Bond 007 mates will be shaken and stirred if The Inflictor wins Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap on Saturday

News.com.au10-06-2025

The members of syndicate Bond 007 will be both shaken and stirred if The Inflictor can complete a fairytale story and win Saturday's $3m Stradbroke Handicap.
The seven mates are living the dream, with the four-year-old gelding making the Stradbroke field after last December winning the $300,000 The Gateway, which offers a golden ticket into Queensland's premier race.
Some members of Bond 007 had placed bets on The Inflictor at $201 for the Stradbroke after his The Gateway victory and will collect a small fortune if jockey Cejay Graham can win her first Group 1 on Saturday at Eagle Farm.
And that's not even mentioning the $1.8m cheque which will be shared among connections of the winning horse.
'We're just pinching ourselves that we're even here really,' syndicate member Jim Matthews said at the Breakfast at the Stars at Eagle Farm on a chilly Brisbane morning on Tuesday.
'It's a dream just to have a runner in a Group 1. Whatever he does on the weekend is a bonus but we think he'll run well.
'It's the biggest race in Queensland. It's crazy to even think about it.'
The Bond 007 members are good mates from way back, having played and coached together for the
Moreton Bay AFL club (formerly Caboolture Lions) some 20 years ago.
Just like The Inflictor's trainer Craig Cousins, they're Aussie battlers riding a wave of emotion built on a passion for horse racing and a love of the punt.
'We all played footy together 15 or 20 years ago and everyone was into a punt on a Saturday,' Matthews said.
'Over time we said 'why don't we chip in and get into horse racing?'
'We started with seven in the syndicate which is why we called it Bond 007.'
Asked about the wild celebrations if The Inflictor can win the biggest race of his career, syndicate leader Shane Pleming joked that it could be a heart-stopping affair.
'I don't know what will happen. One of us already has a heart problem but the rest of us, we might all drop dead in the stands,' Pleming said with a laugh.
'But look, he's a stunning horse and he keeps getting better. It's easy to train a good horse and Craig has done a great job because he looks magnificent.
'We're right in it because they're all talking about the favourite (War Machine) but we ran just as good a time carrying 61.5kg and he carried only 56.5kg on the same day at Doomben (on May 24).'
Hobby trainer and truck driver Cousins, who only has three horses in work, would deliver one of the great Stradbroke stories if he can win on Saturday.
'He's just a decent bloke,' syndicate member John Jeffrey said.
'He's a battler and happy to admit it but he does a good job because the horse always looks well and he races well.
'It'd be a fairytale, there's no doubt about it. Two years ago we were out at the Sunny Coast, up in Toowoomba, out at Gatton, all the provincial tracks and now we're in a Group 1.'

