England's World Cup conquerers dumped out as German pair dismantled after mega ticket rush

Interest rocketed in the German duo's blistering triumph over Luke Humphries and Luke Littler in the last 16 but the dreams were short-lived
Glory hunting German darts fans had their dreams crushed by the brilliance of Northern Irish duo Josh Rock and Daryl Gurney.
Home duo Martin Schindler and Ricardo Pietreczko's sensational wins over England and Australia had lifted belief the hosts could claim a famous first victory in the World Cup of Darts.

Interest rocketed in the German duo's outstanding work and blistering triumph over Luke Humphries and Luke Littler in the last 16.

Going onto their next match, the home team battled back from the brink of defeat to sink the Aussies and further inspire belief it could be their time.
As soon as Schindler landed the winning shot against the Down Under duo of Damon Heta and Simon Whitlock on Sunday afternoon, eager punters snapped up tickets to go to the arena and join those who had already booked their spots in Frankfurt hoping to catch the magical moment.
Sky TV commentator Dan Dawson revealed: 'Since Germany hit the winning double this afternoon against Australia, more than 3,000 tickets sold for tonight, another 10 per cent were sold in the time since the quarter-final.
"People have been buying tickets thinking this is going to happen. They might have changed their mind in a short space of time.'
However, their dreams were short-lived as Gurney and Rock dismantled the Germans and buried their chances of title glory.
The Irish pair stormed into a 5-0 lead to make the chances of success disappear and completed an 8-1 triumph to book a spot in the Final.

It was a savage blow to the home supporters who bought their tickets before and after the last-eight win for Schindler and Pietreczko, but it was joy for the victors.
Gurney was sporting towards the punters afterwards and said: 'I know it didn't go the way of Germany, but the atmosphere was absolutely incredible. I'd just like to applaud everybody here in Frankfurt. They were super and so respectful. I am so pleased to be in the Final.'
Gurney played down the move through and added: ' The only thing we have done is qualify for a Final. We have won nothing yet. We have won exactly the same as if you were playing in the first round. We will try our damnedest in the Final. You can't win a pairs competition without playing as pairs.
"He might do all the scoring and I might do all the finishing and if we can do it in the Final, we will give ourselves a good chance. But this man has been phenomenal. I'm privileged to play alongside him and thanks to Josh and the crowd.'
Rock said: 'As I keep saying, playing for your country is a passion and we are here as a team, that's the main thing.'

