Kota Kinabalu: The SME Sabah 2025 Conference, set to take place on June 20 here, is expected to attract over 400 participants from across Malaysia, including small and medium enterprise (SME) owners, industry leaders and professionals. Carrying the theme 'Mastering Sustainability & Empowering the Change,' the one-day event aims to deliver practical insights and actionable strategies that will help strengthen SME resilience, competitiveness, and long-term sustainability.
Advertisement President of SME Sabah Dr Deledda Tan, said the conference was curated to address timely challenges and provide a knowledge-sharing platform for entrepreneurs to navigate their business growth journey. 'We understand the struggles of staying relevant and competitive. With this year's theme and topics are aligned with current issues faced by businesses, especially SMEs. 'Our aim is to inspire and empower participants with fresh perspectives, tools and strategies to grow their business and, at the same time, contribute to the overall economic development of the State,' she said during the media preview for the conference, here on Tuesday. She also emphasised that the conference reflects SME Sabah's mission to create a resilient and forward-looking business ecosystem. 'We want SMEs to walk away feeling recharged, with new connections and actionable knowledge,' Dr Deledda said. Organising Chairman Sunny Chai said the event will feature experts covering key topics such as ESG, occupational safety and health, talent development and retention, as well as business transformation. 'Through this conference, we hope to bring in best practices and insights that can be applied directly to participants' businesses. 'The sessions are designed not just to educate, but to motivate entrepreneurs and business owners to take the next step in their transformation journe,' he said. He also said the event will promote active engagement between entrepreneurs, government and private sector stakeholders. 'This is more than a conference. It is a collaborative platform to exchange ideas and co-create meaningful solutions,' he said. The Guest of Honour will be State Minister of Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe. Registration for the SME Sabah 2025 Conference is now open. The participation fee is RM588 per person (normal price) or RM688 per person (claimable under HRD Corp). He said the programme is also eligible for 6.5 CPD hours under the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Sabah branch The day-long programme includes speaker sessions from 8am to 4.30pm, followed by a networking dinner from 7pm to 11pm. Kota Kinabalu: Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Seri Christina Liew suggests that the inaugural Asean Travel Exchange 2025 (ATEX 2025) be made an annual event. She raised the subject to the applause of 500 delegates from 15 countries at the welcome dinner hosted by her at Shangri-La Tanjung Aru (Star) on Thursday. 'An event of this nature is conducive to promoting travel and cultural exchanges, making new connections, building rapport and strengthening existing ties among Asean member countries,' Liew said, while urging the President of the Federation of Asean Travel Associations (FATA), Datuk Tan Kok Liang, who was present, to look into her suggestion. For tourism growth, the Minister, who was the guest of honour, also proposed reciprocal visits among the 10 member countries, saying ASEAN tourism must seize new opportunities and create new adventures. Speaking to the delegates, Liew said: 'If it's your first time in Sabah, I encourage you to explore beyond the venue. From the iconic Mount Kinabalu, a symbol of strength and unity, to vibrant markets and islands full of life, Sabah welcomes you with more than just beauty; it offers unforgettable experiences. 'As Malaysia is the Chairman of Asean this year, ATEX 2025 serves as a reminder that our greatest strength lies in the unity of its people and purpose. It invites us to celebrate the bonds of friendship and shared purpose that bring us together. Penampang Municipal Council first to get green building certification

PENAMPANG: The Penampang Municipal Council (PMC) achieved a significant milestone in its commitment to sustainability and innovation, becoming the first government building in Sabah to receive Green Building certification. Need to shield B40 from SST impact: Umno

Kota Kinabalu: With the full implementation of the Sales and Services Tax (SST) in Sabah just around the corner, the state government must explain what measures are in place to protect low-income groups from the expected rise in living costs. Sabah Umno information chief Datuk Suhaimi Nasir said the absence of clear strategies to assist vulnerable communities is worrying, especially as nearly 40pc of households in the state fall under the B40 category. 'Many depend on informal work or subsistence economies. The SST could erode their already limited purchasing power — particularly in rural areas,' said Suhaimi, who is also Libaran MP, in a statement on Friday (June 20). The tax rollout, set to begin on July 1, was introduced under Budget 2025 by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Under the new framework, a 5pc–10pc sales tax will apply to selected non-essential goods, while the service tax is being extended to sectors such as rental and leasing, construction, finance, private healthcare, private education, and beauty services. Suhaimi noted that Sabah remains one of the states most affected by development imbalance and income inequality — making it all the more urgent for the government to provide strong buffers against the impact of new taxes. While he acknowledged the importance of SST in boosting national revenue, he said it must be balanced with fair and inclusive support policies to prevent it from becoming a burden to ordinary Sabahans. Advertisement He urged the state government to implement targeted subsidies, expand the scope of price controls on essential goods, and provide conditional cash assistance to help households cope. 'The revenue collected must be returned to the people through tangible improvements in rural infrastructure — such as roads, clinics, clean water, and internet coverage — especially in interior areas still left behind,' he said. 'Sabahans deserve transparency on how public funds are spent and how these measures directly benefit their daily lives.
