Chou Tien-chen to meet Anders Antonsen in Indonesia Open badminton final, as top two seeds exit
JAKARTA - Chou Tien-chen of Taiwan beat world number one Kunlavut Vitidsarn 21-16 23-21 in the Indonesia Open in Jakarta on June 7 to set up a final against Anders Antonsen, who defeated defending champion Shi Yuqi.
Second seed Vitidsarn shot out of the blocks in both games and racked up 5-1 leads but the 35-year-old Chou showed great resilience, fighting back to secure a spot in his first final since last month's Taipei Open.
China's Shi began his semi-final strongly, taking the first game 21-9, while third-seeded Antonsen was much more competitive in the second game and pounced on a string of errors from the top seed to wrest control of the match.
Shi had the lead early in the tight third game but Antonsen rose to the challenge to win 9-21 21-18 21-19 - his first victory over the two-times Asian Games gold medallist since January 2024.
In the women's draw, top seed An Se-young of South Korea faced third-seeded Akane Yamaguchi, the second time the pair had met in the semi-finals of a Super 1000 tournament this year.
Much like their meeting at the All England Open in March, reigning Olympic champion An held off her Japanese opponent to win 21-18 21-17 and secure a spot in the Indonesia Open final for a third time in her career.
An will come up against Wang Zhiyi in the June 8 final after the Chinese world number two beat compatriot Han Yue 21-12 21-13 in 39 minutes. REUTERS

The 25-year-old Czech, who had dropped to 164th in the world after an injury-plagued 12 months, was playing her first final since winning Wimbledon in 2023. She was made to work hard for a 7-6(10) 4-6 6-2 victory and even had to save six set points in the tight first-set tiebreak. Her win comes a week before the start of Wimbledon where Vondrousova will now be a force to be reckoned with. "Nice to see a full crowd. I really enjoyed the tennis week and the support," the Czech said after winning her third career title. "Congrats on a great week, you played an amazing match," she said, addressing Wang. "It was an amazing week we had everything we needed. "I feel like it could not have been better for us here. We were all working really hard. We came here to try and win the first match. So very happy," Vondrousova added. Wang, who had to battle through the qualifying process and then beat four top-20 players to reach her first-ever tour final, kept causing problems with her pinpoint accuracy as she fired repeated baseline winners. Vondrousova's serve looked unbreakable until Wang earned her first break point in the seventh game, breaking Vondrousova who slipped and hurt her ankle on that point. But the Czech came back to snatch the tie-break after the 23-year-old Wang had wasted six set points. The 23-year-old showed few nerves in her maiden singles tour final and levelled after breaking her opponent once in the second set. But Vondrousova, who beat Australian Open champion Madison Keys in the first round and world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals in Berlin, raced back with two breaks of her own to go 4-1 up in the decider. She then played a perfect service game at 5-2, with a superb dropshot, a crosscourt backhand winner and a powerful forehand that forced an error by Wang on matchpoint number one. England steady the ship with Brook after India remove centurion Pope
LEEDS, England - India dismissed England's overnight centurion Ollie Pope early on the third day of their opening test at Headingley on Sunday but Harry Brook helped the hosts to reach 327-5 in their first innings and they trailed by 144 runs at lunch. Resuming on 209-3 in reply to India's 471 all out, England were dealt a blow when Pope perished for 106 after adding only six runs to his score on Saturday, before Brook got his eye in and steadied the ship with some crisp hitting. The right-hander, dropped on zero a day earlier and again on Sunday, made India pay by bringing up his 12th test half-century to remain unbeaten on 57 at the break with Jamie Smith enduring a nervy moment to make 29 not out in his team's robust reply.