Club World Cup predictions: Saturday group-stage tips and odds

Our expert has tips for all four of Saturday's Club World Cup matches, including Mamelodi Sundowns versus Bundesliga big guns Borussia Dortmund in Cincinnati. Already signed up to BoyleSports? Mamelodi Sundowns vs Borussia Dortmund (Cincinnati, 5pm BST) The German outfit underwhelmed against an ageing Fluminense defence in their Club World Cup opener, but they should get their first win on the board against Mamelodi Sundowns in Cincinnati. The South African side won their first game of the competition 1-0 against the South Korean Ulsan HD to go top of Group F – but Dortmund, who finished last season with six straight wins, will represent a significant step-up in quality. Mamelodi could have chances on the break given that Dortmund play with such a high line. With their Bundesliga fixtures averaging 3.59 goals per game last term, a win for Die Schwarzgelben and over 2.5 goals is the way to go at 10/11. Inter Milan vs Urawa Red Diamonds (Seattle, 8pm BST) New Inter Milan boss Cristian Chivu made it clear he will not be making any drastic changes at the club after replacing Simone Inzaghi, having used a compact 3-5-2 formation in his side's opening 1-1 draw with Monterrey at the Club World Cup. The Mexicans managed just one shot on target against the Italians, who should be tight and difficult to break down in this tournament, so an Inter Milan win to nil appeals at 20/23 when they take on the Japanese club. Urawa lost 3-1 to the Argentine River Plate in their first match of the tournament, but their only goal came from the penalty spot and they were wasteful with their chances. They have scored just 26 goals in 21 games in the J1 League this season and are unlikely to cause Inter many problems. Fluminense vs Ulsan HD (East Rutherford, New Jersey, 11pm Saturday BST) In their draw with Borussia Dortmund, all the talk surrounding Fluminense was about their goalkeeper and defence with the five starters having a combined age of 178. But they do have some quality in the middle – and with no prolific scorer in attack, their midfielder Matheus Martinelli is worth a bet to net against Ulsan HD at 11/2. He has scored just once in the Brazilian Serie A this season but was lively last time out, managing three shots in his 75 minutes on the pitch. Having also scored in the Copa Sudamericana this season, he is overpriced to find the net in a match that Fluminense should win. River Plate vs Monterrey (Pasadena, 2am Sunday BST) The Argentinians were deserving of their 3-1 win over Urawa Red Diamonds in their first game at the Club World Cup and they can secure their spot in the last 16 with a win over Monterrey. River Plate dominated, and the first goal in particular was an excellent piece of play with Real Madrid-bound starlet Franco Mastantuono opening the game up in midfield. They will be missing striker Sebastian Driussi for the rest of the tournament after he picked up an injury when scoring last time out, but Miguel Borja is a capable deputy. Monterrey were solid but unspectacular against Inter Milan and, despite scoring a header, Sergio Ramos looked unconvincing at times throughout the match. They could only finish seventh in Liga MX's Torneo Clausura last season and River Plate are overpriced at 21/20 to win.

Manchester City open to letting Ilkay Gündogan join Galatasaray

Galatasaray are considering a move for Ilkay Gündogan, with Manchester City open to a transfer for the 34-year-old midfielder. The Turkish club are believed to have inquired about Gündogan's availability in the winter window but City did not want him to leave midway through the season. But with Pep Guardiola having signed Nico González in February and Tijjani Reijnders in this window, with Rodri again fit after a serious knee injury and Mateo Kovacic expected back from an achilles problem in mid-September, game time for Gündogan may be limited. Although the one-year extension on Gündogan's contract was triggered towards the end of last season after he played a certain number of minutes, he may be allowed to leave without a fee. The German, whose parents were born in Turkey, is believed to have a desire to play for Galatasaray, the Super Lig champions. The former Germany international, who turns 35 in October, suggested he still had much to offer. 'There seems to be a trend at the moment in football where people are saying: 'This player is too old,' or: 'Another one cannot run any more.' But we always have had this in football. 'You need experienced players on the pitch. I know that when I was 18 or 19 I was looking up to those experienced players. Just by watching what they did – and how they did it – I learned. It wasn't always necessary for them to say anything. All young players need some experience around them. Sometimes you don't have to work harder but work smarter.'

Adidas extends partnership with Juventus football team by 10 years

German sportswear giant Adidas has renewed its partnership with Italian football team Juventus for another 10 years. The extension carries on the duo's long-standing relationship, which initially began in the 2015/16 season. In a press release, Juventus said the decision to renew was down to the collaborators having a 'strong synergy', as they look to 'reach even bigger objectives in the future'. The companies described the deal as a strategic step that would enable them to 'continue envisioning new collaborations and exploring new horizons together'. Commenting on the news, Sam Handy, general manager of Adidas Football, said that since the club joined, 'we've enjoyed some incredible moments together' which have 'seen the club dominate on-pitch and collect 28 trophies'. 'We look forward to continuing to provide players with cutting-edge sportswear technology and fans with more iconic jerseys and lifestyle apparel until 2037,' Handy continued. The new agreement will take effect from the 2027/28 season, and will thus cover all Juventus teams through to the 2036/37 season. The renewal of the partnership is said to be worth 408 million euros over the additional decade, according to Reuters. In his own statement Maurizio Scanavino, Juventus' CEO, said the duo would 'continue to develop products, create unique experiences, ambitious projects and contaminations that speak the language of new generations'.
