Tencent bets its China WeChat and gaming expertise will help it win cloud business in Europe
Tencent has spent years evolving into a gaming and social media giant in China and in the process, has built up its cloud computing capabilities.
The technology firm is now looking to bring that expertise to Europe as it ramps up expansion of its cloud business overseas, Dowson Tong, CEO of Tencent's cloud group told CNBC.
"We have strengths and competence in very specific technology areas, as well as industry verticals," Tong said in an interview last week. "These are are very unique technology capabilities that have been developed over many years [and] started from our products in China."
"So we intend to bring a lot of this technology expertise to Europe. We're talking to a lot of interested potential customers."
Tencent's European push will pitch it against U.S. hyperscalers Amazon, Microsoft and Alphabet-owned Google, which collectively make up 70% share of Europe's cloud market.
But the Chinese firm is hoping to focus on specific areas where it has built up capabilities to differentiate from rivals.
Tong said these include cloud technologies for areas like optimizing video streaming, ensuring a smooth gaming experience, and developing and hosting so-called "super apps" like WeChat — China's biggest messaging service. WeChat is often seen as the pioneer of super apps, a term that refers to an application with multiple functions, such as messaging and payments.
Tong gave an example of Tencent's cloud computing work with French telecommunications firm Orange in supporting the company's Max it app in Africa. In the area of gaming, Tencent's cloud technology can improve "latency," which is a technical term for the lag between a player's actions and what happens on screen, Tong said.
The Chinese company is also betting on European companies opting for multiple cloud providers for services, instead of relying on one or two of the big players.
"I would say that's actually a ... deliberate strategy of ours to make the customers feel more comfortable using our technology, especially in a multi-cloud environment," he said, adding that customers want to be able to interoperate.
Cloud computing companies have put an increased focus on selling artificial intelligence tools as a way to boost revenue and differentiate their offerings from rivals.
Tencent has built up its own artificial intelligence foundational model in China called Hunyuan. But it also uses some models created by Chinese firm DeepSeek in its products.
Tong said Tencent would take a similar approach in Europe when it comes to AI, potentially offering products built on European models.
"Our focus would be providing tools that would work with different foundation models and ultimately, it's the customer's decision which model works best for them," Tong told CNBC.
"So I think at the end of the day, we would always go to our customers, find the problems they wanted addressed, provide them tools so that they can accomplish what they need, and realise the cost efficiency that we can offer."

Prime Minister Carney in Brussels today for EU-Canada summit
BRUSSELS - Prime Minister Mark Carney is in Belgium today, where he visited a military cemetery before meeting with European Union leaders at an EU-Canada summit. Carney said on social media Sunday that he was in Brussels to launch 'a new era of partnership' between Canada and the European Union for the benefit of workers, businesses and security 'on both sides of the Atlantic.' Carney started the day with a visit to the Antwerp Schoonselhof Military Cemetery where 348 Canadian soldiers are buried. Later, he is expected to meet with Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Carney posted on social media early on Monday that he spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump overnight, noting the conversation addressed the need to de-escalate the conflict in the Middle East, their shared commitment of a stronger NATO and progress in ongoing trade talks between Canada and the United States. At the EU-Canada summit, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand and Defence Minister David McGuinty are expected to sign a security and defence agreement with the European bloc in what one European official described last week as one of the most ambitious deals the continent's powers have ever signed with a third country. The security and defence agreement aims to open the door to Canada's participation in the joint purchase of weapons with European countries. It will also lead to Canada's participation in the ReArm Europe initiative, allowing Canada to access a 150-billion-euro program for defence procurement, called Security Action for Europe. Canada will need to sign a second agreement with the European Commission before it can take part in the program. A government official briefing reporters on the trip said the partnership is expected to make procurement easier and more affordable, while also allowing Canada to diversify the sources of equipment. At the EU-Canada summit, leaders are also expected to issue a joint statement to underscore a willingness for continued pressure on Russia to end its war on Ukraine, including through further sanctions, and call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. The joint statement is also expected to touch on climate change, trade and digital and tech policy. Leaders at the EU-Canada summit are also slated to discuss global trade and commit to working towards full ratification and implementation of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, the Canada-Europe free trade deal known as CETA. The pact took effect provisionally in 2017, and most of its contents now apply. But all EU countries need to approve CETA before it can take full effect, with 10 members still left to ratify the deal. Carney, Costa and von der Leyen are scheduled to hold a joint press conference in the evening. On Tuesday, Carney travels to The Hague for the NATO summit. The international meetings come as Canada looks to reduce its defence procurement reliance on the United States due to strained relations over tariffs and U.S. President Donald Trump's repeated talk about Canada becoming a U.S. state. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 23, 2025.

Amazon Launches At-Home Diagnostic Services in India
The diagnostic platform offers more than 1,000 tests and operates with a network of seven laboratories. Sample collection is available at home within 60 minutes, and reports for routine tests are delivered digitally in as little as six hours. You're reading Entrepreneur India, an international franchise of Entrepreneur Media. Amazon India has introduced Amazon Diagnostics, its latest healthcare service offering, in collaboration with accredited testing provider Orange Health Labs. The service, now live in six major cities such as Bengaluru, Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Mumbai, and Hyderabad, marks Amazon's continued expansion into India's healthtech sector. The diagnostic platform offers more than 1,000 tests and operates with a network of seven laboratories. Sample collection is available at home within 60 minutes, and reports for routine tests are delivered digitally in as little as six hours, as reported by Financial Express. The initiative is a key component in Amazon's broader effort to create a comprehensive digital healthcare ecosystem in India, integrating diagnostics with its existing pharmacy and teleconsultation services. Jayaramakrishnan Balasubramanian, category leader for Amazon Medical, described the diagnostics launch as the "third aspect" of Amazon's health strategy in India. "We launched the Pharmacy business about two and a half years ago, and it has grown very quickly. It's one of the fastest-growing segments for Amazon in India," he said. "Recently, we launched Amazon Clinic, which provides access to virtual doctor consultations, and now we are introducing the third aspect, Amazon Diagnostics, which completes our healthcare offering." Balasubramanian emphasized that the focus will be on user experience rather than price wars. "We will maintain price parity and focus on customer experience rather than compete purely on price," he said. Customers will be able to consult a doctor, book tests, and order medications all through the Amazon app. "We are launching this service first in India, as a unique Amazon initiative for this region," he added. Amazon Clinic, which launched six months ago, has already doubled its user base, especially in categories like pediatric and veterinary consultations. In India, the service is entirely online and covers 100 different conditions with over 10 medical specialities. The platform has reportedly been used for private consultations on sexual and mental health, areas where discretion is often a barrier to access. According to the company, the Amazon Pharmacy arm, which delivers prescription medications and healthcare essentials, is now accessible across all serviceable PIN codes in the country. With around 40 to 50 doctors onboarded for Amazon Clinic, the company indicated that it plans to expand the team in line with user demand.
