Saudi Arabia has decided to partially roll back its decades-long ban on alcohol starting in 2026. This is a major cultural revolution as the kingdom lays the groundwork to receive global tourists for the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
The change, as part of the overall Vision 2030 initiative, will permit the sale of alcohol in upscale places such as hotels, restaurants, and cafes, breaking a 73-year ban in one of the world's most religiously conservative countries.

What Saudi Arabia's 2034 World Cup Will Look Like
In a groundbreaking policy move, the Saudi Arabian government officially agreed to allow licensed luxury venues to serve alcohol for the first time from 2026. Strictly regulated and restricted to certain domains such as upscale hotels, luxury resorts, and global tourism hubs like Neom, Sindalah Island, and the Red Sea Project, the move comes as a part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030 reform agenda, which aims to diversify its economy, attract international investment, and promote the tourism value of the country for mega events such as Expo 2030 and the FIFA World Cup 2034.
Allowed drinks under the new law will be beer, wine, and cider, while spirits and hard liquor will not be allowed. Notably, drinking alcohol will still be prohibited in private premises, public spaces, and unlicensed premises, and home brewing will still be illegal.
To protect cultural norms, only licensed premises staffed by trained personnel will be permitted to sell alcohol. Measures in place for supervision will be systems of real-time reporting, certification of personnel, and severe punishment for violations.
The transformation, say officials, is motivated by realistic economic aims: to attract more foreign tourists, encourage foreign investment, and provide jobs in the hospitality and service industries. A number of international hotel companies that have already established themselves in the kingdom are already making their preparations for the rollout, predicting increased room occupancy and wider international appeal.

Even with loosened controls, Saudi officials emphasized that any infractions—including unauthorized use, resale, or transport — will have legal repercussions, reaffirming their dedication to upholding traditional values in the face of economic modernization. Though alcohol will still be restricted and under tight control, the policy change indicates the kingdom wishes to embrace international standards before hosting some of the world's largest events—all while preserving its cultural heritage.

Ex-ENG Captain Praises Bumrah, Says 'He Would Get Me Out 10 Times Out Of 10'

Last Updated: Nasser Hussain has reserved big praise for star Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who is leading the bowling attack for Shubman Gill & Co. in the Leeds Test against England. Former England men's cricket team captain Nasser Hussain has reserved big praise for Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah. According to Hussain, who has donned the hat of an expert and commentator after retirement from professional cricket, Bumrah is so good that if he had faced him then, he would have lost his wicket 10 times out of 10 against him. 'I would have had an absolute nightmare. Anyone that created that angle like he does would get me out for fun. He would get me out 10 times out of 10 in a five-match series. He is just brilliant, and I wasn't," Nasser said in a video shared by Sky Sports Cricket when asked, 'How would Nasser Hussain play Jasprit Bumrah?" — Sky Sports Cricket (@SkyCricket) June 22, 2025 Nasser was one of the greatest English batters of all time. The Chennai-born cricketer played 96 Tests and 88 ODIs for Three Lions from October 1989 to May 2004 and scored over 8000 runs. He also served as England's captain in both the Test and ODI formats of the game. Bumrah's career in numbers Bumrah made his international debut for India against Australia during an ODI match played in Sydney in January 2016. Since then he has featured in 45 Tests, 89 ODIs, and 70 T20Is and has more than 400 wickets to his name. Bumrah played a big role in India's T20 World Cup title win last year, and for his super show with the ball, he won the Player of the Tournament award as well. He picked up 32 wickets for India in the 2024-25 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and bagged the ICC Cricketer and ICC Test Cricketer of the Year awards in 2024. Bumrah, who is the world's No. 1 Test bowler, is leading India's bowling attack in the ongoing first Test against England in Leeds, and on Sunday, June 22, he picked up a five-wicket haul. Bumrah finished England's first innings with figures of 4 for 83 in 24.4 overs. The five-wicket haul in the first innings helped him break multiple bowling records. He became the first Asian bowler to take 150 Test wickets in SENA countries and also equalled Kapil Dev's record of 12 five-wicket hauls for India in Tests played away from home. Bumrah now has 11 five-wicket hauls to his name in WTC, which is the joint-most by a bowler, and he also became the first Indian to take three five-wicket hauls in England. IND vs ENG, 1st Test Day 3 Highlights: Jasprit Bumrah bags five, Harry Brook misses ton, India ahead at Headingley

