Turks and Caicos offers a progress report at CHTA event

Turks and Caicos is riding a wave of growth in 2025, with strong visitor arrivals, record-breaking cruise numbers and infrastructure developments across the islands. Under the leadership of CEO Paul Pennicook, Experience Turks & Caicos, the destination's new destination marketing and management organization, is steering the tourism sector with an eye on sustainability and global competitiveness.
During a press briefing at the Caribbean Hotels & Tourism Association's annual Caribbean Travel Marketplace earlier this month in Antigua & Barbuda, Pennicook said the country has done very well in the years following the pandemic and that the momentum is continuing into 2025. In the first quarter of 2025, visitor arrivals were up 2.3% over the same period in 2024, with March clocking the highest number of monthly visitors at 76,850 arrivals.
Top source markets remain consistent among the U.S., Canada and the U.K. But there's growing recognition of the Caribbean region as a strong fourth market, with inbound traffic from the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Jamaica.
A cruise surge
While Providenciales continues to dominate in overnight visitor arrivals, Grand Turk is emerging as a cruise powerhouse, according to Pennicook. In Q1 alone, for example, the Grand Turk Cruise Centre received 410,107 cruise passengers, a 54% increase year over year.
"For that first quarter, there were two ships in port daily," said Pennicook. The cruise spike is helping to distribute tourism across the islands and fuel local economies outside of Provo.

With eight airports spread across the country, Turks and Caicos is positioning itself as a multidestination nation, and several facilities are currently undergoing upgrades. In Providenciales, Howard Hamilton Airport is in the midst of a 2025-2026 congestion alleviation project. Phase one included an expanded departure lounge and a new security checkpoint. Phase two will add new international departure gates.
Meanwhile, bids for a new passenger terminal and parallel taxiway are still under evaluation.
"Final bids were received in December 2024," said Pennicook. "The evaluation is still happening." He noted that the February election slowed down the process, and now that the new government is in place, the process can continue.

Other islands are also seeing progress. In March 2025, the South Caicos Airport reopened to international traffic with American Airlines now offering twice-weekly flights from Miami.
"Phase two of that airport's remodeling will complete external work and improve critical infrastructure," Pennicook added.
North Caicos is getting a new terminal, and daily domestic flights now connect it with Provo via Caicos Express.

Israel reports that more than 20,000 tourists are still looking to evacuate
The Israel Ministry of Tourism says it has compiled a list of 22,000 tourists seeking to exit Israel in the wake of the ongoing war between the county and Iran. The ministry has created a digital form for tourists who wish to leave. According to the ministry, there are still 32,000 tourists in the country as of Friday, down from 40,000 at the start of the war earlier this month. The list of those wishing to leave Israel has been forwarded to the proper authorities. "Tourists find themselves in a situation of uncertainty and even distress amid an intense war,' said ministry director Danny Shachar. 'Some are staying here longer than planned, sometimes under difficult financial and personal circumstances.' Global Rescue has been working to evacuate visitors in Israel, with the travel services company's CEO, Dan Richards, encouraging travelers who wish to leave the country to do so soon. Some tourists are choosing to leave through Jordan and Egypt at land border crossings, the tourism ministry reported. Tourism halted Tourism is suspended in the country amid the war, with operators adjusting itineraries as needed. It is not clear when normal tourism operations could resume. The country's tourism has plummeted since militant group Hamas attacked the country on Oct. 7, 2023, starting an ongoing war. Israel's tourism was poised to begin recovery this year; the war that erupted earlier this month presents a setback to those plans. 'As long as the Iran war is going on, there is no tourism in Israel other than those that were here before June 12 and are trying to get out,' said Ronen Paldi, who lives in Tel Aviv and is president of Ya'lla Tours USA, a tour operator that specializes in the Mediterranean and Middle East. The Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv has been closed since June 12 with no reopening date determined. And even when the airport reopens, it is not clear when airlines could resume flights into the country. Delta Air Lines has suspended flights to Israel through at least Aug. 31. Reports say other major airlines have suspended flights, as well. According to Paldi, no tourist sites or attractions have been damaged by Iran's retaliatory missile attacks. ETS Agents, a faith-based operator that offers Holy Land tours, has relocated its Israel tour groups to Jordan and helped travelers return to the U.S. if requested, a spokesperson said. The operator said it is evaluating the conditions in Israel on a daily basis. Until tourism in the country resumes, the company is offering itinerary adjustments, alternative destinations and rescheduling.

The project is now approximately 60 percent complete and is scheduled for completion in 2026. From the outset, the project team developed a Project Sustainability Policy to embed environmental, social, and cultural sustainability into every stage of the project's lifecycle. Te Ara Tupua is using the Infrastructure Sustainability Council (ISC) rating scheme to measure its performance across 25 categories, exceeding standard practice in several key areas. The completed path is projected to increase walking and cycling by approximately 1,700 journeys per day. The shift toward active transport modes will continue to contribute to emission reduction, support public health outcomes, and ease pressure on existing transport networks.
