From The Jam celebrate decades of music and friendship

The Courier25-04-2025

Times have been hard for From The Jam away from the concert halls in recent years.
The legacy rockers' frontman Russell Hastings suffered a heart attack in 2022, then bassist Bruce Foxton, 69, signalled his intention to retire from touring in January amid ongoing cancer treatment.
As if those blows weren't enough, the pair had to contend with the unexpected death of their friend and ex-bandmate Rick Buckler, also 69, the following month.
'I was devastatingly shocked,' Hastings tells me, reflecting on the passing of the legendary Jam drummer.
'I was in Thailand when I heard, somebody called me. I heard about six hours before the news broke in England and you could literally have pushed me over with a feather, and I phoned Bruce, who was just as shocked as I was.'
Singer-guitarist Russell Hastings formed The Gift with original Jam drummer Rick Buckler in 2006.
The Gift was a vehicle for playing The Jam's music and the line up extended to another original Jam member when Foxton joined and the musicians changed the band name to From The Jam.
Sticksman Buckler left in late 2009 but remained a close ally.
Hastings makes it clear he's firmly in both his and his followers' thoughts as the four-piece's tour to celebrate The Jam's 1979 fourth LP Setting Sons reaches its halfway point in Perth tonight.
'We've got a lovely huge backdrop of Rick,' he explains.
'It's 25 by 20 foot – a big photograph blown up – and he sits proudly looking down on us all night which makes the crowd very emotional. Also, I've been playing Thick As Thieves off the album for Rick these past few weeks because it always reminds me of him.
'We were very close in that period we were working together and I think people hold that song very close in their hearts and identify with it.'
Thankfully, Foxton has felt strong enough in recent weeks to put his own plans to exit live music on hold. 'There's a lot of things you can't plan in life, but Bruce has had a great time and it's what he's done since 1974,' says Russell, 59.
'That's 51 years, and just to quit doing that is not something that he wants to do, so we're all happy. We love each other's company anyway, we've been best of friends for the last 20 years.'
Featuring the first of The Jam's 10 top 10 hits Eton Rifles – they had four No1s – Setting Sons was a part-concept album about the lives of three boyhood friends whose bonds are irrevocably loosened by the experience of war.
Hastings can still remember the joy of taking his copy of the album to his local youth club in West Sussex in 1979 and it playing loud on the venue's disco speakers.
Given that From The Jam perform material from every phase of a prolific recording career, it's understandable that he refuses to nominate the opus as the Paul Weller-led outfit's finest offering.
'The Jam went wonderfully through very different periods and I think Setting Sons was as different as Sound Affects, and that was as different as All Mod Cons,' he declares.
'Collectively they're all a great body of work, and I enjoyed The Gift as much as I enjoyed In The City. It's just where you're at in life when you heard these albums and you relate that back.
'From playing this stuff I see people going back night after night in their memory banks. They get highly emotional about it and literally go delving into their childhood or teenage years.
'Music is the only thing that really does that apart from hypnotherapy.'
Russell says From The Jam have never sought to replicate the sound of any album on stage – and that continues with Setting Sons.
'I just go and play the song from memory and I guess that's why it's worked over the years,' he adds.
'It's always been like that, even from the moment me and Rick started playing together, and I've never gone out to try and emulate Paul's voice.
'There isn't a song on the album that I don't enjoy playing, although Wasteland is my favourite at the moment, it's a beautiful track. The great thing about Paul's songwriting is he was just a normal guy everybody could identify with and could capture that in a moment.'

