Why ether ETF inflows have come roaring back from the dead
Ether ETFs have finally come to life this year after some started to fear they may be becoming zombie funds. Collectively, the funds tracking the price of spot ether are on pace for their sixth consecutive week of inflows and eight positive week in the last nine, according to SoSoValue. The second largest cryptocurrency has become more attractive to institutions in recent weeks largely due to recent regulatory momentum in the U.S. around stablecoins – many of which run on the Ethereum network – the successful IPO of Circle, the issuer of the second-largest stablecoin; and new leadership at the Ethereum Foundation. "What we're seeing is institutional recalibration," said Ben Kurland, CEO at crypto charting and research platform DYOR. "After the initial ETH ETF approval fizzled without a price pop, smart money started quietly building positions. They're betting not on price momentum but on positioning ahead of utility unlocks like staking access, options listings, and eventually inflows from retirement platforms." The first year of ether ETFs, which launched in July 2024, has been characterized by weak demand. While the funds have had spikes in inflows, they've trailed far behind bitcoin ETFs in both inflows and investor attention – amassing about $3.9 billion in net inflows since listing versus bitcoin ETFs' $36 billion in their first year of trading. "With increasing acceptance of crypto on Wall Street, especially now as a means for payments and remittances, investors are being drawn to ETH ETFs," said Chris Rhine, head of liquid active strategies at Galaxy Digital. Additionally, he added, the CME basis on ether – or the price difference between ether futures and the spot price – is higher than that of bitcoin, giving arbitrageurs an opportunity to profit by going long on ether ETFs while shorting futures (a common trading strategy) and contributing to the uptrend in ether ETF inflows. Despite the uptrend in inflows, the price of ether itself is negative for this month and flat over the past month. For the year, it's down 25% as it's been suffering from an identity crisis fueled by uncertainty about Ethereum's value proposition, weaker revenue since its last big technical upgrade and increasing competition from Solana. Market volatility driven by geopolitical uncertainty this year has not helped. In March, Standard Chartered slashed its ether price target by more than half. However, the firm also said the coin could still see a turnaround this year. Since last week's big spike in inflows, they've "slowed but stayed net positive, suggesting conviction, not hype," Kurland said. "The market looks like a heart monitor, but the buyers are treating it like a long-term infrastructure bet."

On the other hand, many altcoins are struggling. For example, the market-defining oracle coin Chainlink (CRYPTO: LINK) is down by 37% in 2025. Is Chainlink fading out for good, or could this be a great time to buy the falling coin? Let's take a look. Rising Bitcoin prices don't always translate into strong returns from other cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin's dominance of the total crypto market has been surging since November 2022, rising from 38% to 64% in that 30-month period. Chainlink had a total market value of $3.8 billion on November 30, 2022. That was about 0.44% of the crypto market as a whole. The coin price is up by 78% since then, far behind Bitcoin's 537% price jump. Chainlink's footprint on the crypto market has shrunk to 0.26%. So Chainlink has underperformed Bitcoin in recent years -- but why? First and foremost, Bitcoin is becoming a fairly standard asset nowadays. It's a limited-inflation value carrier, comparable to gold in many ways. Its value is based on computing time and electric bills rather than physical gold bars, but the idea of a limited-supply accounting asset is easily understood. People are doing some very traditional things with Bitcoin now, like building corporate cash reserves and launching exchange-traded funds based on Bitcoin prices. Chainlink is a different beast. It's harder to grasp how this coin creates value -- and value storage isn't its main purpose. As an oracle coin, Chainlink's job is to collect and distribute data throughout the cryptocurrency ecosystem. You can use it to read the current market prices of various cryptocurrencies, stocks, and other assets. Chainlink can also track weather data, real estate prices, flight times, and more. This data comes in handy for smart contracts, automating things in the blockchain-based cryptocurrency world. With Chainlink's real-world data feeds, you can set up Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) smart contracts to take action. Like, sell this non-fungible token when its price reaches $100, or transfer some Bitcoin to an emergency fund when the wind speed in Tampa hits 80 mph. These are simple examples, and developers can take more sophisticated actions. The smart contracts can be written for Ethereum or Solana (CRYPTO: SOL) or Avalanche (CRYPTO: AVAX), just to name a few popular platforms. And the common denominator is Chainlink. Other oracles exist, but none come close to Chainlink's market reach. So if you want to make a Web3 app, or a decentralized finance tool, or some other program that depends on smart contracts, you pretty much