FAM launches ‘Elite Games' to scout next-gen Harimau Malaya stars, says national U-23 coach
PETALING JAYA, June 19 — The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has introduced the 'Elite Games' project aimed at scouting talented young players with the potential to don the Harimau Malaya jersey in the future.
National Under-23 (U-23) head coach Mohd Nafuzi Zain said an initial group of 26 players from across the country will be called up for the project's first camp, scheduled from June 23 to 26.
He said the inaugural camp also formed part of preparations to shortlist 30 players for centralised training ahead of the Asean U-23 Championship 2025, to be held in Jakarta from July 15 to 29.
'We have many young players with potential, so the Elite Games initiative is to monitor them in preparation for the Asean U-23 Championship.
'We'll bring in players from June 23 to 25 for a short stint, during which we'll conduct sparring games where players compete against each other. If they perform well, they stand a chance of being included in the 30-man squad for the Asean U-23 central training camp,' he told reporters today.
He said the centralised training for the Asean U-23 tournament will run from July 1 to 12 before the team departs for Jakarta on July 13.
Malaysia have been drawn into Group A alongside host nation Indonesia, the Philippines and Brunei for the Asean U-23 Championship 2025, which runs from July 15 to 29 in Jakarta.
The national U-23 side will kick off their campaign against the Philippines on July 15, followed by matches against Brunei on July 18 and Indonesia on July 21.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals scheduled for July 25, with the third-place playoff and final set for July 29.
Meanwhile, Harimau Malaya technical director Tan Cheng Hoe said the 'Elite Games' project was the result of discussions with national team head coach Peter Cklamovski and Mohd Nafuzi.
He said beyond the Asean U-23 tournament, the initiative will also help Mohd Nafuzi prepare for the AFC U-23 Asian Cup Qualifiers 2026 from Sept 3-9 and the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, scheduled from Dec 9-20.
Cheng Hoe also expressed hope that the programme could be held monthly, with a focus on identifying emerging talent from U-20 and U-18 players nationwide, who could later be included in the Harimau Malaya squad. — Bernama

Malaysia's CAFA Nations Cup 2025 debut: A key test
MALAYSIA'S first-ever appearance in the 2025 edition of the Central Asian Football Association (CAFA) Nations Cup in Uzbekistan from Aug 26 to Sept 9 will provide the best platform to evaluate the team's actual progress. Harimau Malaya head coach Peter Cklamovski expects his men to be tested on and off the pitch at the tournament, which brings together eight teams, including Iran and Uzbekistan, who have qualified for the 2026 World Cup. 'The experience gained will be vital for the continued development of the national team,' he posted on the Malaysia NT Facebook page today. The other teams expected to take part are Oman, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. 'We are proud to participate in the CAFA Nations Cup 2025. 'This tournament is an opportunity for the Harimau Malaya squad to bring glory to the country, boost the spirit of the supporters and continue to strengthen unity,' Cklamovski said. 'Harimau should pounce on rare Nations Cup opportunity'
KUALA LUMPUR: The Central Asian Football Association (CAFA) Nations Cup offers a rare opportunity for Harimau Malaya to play world class teams outside Southeast Asia, said Datuk Jamal Nasir. Former international Jamal said this means Malaysia will not have to play the same old faces again in the region. And the national side get to prove themselves against more physical and tactically advanced nations. "Going to the Cafa Nations Cup is good exposure for our team because there are higher-ranked teams there. These are Arab nations, and we've had little exposure to them and we always lose. So now we have a chance to prove that we are better," he said. Jamal pointed out that playing against the World Cup-qualified sides will give Malaysia a better sense of where they stand and what needs to be improved. "It will help a lot because we are playing against World Cup teams and we get to see whether our standard is coming up. We can head in that direction if we perform well during this tournament," he said. Jamal credited Regent of Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim and Fifa council member Tan Sri Hamidin Amin for using their networks to get Malaysia into the Nations Cup. He also supports the national team's move to "play less against Asean teams" and focus more on matches outside the region. "It's not that we belittle Asean teams, but we must move forward. Playing Arab nations is the best decision, and I credit those responsible. "If we perform well in these Arab tournaments, I'm confident Malaysia will improve even further and can take on bigger teams after this. I believe we can qualify for the final round of the Asian Cup," he said. Meanwhile, it is learnt that there will be a joint restructuring of the country's youth football development programme in July by the Youth and Sports Ministry, FAM, the Education and Higher Education Ministries.