Kanye West leaves onlookers gobsmacked as he's spotted shopping in Magaluf

Kanye West and his wife, Bianca Censori, have popped up in a tourist shop in Magaluf, Spain, after shocking the locals with their appearance in the country last month Kanye West and his wife, Bianca Censori, have been papped in Magaluf as they made their return to Spain. The couple were in the country last month, causing quite a stir when Bianca strolled through a Mallorcan market, wearing next to nothing, accompanied by the controversial rapper. In new snaps, the couple can be seen in a gift shop, next to the crisp aisle, perusing a whole host of knick-knacks, including pool inflatables, soft toys, bottle openers, and penis-shaped straws. Barmaid, Carla Ingham, heard the rapper, 48, was out shopping with his 30-year-old wife from a workmate and reported that Kanye was looking at a display with Bianca, who was sporting a figure-hugging short black bodysuit, designer sunglasses and cream heels. ‌ Carla, who has lived in Magaluf for nearly 20 years, told What's The Jam: 'My workmate Lucas first spotted him heading into the supermarket next door. ‌ 'So I started filming myself walking into the shop. I called out: 'Hey Kanye'", but it appears the Gold Digger star didn't answer. Bianca and Kanye are reportedly staying on the island for six weeks after "horrifying" locals during a recent trip to Spain after the Aussie architect bared her breasts. Kanye was seen out and about at a Spanish market in Mallorca with his wife, who left onlookers gobsmacked with her racy attire. The model wore a black fishnet style bra top, baring her nipples and leaving bystanders horrified as they visited the market. The pair seemed happy and relaxed during their time in Spain, however, witnesses say locals were left horrified by Bianca's outfit choice for their market tour, with one even heard asking if that was her "real nipple" as she bared all in her sheer bra. "People were horrified. They could be heard asking, 'Is that her real nipple?' as they walked by. Kanye was standing back a little, letting her browse the market," a witness told ‌ While Bianca didn't break any laws on the island, people were left fuming by her outfit choice. "Why hasn't this woman been arrested for indecency yet!!!?' one person wrote. With another adding: "We have literally seen it all, even when we didn't want to,' another said, while a third wrote: 'So disrespectful to the country and their modest views." "How do they get away with this nudity? If any other non-celeb tried it, they would be arrested," another shared. Of course, it's the first time the architect has sparked outrage with her outfit choices. At the Grammys this year, Bianca arrived with Kanye and was wearing a black fur coat, before she dropped it to the floor and posed in a nude dress, leaving nothing to the imagination. At the time, X was awash with comments about her outfit choice. One wrote: "Kanye and that lady should be arrested for that stunt on the red carpet...... #GRAMMYs." "Every single time I have seen Kanye's wife naked was against my will," another said, while a third quipped: "Kanye's wife is fully naked.... does this event not have a dress code? Kanye West and Bianca Censori at Grammys. Completely Disgusting."

America's queen of jams savages Meghan Markle's latest 'As Ever' fruit spread: 'There's no excuse for this'

The Duchess of Sussex may have set the tills ringing with the latest 'As Ever' merchandise, but her new apricot spread has been savaged by critics – within hours of going on sale. Champion jam-maker Donna Collins said: 'It's a real disappointment that Meghan is selling a fruit spread, which is what you make when your jam fails. In the jam industry a spread is what we call something that didn't work. 'It can have the best ingredients, but if I had a jam that was too runny, I'd slap a label on it and call it a spread. There's no excuse for this. It should be perfect.' Ms Collins, who owns Jelly Queens jam company and has won more than 40 world championship honours in jam-making competitions, also queried the ingredients in Meghan's spread. The jars, sold in keepsake packaging for £10 or plain for £7, list conventionally grown apricots, dried organic apricots, organic pure cane sugar and fruit pectin. 'Why should she include conventionally grown apricots, which will have used pesticides?' said Ms Collins. 'And why is she using pectin, which is a gelling agent, unless it's because her spread was too runny? Most spreads don't use pectin.' Meghan launched her 'As Ever' brand in April with a raspberry spread, which critics attacked for being ill-suited for spreading on bread or toast. Many fans who jumped online the moment Meghan's 'As Ever' products went up for sale on Friday were disappointed to learn the apricot spread had sold out. Ms Collins added: 'Her apricot spread sold out in minutes, just like her earlier raspberry spread, which may mean they only made a small batch. 'I don't know who's making her spread, but we all know it's not Meghan. It sounds like they really don't know what they are doing.' Maureen Foley, owner of Red Hen Cannery near Montecito, said she suspected Meghan wanted to make a spread to take advantage of marketing opportunities. 'She may be smart trying to fill a niche,' said Ms Foley. 'Spreads can be sweet or savoury, and used on dishes for all meals, so perhaps it's just clever marketing.'