‘Cannot let that go': Ugly moment proves Carlton has lost the plot

Leading Fox Footy analyst David King has exposed Carlton in brutal fashion after an ugly moment during their loss to North Melbourne. The Blues were 'bullied' in eyes of legendary goalkicker Jonathan Brown as North Melbourne came from behind to leave the axe hovering over Carlton coach Michael Voss' head with a 13.6 (84) to 10.13 (73) win at the MCG. Leading by nine points at the first change, Carlton gave up 12 goals to three over the next two quarters as fans began booing Blues players. FOX FOOTY, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every match of every round in the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season LIVE in 4K, with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer. King on Sunday showed a concerning sight for Blues supporters when cameras captured a moment where star ruckman Tom De Koning was 'put into the fence' by Kangaroos ruckman Tristan Xerri without any counter-strikes from angry Blues teammates. Blues star Patrick Cripps and Ollie Hollands were the only players to make an effort on De Koning's behalf. King said the moment tells you everything you need to know about the Blues as their season slipped to a 6-8 record. You can watch the footage in the video player above. 'Ollie Hollands comes up and gives the most gentle of taps, the captain (Patrick Cripps) walks in and hardly affects Xerri's walking pattern. What is that from Adam Cerra?,' King said. 'Not one other player comes in to remonstrate as their big ruckman gets to his feet.' King showed another piece of vision from behind the goals which showed Xerri walked past Blues players at the interval and wasn't met with any hostile treatment, reports. 'Every team I played in would've come for him and made a stand: 'We're not having that happen to one of our boys. This is one of our brothers. This is the guy we go to battle with. I've got your back, you've got mine',' King added. 'That is not the case at Carlton and that permeates through the group. You cannot let that go unchecked. 'When Michael Voss says, 'We were bullied today', that's what he's talking about. 'A Carlton fan would be saying: 'What's happened to my proud club? Where's the fight?' King said it's a moment Carlton's senior players would want back to make a stand for their teammate. 'Patrick had to be stronger. I don't care if he gave away a free kick, the game was gone anyway. I was really disappointed,' the Roos great said. 'In that moment you're allowed to lose your mind a fraction. 'Jacob Weitering, Sam Docherty, George Hewett. They've got so many senior core players who could've done more to fly the flag.' The heat is well and truly on Brisbane Lions legend Voss. Gerard Healy commented on Fox Footy: 'Vossy needs a miracle right now.' That's when Brown gave the ultimate insult towards an established team facing one of the most inexperienced lists in the AFL. 'They're getting bullied,' he said of the Blues. 'They're getting beaten up, they're getting beaten up by a younger midfield for North Melbourne. The whole team for that matter. 'Michael Voss would be extremely disappointed. When a team physically confronts you, you either stand up or you roll over. 'Carlton have rolled over against a younger team.' When the Blues kicked the ball from side to side in their back half nearing three-quarter-time, the boos continued and Brown said: 'This isn't going to get you back in the game. 'That's why the crowd's booing.'

David Vandyke will chat with the owners of Philia before deciding whether to chase spring riches in Sydney or Melbourne

Sunshine Coast trainer David Vandyke will hold a roundtable discussion with the owners of brilliant filly Philia before deciding whether to chase spring riches in Sydney or Melbourne. But the one thing set in concrete is that Philia will enjoy a deserved six-week break after her meteoric rise when she went from a maiden winner in late February to a brave, but ultimately fruitless, effort in this month's Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m). Philia went into the Oaks on a four-race winning streak but her campaign came to a flat end when the daughter of All Too Hard could only manage eighth in the $700,000 contest won by the Kris Lees -trained You Wahng at Eagle Farm. Irwin Racing and Harris Family Racing own the talented three-year-old filly, who has won four of her seven races and just under $358,000 in prizemoney. 'We're considering options in Victoria and Sydney,' Vandyke said on Sunday. 'We're not sure which direction we'll go yet. One of the owners is overseas (in Aspen, Colorado) at the moment. 'The only thing set in stone is that we'll give Philia a six-week break now and during that period I'll meet with the owners to discuss which direction we head. 'They're all very knowledgeable and intelligent people. It'll just be nice if we can have a roundtable discussion and share all our thoughts before making a firm decision. 'There's some great prizemoney in Sydney now with the Silver Eagle and Golden Eagle and races like that.' . @KPMcEvoy guides Philia to victory in The Roses for @vandykeracing13! — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) May 24, 2025 The Group 1 Golden Eagle (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens on November 1 is worth a massive $10 million while the lead-up Group 3 Silver Eagle (1300m) on October 18 at Randwick offers $1m in prizemoney. Vandyke said Philia could take a different path in Melbourne to compete in the $300,000 Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) on October 18 at Caulfield before heading to the $1m Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) at Flemington two weeks later. 'I definitely won't give her more than three runs in the spring, preferably two,' Vandyke said. 'Then we'll really concentrate on a good, hard prep for her in the autumn.' Vandyke said the signs pointed to Philia being competitive against top-class opposition down south. TAB has posted Philia as a $26 chance in the Empire Rose Stakes and $51 in the Golden Eagle. Philia dominates Race 7 at Eagle Farm for @vandykeracing13! @KPMcEvoy — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) April 26, 2025 • 'That's their Melbourne Cup': Dolan delivers on Oughton in Eye Liner 'She'll improve from the break and the experience that she's got from this preparation,' he said. 'How much she improves remains to be seen but she's a lovely horse and time will be her friend. 'Going from a maiden to a Group 2 win (in the 2000m The Roses at Doomben on May 24) is wonderful and she's obviously a valuable asset now. 'We'll just protect her and look forward to hopefully seeing her build on her record.'