Jasprit Bumrah (Getty Images) NEW DELHI: Despite a valiant effort from Jasprit Bumrah and a fluent start by KL Rahul, India endured another patchy day in the field as England posted 465 in their first innings to nearly wipe out India's advantage on Day 3 of the first Test at Headingley on Sunday. India ended the day at 90/2, leading by 96 runs, with KL Rahul (47)* and Shubman Gill (6)* unbeaten at stumps. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! DROPPED CATCHES HURT INDIA India were let down by poor fielding once again, dropping five catches in the innings. The most glaring was when Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped Harry Brook for the third time in the match — on 82 — off Bumrah's bowling. Earlier, Brook was dropped by Rishabh Pant on 46, and also survived after being bowled off a Bumrah no-ball on Day 2. He eventually fell for 99, pulling a short ball from Prasidh Krishna to Shardul Thakur at fine leg. BROOK LEADS ENGLAND'S COUNTERATTACK Resuming at 209/3, England rode on Harry Brook's aggressive 99 and Chris Woakes' quickfire 38 to erase India's lead. Brook was the standout with fearless strokeplay, launching even Bumrah for sixes over extra cover. England scored 138 runs in 23.4 overs in the extended afternoon session, regularly finding boundaries off an inconsistent Indian pace attack. BUMRAH'S BRILLIANCE Jasprit Bumrah was once again India's saving grace. He claimed 5/83 in 24.4 overs, his 14th five-wicket haul in Tests and 10th in SENA countries, a milestone unmatched by any other Indian pacer. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo His spell ended England's innings at 465, giving India a slender six-run first-innings lead. While Bumrah shone, the rest of India's pace unit struggled. Prasidh Krishna picked up two wickets, including Brook and Jamie Smith, but conceded 128 runs in 20 overs, lacking variation and control. Shardul Thakur was barely used, and Ravindra Jadeja was curiously brought in late, despite extracting turn. KL RAHUL IMPRESSES Chasing quick runs before stumps, India lost Yashasvi Jaiswal (4) early to Brydon Carse, and Sai Sudharsan (30) again fell to Ben Stokes, who dismissed him twice in the match. Sitanshu Kotak press conference: Big revelation on Shubman Gill But KL Rahul looked composed and elegant, striking seven boundaries, most through classic drives, as he remained unbeaten on 47 before rain stopped play. Throughout the innings, Indian players were visibly unhappy with the condition of the worn-out Dukes ball, and frequently appealed to the umpires for a change. After repeated refusals, the ball was eventually changed in the 75th over, just before the second new ball became available. India will hope for a solid batting effort on Day 4 to set up the match, while England will look to capitalise on any slip-ups. With conditions still favouring seam movement, the match is finely balanced heading into a potentially pivotal fourth day. 'It won't be easy': Sourav Ganguly lays out path for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to play in 2027 ODI World Cup

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's Test retirements have sparked debate over their 2027 ODI World Cup hopes. Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly believes it won't be easy for the legends and outlined what they must do to stay in contention. read more Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma shocked the world recently by announcing their retirements from Test cricket. They had already stepped down from T20 cricket last year after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup. Their recent decisions to retire from red-ball cricket have raised a big question around their availability to play in the 2027 ODI World Cup. Both Kohli and Rohit are modern-day legends, and fans would love to see them lift the ODI World Cup trophy before they say goodbye to international cricket. The 2027 Cricket World Cup is still more than two years away and by then, Kohli will be 39 and Rohit will turn 40. There are concerns regarding their fitness and match-readiness at that age. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD However, since they won't be playing Tests and T20s anymore, some believe that they can now fully focus on ODIs and prepare themselves just for the 50-over format. That could actually work in their favour, as they will have fewer matches to worry about and can manage their bodies better. Ganguly on Kohli-Rohit's ODI future But former India captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has a different view. Ganguly believes that if Kohli and Rohit are serious about playing the 2027 ODI World Cup, they will have to stay active in the format for the next two years. 'It won't be easy. 15 games a year. I've got no advice. I think they know the game as much as I do. And they will take a call. But all of us must understand that just like everyone, the game will go away from them and they will go away from the game,' Ganguly told PTI in an interview. India have at least 27 ODI matches scheduled between now and the next World Cup. Ganguly feels that Kohli and Rohit must stay committed to playing most, if not all, of these matches if they really want to be part of the World Cup squad. Both Rohit and Kohli have already had legendary careers. They recently won the ICC Champions Trophy and the T20 World Cup. They qualified for the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup without losing a single game, but lost to Australia in the summit clash. Note, Rohit is still the captain of the Indian ODI team.