BREAKING NEWS Meghan Markle shares a new photo as she launches new products from her As Ever brand today (and promises fans, 'sweet things and delicious surprises')

Meghan Markle will today release a hotly-anticipated restock of items from her lifestyle brand two months after the first batch of products sold out within an hour. The Duchess of Sussex teased the launch with an Instagram post on her As Ever account at midnight Pacific Time (8am UK time) this morning, with a new photograph of her smiling on a garden swing with the simple caption: 'No more sleeps'. Meghan had promised some 'delicious surprises' after describing the April launch of her As Ever products including jam and herbal tea as 'absolutely extraordinary'. In an Instagram post on June 16, the California-based Duchess wrote: 'Oh yes, honey… sweet things await. Mark your calendars for June 20 at 8am PT – we're bringing back your favorites, plus some delicious surprises you won't want to miss!' Pacific Time is eight hours ahead of BST, meaning the launch will be at 4pm UK time. In a newsletter issued on June 16, the former Suits actress also wrote: 'First off, a sincere thank you for making the debut of As Ever absolutely extraordinary. 'We had a feeling there would be excitement, but to see everything sell out in less than an hour was an amazing surprise. We are pleased to share that on June 20th, we're going live with the products you love – plus, some new delicious surprises.' The latest email was noticeably different to Meghan's first As Ever message, which was a long piece full of inspirational quotes and personal anecdotes. Sarah Schmidt, celebrity publicist and president of PR firm Interdependence, told MailOnline on Wednesday: 'Meghan's first As Ever newsletter was poetic and intimate. 'It positioned the brand as an extension of her personal rituals and values, written in the voice of someone building a lifestyle, not just selling a product. 'The latest email, by contrast, is pure transaction: short, strategic and sales-focused. And that pivot is telling.' She explained that the audience is now witnessing a 'shift' in Meghan from a 'founder-as-storyteller' to 'founder-as-operator.' Ms Schmidt added: 'It suggests a brand moving from emotional origin story into operational scale. However, when key team members exit and the tone tightens, audiences can feel that. 'If the first email said, 'Come into my garden,' the second says, 'Get ready to shop.' Neither is wrong, but the dissonance creates questions. Not just about Meghan's role but about the heart and soul of the brand.' Earlier this month Meghan said she had decided to 'just pause' restocking her brand, saying she wanted to wait until it is 'completely stable and we have everything we need'. She also spoke of the difficulties of building her firm and 'how many tears' she has shed behind the scenes on a bonus episode of her Confessions of a Female Founder podcast featuring Beyonce's mother Tina Knowles. Meghan had suggested the 'scarcity mentality at the beginning might be a hook for people', comparing it to 'a sneaker drop'. But she feared it might be 'annoying' for customers, adding: 'I don't want you to eat that jam once every six months. I want that to be on your shelf all the time.' Meghan said: 'So for me at the moment, with As Ever, it was great. We planned for a year we get and then everything sells out in 45 minutes. 'Yes, amazing, great news. Then what do you do? And then you say 'Ok, we planned as best as we could. Are we going to replenish and sell out again in an hour? Or is that annoying as a customer? 'I'm looking at it saying 'Just pause. That happened. Let's wait until we are completely stable and we have everything we need'.' She added how people 'see all the flashy stuff and they see the product. But that end game… those behind the scenes moments, how many tears I've shed'. Meanwhile, this week the Duchess denied that her personal Instagram account, where she shares behind the scenes footage of family life, is a tool to promote her business. Meghan said returning to social media at the start of the year was 'a great way to get my voice back', and she uses it for 'authentic' sharing such as her twerking video. She added: 'It's my space and my channel for joy.' The former Suits actress went back on Instagram in January, first with footage of her running around a beach and writing 2025 in the sand, and then a montage from her Netflix show With Love, Meghan. The Duchess has since made numerous posts about As Ever, mentioning her As Ever Instagram account, but has also released photos and videos of the Sussexes' life with their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. On Lili's fourth birthday last week, Meghan shared footage of herself twerking in a labour room while heavily pregnant with her daughter. On the Aspire with Emma Grede podcast, entrepreneur Grede asked Meghan about her return to social media, saying: 'Are you thinking about it in the way that so many of us do as also a business tool?' Meghan replied: 'Not for my personal account, no.' Grede challenged her, asking: 'Really?' Meghan said: 'For my personal account? …No.' Grede told her: 'Well that's the one we're all following.' Meghan replied and laughed: 'Well good…as long as you're following As Ever too. No, I think for me it was great way to get my voice back… It's my space and my channel for joy – that is the intention of my handle.' Meghan's personal account @Meghan has 3.8 million followers. Her @aseverofficial account has 847,000 followers, and is linked into her @Meghan bio, as is her ShopMy collection.