have to rely on Chainlink's data. And every data request generates a tiny fee, which is distributed to coin holders who support data security by staking their Chainlink coins. Chainlink's value creation makes sense when you think about it, but it's not as simple or obvious as the Bitcoin model. That's why Chainlink's price chart has lagged behind Bitcoin's recently -- setting patient investors up for greater long-term gains. This oracle coin won't be misunderstood and underestimated forever. Long story short, a Chainlink investment is a bet on smart contracts and the apps you can build around them. From tokenized real-world assets to blockchain-based digital wallets, Chainlink will build plenty of usage-based value as these next-generation financial management ideas go mainstream. As such, I see a bright long-term future for Chainlink and its early investors. None of the catalysts I listed above have gained much traction yet, and Chainlink is waiting for the first killer app. It will probably never be a trillion-dollar asset, like Bitcoin is today, but there's plenty of room for wealth-building growth with much lower market caps. 3 Reasons Cardano's New Bitcoin Treasury Plan May Backfire
Cardano might swap some of its native token for Bitcoin. That has a few bearish implications about what the chain's management thinks. It's also questionable whether it would accomplish the goals management described. 10 stocks we like better than Cardano › Cardano (CRYPTO: ADA) founder Charles Hoskinson wants to convert roughly $100 million of the cryptocurrency, or about 5% to 10% of the chain's treasury of 1.7 billion tokens, into Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC), plus a basket of Cardano-native stablecoins. The objective would be to shore up the chain's liquidity for its decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, and prove that Cardano can compete with its faster-growing rivals. The proposal sounds bold, but so far investors seem to be judging the move as bearish; the coin slid 6% on the news, capping off its fall of 35% this year so far. Here's why the market's skepticism is warranted, and why the plan could end up hurting the chain rather than helping it. Crypto treasuries exist to fund future development and buffer shocks. It's normal for chains to retain some coins that are issued by their competitors, and it's also normal for chains to retain some Bitcoin. In fact, it's necessary for DeFi projects to be able to access on-chain liquidity denominated in external tokens. The issue is that this late in the game, swapping a large cache of native tokens for an external asset is a message about management's confidence, or the lack of it, in Cardano's long-run value. Liquidity wasn't a major constraint for DeFi on the chain leading up to this discussion. So there's an implication by management that the chain's total value might actually grow faster if it holds less of its native token. Hoskinson argues the trade would be gradual and conducted over the counter to avoid slamming the price of Cardano. But the idea of diversifying suggests leadership fears continued dilution or sluggish demand for its own coin. That signal already rattled holders. If management won't keep its war chest in Cardano, why should outside investors keep it in their portfolios? Cardano's DeFi footprint is relatively small today. Its total value locked (TVL) was about $260 million as of June 17, with only $31 million of on-chain stablecoins. With the swap, Hoskinson hopes to lift the stablecoin-to-TVL ratio from roughly 10% to between 33% and 40%. That calculation doesn't really amount to much, though. Even if every dollar of the $100 million allocation landed inside Cardano applications, the chain's TVL would climb to about $260 million. That's still less than 1.5% of its nemesis Solana, which hosts $8.3 billion in TVL and $10.8 billion in stablecoins. The size of the gap would hardly budge, yet a large volume of Cardano would need to be sold to fund the experiment. And that sale pressure could easily eclipse the incremental liquidity benefit. The point of deeper liquidity is to attract borrowers, investors, and developers to the chain. Cardano's main obstacle is that few of those players are waiting on the sidelines right now. Its flagship decentralized exchange (DEX), Minswap, handles about $2.4 million in daily volume. The chain's biggest dollar-backed stablecoin has volume of a mere $50,000 a day. Without a reason for users to stick around, or compelling yields to offer to those who park their capital on the chain, new Bitcoin collateral risks becoming even more idle capital. And that would make the swap have a poor return for the chain, to say the least. Meanwhile, competitors keep raising the bar. Solana's DeFi user base is expanding, and Ethereum keeps slashing its gas (user) fees. Investors weighing where to deploy fresh capital will compare those ecosystems to Cardano's, and the comparison is not a favorable one for Cardano's holders. Cardano's community prides itself on deliberate engineering, but capital markets reward traction more than talk. A treasury diversification that scratches the surface of liquidity while advertising doubt about the coin's upside could end up a self-inflicted wound. Investors should monitor the situation, and perhaps consider selling the asset before it loses more value.
