Diplomatically, we have reached out like in 2014 when the PM invited Nawaz Sharif. But it takes two hands to clap. If all we get in return is hostility, then disengagement may itself be a sound strategy for now," he said.ON OPERATION SINDOOR AND AKASH SYSTEMadvertisementSpeaking on Operation Sindoor, the Chief of Defence Staff pointed out how indigenous platforms like the Akash missile system were used effectively to neutralise attacks from Pakistan. In the same breath, he highlighted that integrated radars, built into a cohesive network across India, proved to be crucial."We have not only used indigenous platforms like the Akash missile system effectively, but we have also built our own networking infrastructure for air defence without relying on foreign vendors. We have integrated radars from multiple sources into a cohesive network across India and that was crucial," General Chauhan said. The Akash missile system was pivotal in thwarting Pakistan's sustained drone and missile attacks during Operation Sindoor, India's response to the Pahalgam terror attack, earlier this month. In retaliation, Indian forces targeted 11 key Pakistani military sites, including the Nur Khan air base, which is just 10 km from the Army headquarters.Must Watch

'Operation Sindoor achieved all objectives': Defence minister Rajnath Singh praises armed forces; unveils President Murmu's book

Defence minister Rajnath Singh addresses the gathering at Rashtrapati Bhavan Complex (ANI) Defence minister Rajnath Singh had said on Monday that Operation Sindoor had succeeded in 'injecting fear' in the minds of terrorists and had achieved all its objectives. He was speaking at an event held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Complex. He asserted that under the leadership of the supreme commander of the Armed Forces, Indian soldiers carried out Operation Sindoor and were successful in achieving all its objectives. In the event, Singh unveiled a curated collection of 51 speeches delivered by President Draupadi Murmu and stressed that it would become a 'karma granth' of the 'Viksit Bharat' vision. The book is titled 'Wings to Our Hopes-Volume II' and its Hindi version 'Ashaon Ki Udaan-Khand 2', along with an e-version, were released by the defence minister. The ministry of information and broadcasting said in a statement on Sunday that the 51 speeches reflect President Murmu's vision, philosophy, and key priorities during her second year in office from August 2023 to July 2024. "The book will become a guiding light to build Viksit Bharat with progressive thoughts while preserving our glorious heritage. President Droupadi Murmu knows the importance of diversity in our country and recognises the pain of the deprived. This book proclaims the spirit of equality," Singh said. The defence minister remarked that the book brings together President Murmu's insights and ideas across a wide range of subjects, from civilisation and culture to religion, science, art, literature, education, health, and the journey from past to future. Singh asserted on President Murmu being the best example of women-led development in India. On Saturday, Singh had said that Operation Sindoor was not over yet, and that India was ready to take 'all kinds of action against terrorism' while addressing troops of the Army's Udhampur-based Northern Command on the 11th International Yoga Day. Singh had warned that the military action in Pakistan, a retaliation for the Pahalgam attack, was a clear message that it would face the consequences for supporting terror activities against India.

Karnataka CM inaugurates development works worth 936 crore in Raichur

Raichur (Karnataka) [India], June 23 (ANI): Development works worth Rs 936 crore were inaugurated in Raichur, Karnataka, on Monday, reaffirming the Congress Government's commitment to delivering on its promises, said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, as per an official statement from the Karnataka Chief Minister's Office (CMO). He was speaking after inaugurating the Tribal Cultural Festival organised by the Scheduled Tribes Welfare Department and the District Administration, unveiling the nameplate of Adikavi Maharshi Valmiki University, and participating in the 371st Dashamanotsav celebrations. 'Our government is committed to development. We had promised 560 guarantees during this election. Already, 235 of these have been fulfilled, and the remaining will be completed in the next three years,' the Chief Minister said. He criticised the previous BJP government, accusing it of neglecting development and now resorting to false propaganda out of frustration over Congress' achievements. 'From 2013 to 2018, our previous government fulfilled all the promises made and even 30 more that were not part of the manifesto,' he recalled. Highlighting the 'steep price rise' under the Modi-led government, the CM pointed out how the prices of gold, silver, rice, pulses, cooking oil, LPG, petrol, diesel, and fertilisers have risen sharply, burdening ordinary citizens. 'Despite being in power at the Centre, the BJP is lying shamelessly to the people,' he charged. Emphasising the historical importance of Article 371J for Kalyana Karnataka's progress, CM Siddaramaiah reminded that it was the result of the relentless efforts of Congress leaders like Mallikarjun Kharge and Dharam Singh, supported by the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government. 'The BJP opposed this historic step. When Vajpayee was Prime Minister, Advani said that 371J was not possible,' he said. Since coming to power, the Congress government has allocated Rs 13,500 crore for Kalyana Karnataka's development, with a commitment to allocate more funds going forward. 'Due to 371J, our youth are now becoming engineers, doctors, IAS, IPS, ACs, and DCs. This is our achievement,' he said. Thanking the people of Kalyana Karnataka for electing Congress in all five Lok Sabha seats from the region, he said, 'The blessings of the people of Raichur district are always upon us. Kalyana Karnataka will remain a stronghold of Congress.' Lashing out at the BJP for 'betraying' Karnataka, he said, 'Even though they are in power at the Centre, BJP leaders have failed to correct the injustice done to Karnataka. No BJP or MP has raised their voice to protect the state's interests. This is their true character.' 'I will be visiting Delhi today to demand that the injustice done to Karnataka by the 15th Finance Commission be corrected at least in the 16th Finance Commission. I will be meeting the Union Finance Minister regarding this,' the Chief Minister announced. The CM predicted that Raichur MLA Raja Venkatappa Nayak Daddal has a bright future and will secure victory in the 2028 elections. (ANI)
