A Revved Up Chicago Gourmet Returns in 2025 With a NASCAR Dinner
As Chicago's street festivals struggle, Chicago Gourmet is swinging for the fences in 2025 and leaning into the city's passion for sports. Organizers have announced a battery of events, including a dinner on the NASCAR Chicago Street Course with food from the chefs behind Bar Siena, Daisies, and Piccolo Sogno.
Chicago Gourmet takes place annually each summer, with many of the city's best chefs and the country's most popular wine producers gathering at the Grand Cru in Millennium Park. Over the years, the event series has transformed. COVID forced it to reduce its footprint at the park while focusing more on ancillary events such as the Hamburger Hop, which crowns the city's best burger. Those tickets will go on sale in July.
This year, the fest's theme, Step Up to the Plate, puts sports front and center, attempting to inject some excitement for fans. Lord knows, even with Pete-Crow Armstrong, that Chicago sports teams haven't been inspiring lately.
While the Grand Cru will still take place on Saturday, September 27, at the Harris Bank Rooftop near Millennium Park, there are new events such as the aforementioned NASCAR dinner, which will take place on Wednesday, July 2, ahead of the third annual Chicago Street Race on Sunday, July 5. Diners will eat a five-course meal at the start/finish line in what organizers bill as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. But what if it's a success? We'll see how 2025 goes. Tickets, $250, are already for sale online. The chef lineup consists of Fabio Viviani (Siena Tavern, Bar Siena, Bombobar), Joe Frillman and Leigh Omilinsky (Daisies), Tony Priolo (Piccolo Sogno), and Steve Maak (Levy Restaurants).
Then, on Friday, July 25, a lineup of chefs will be at the ballpark for Game Day Gourmet at the Crosstown Classic in concert with the Cubs' and White Sox's interleague games in July at Rate Field on the South Side. It's a hot dog competition to see whose upscale spin on a wiener will reign supreme. Chefs will be tasked with zhuzhing special Duck Dogs, a duck fat-infused frank made famous by the Duck Inn. Participating chefs include Duck Inn's own Kevin Hickey, Frontier and Ina Mae's Package Goods' Brian Jupiter, and Mirra's Rishi Kumar and Zubair Mohajir. Win or lose, rain or shine, folks who shell out the $250 per ticket will get to sample the specialty sausages from a suite overlooking the game. Tickets are available for purchase online.
Finally, Jackie Robinson may not have strong ties to Chicago, but Major League Baseball's first Black player is celebrated around the country. His No. 42 is retired by all teams, and all players wear the number during MLB's annual Jackie Robinson Day. James Beard Award-winning chefs Erick Williams and Damarr Brown of Virtue will host a tribute dinner to Robinson on Wednesday, August 20. A cocktail reception will precede a three-course dinner. Marqueal Jordan & The Wachezaji will provide the music. Tickets cost $225 per person and are available online. Proceeds benefit Virtue Leadership Development and the IRA Educational Foundation.

Babyshambles guitarist Patrick Walden dies aged 46
Former Babyshambles star Patrick Walden has died aged 46. The guitarist - who starred in the British rock band alongside Pete Doherty, Drew McConnell, Mick Whitnall and Adam Ficek - has passed away, with the news being announced via Babyshambles' official Facebook page. A statement read: "It is with deep regret and sadness that we share the news of Patrick Walden's death. "We feel very fortunate to have known, loved and worked with him and we kindly ask for respect and privacy during these difficult times. "Peter, Drew, Mik, Adam. (sic)" Patrick performed in a variety of bands - including Fluid, the Six Cold Thousand, and The White Sport - before he joined Babyshambles back in 2003. The rock group - who were formed by Pete during a hiatus from the Libertines - released three albums together, including Down in Albion in 2005, Shotter's Nation in 2007 and Sequel to the Prequel in 2013. The Libertines re-formed in 2014, but Babyshambles continued to perform sporadic shows and festivals throughout that year. In 2024, Pete revealed that a Babyshambles reunion was in the works. The 46-year-old musician admitted that the band were hoping to reunite to mark the 20th anniversary of their debut album. Pete - who was well-known for his turbulent personal life during his time in Babyshambles - told NME at the time: "It is on the cards. We will get back together and get in a room with the instruments and play through the old songs, then get on stage and do it. "But it's the who and the when that needs to be worked out. I think we'll just keep that one on the horizon and deal with that one next year." Meanwhile, Patrick also worked as a live guitarist and as a session musician for a number of well-known artists, including James Blunt and Whitey.

INDYCAR Winning nine of the 10 races since the NTT INDYCAR SERIES returned to Road America in 2016, Chip Ganassi Racing and Team Penske are the organizations to beat. Alexander Rossi's win for Andretti Global in 2019 is the lone exception. CGR boasts five wins in that span, including four victories in the last six tries. Also, CGR driver Alex Palou is 3-for-3 on natural terrain road courses this season with victories at The Thermal Club, Barber Motorsports Park and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course. Team Penske has four wins at Road America since 2016, including a sweep of the podium last season with Will Power, Josef Newgarden and Scott McLaughlin finishing first, second and third, respectively. Over his last 16 natural road course starts, McLaughlin has five podiums, six top-five finishes and 11 top 10's. Alex Palou (No. 10 Solo Cup Chip Ganassi Racing Honda) Palou is undefeated on natural road courses this season and has a pair of wins in his last four Road America starts. He finished fourth last year. Will Power (No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet) Power had four top-five finishes at Road America, including a 2016 win and a pair of runner-up results, in a five-year span. He's had two over the last five, including a 2024 victory. Power finished sixth at The Thermal Club this spring, fifth at Barber Motorsports Park and third on the IMS road course. Sleepers Christian Lundgaard (No. 7 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet) In three Road America starts, Lundgaard finished 10th in 2022, seventh in 2023 and 11th last year. In his first season driving with Arrow McLaren, Lundgaard has been strong on natural road courses by finishing third at The Thermal Club, second at Barber Motorsports Park and 16th on the IMS road course. Colton Herta (No. 26 Gainbridge Honda) The Andretti Global driver led 33 laps from the pole in 2023 at Road America. If not for the decision to pit a lap too soon, Herta was well on his way to a victory. Instead, he finished second. Herta has seven top-eight finishes in as many Road America starts, including five of the last six ending in the top five. Also, since the start of last season, Herta has eight top-eight finishes in nine natural road course starts. The outlier was a 25th-place finish in this year's Sonsio Grand Prix on the IMS road course. Kyle Kirkwood (No. 27 Siemens Honda) Can he score the season hat trick of wins on a street circuit, oval and road course? Kirkwood has improved all three opportunities at Road America, going from 20th as a rookie for AJ Foyt Racing in 2022, to ninth and fifth, respectively, the last two seasons with Andretti Global. Kirkwood also finished eighth in The Thermal Club this season, 11th at Barber and eighth on the IMS road course, leading to nine consecutive top-11 finishes on natural road courses. Marcus Ericsson (No. 28 Fresh Connect Central Honda) Ericsson boasts six consecutive top-10 finishes at Road America, including results of fourth, sixth, second, sixth and ninth, respectively, in his last five starts in Wisconsin. Ericsson has four top-10 finishes in his last seven natural road course starts overall. Marcus Armstrong (No. 66 SiriusXM/Root Insurance Honda) Road America was the site of Armstrong's breakout performance in 2023. He had a top-five car, leading five laps, before going off track late in the race. He qualified third last year, but a mechanical failure relegated him to 26th. Armstrong was seventh at The Thermal Club, 17th at Barber and seventh on the IMS road course. He also has three top-10 finishes in the last four races this season. recommended
