Reigning Coney Island hot dog champ wants Joey Chestnut back even if it means losing title

New York Post11-06-2025

This news is hard to swallow.
Reigning Nathan's hot dog-eating champ Patrick Bertoletti fears he may no longer be the top dog amid rumors that notorious eater Joey Chestnut might be back for the annual Coney Island contest.
'Joey is the best hot dog eater ever, so to say I have a chance to win — I guess you can say it, but I don't know. It's difficult to beat him. He's the best for a reason,' Chicago's pride Bertoletti told The Post Wednesday.

Bertoletti took home the 2024 Mustard Belt at last year's Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest — which Chestnut was dramatically barred from over a contract dispute related to a sponsorship deal with another hot dog brand.
Had the the 16-time Nathan's champ been there, he would have been a hard nut to crack for Bertoletti, who won by wolfing down 58 dogs — which is nearly 20 less than Chestnut's Nathan's personal best of 76 franks.

Chestnut also hadn't eaten less than 60 at the Coney Island contest since 2011 — and just two months after missing last year's Nathan's contest, Chestnut won another event with a record-breaking 83 franks.
It was revealed Tuesday that Chestnut and Major League Eating were actively negotiating to have him return to the annual Coney Island event, though nothing was yet confirmed.
Bertoletti also shot down any suggestions that the contested back-and-forth could have been a PR stunt, saying: 'I don't think anyone was that good to do that. I mean, if he does come back, it's probably make the contest bigger than ever. But I don't think that at all.'
While hard to digest, the news isn't the wurst, Bertoletti emphasized — calling Chestnut his dining buddy for more than two decades.

'It didn't feel right without him there. I know if he wasn't there I'd have a better shot to win, but I'd rather he'd be there than anything else,' Bertoletti said, revealing he was fresh off a video chat with his hungry rival.
That doesn't mean he's not going to give Chestnut a run for his money, he warned: 'I'm a realist. But what I'm saying is, out of anyone else who has a chance to beat him?'
Bertoletti admitted he was looking forward to having the heat off him if Chestnut returns, noting that he liked 'flying under the radar' throughout the last few years of competition.

'Being a returning champ, everyone is looking at me, which is weird because I'm not used to that,' Bertoletti said.
Bertoletti has been conducting miniature hot dog 'practices' several times a week — and even posted some videos of him curling packs of Nathan's dogs in preparation for the big contest.
'It's just it's not pretty. It's not interesting either. Just a lot of hot dogs,' he said of his training, adding that it's easy because he never gets tired of eating the franks.
3 Bertoletti hopes to beat his record of 58 franks, with a new goal of gobbling up at least 60.
Paul Martinka
While he would relish in first place, the current title holder has his eyes on setting a new personal dog record and hopes to eat at least 60 — a far cry from the world record-breaking 83 franks Chestnut gobbled up last September.
After being banned from the Coney Island contest, Chestnut competed instead at the Pop Goes the Fort eating contest on Fort Bliss, where he scarfed down 57 dogs in just five minutes.

And more importantly, Bertoletti is looking forward to having fun.
'I would have never expected the reigning hot dog champion. This past year has been awesome and I'm just trying to enjoy it. I don't take myself too seriously,' he added.

Brooklyn Mirage ticket holders left in dark after rescheduled shows as status of venue is in limbo

It's unclear when The Brooklyn Mirage will reopen as frustrated ticket holders are left without answers from the venue and a slate of scheduled concerts is fast approaching. The East Williamsburg open-air concert hall — which has been haunted by the deaths of two ravers — hasn't been given the OK from the city to reopen after it closed for extensive renovations and blew past its planned relaunch on May 1. But the venue suddenly announced it had cancelled its summer reopening after failing to secure the proper city permits, even cancelling a sold-out show just before a DJ was set to hit the stage. Advertisement The last update the venue provided announced shows through Memorial Day weekend would be cancelled and rescheduled for July and August, according to an Instagram post. 5 Brooklyn Mirage ticket holders have grown frustrated at the venue's radio silence since its last Memorial Day announcement about cancelled shows. NY Post 'We apologize to our incredible community of fans, artists, crew members, and staff for the delay. Though the Brooklyn Mirage is opening later than anticipated, we are making great progress towards opening our doors… We are working diligently with the City of New York to make sure we meet all regulations and requirements,' the May 20 announcement said. Advertisement 'If you cannot attend rescheduled shows, you will be given a full refund,' the venue wrote. A month later, ticket holders and rave-goers are still left without answers — even losing out on plane fare to make it to shows that were rescheduled last minute in June. Commenters have flocked to the recent announcement to nag the venue for the reopening limbo. 5 There has been no official update from the Brooklyn Mirage since the venue announced shows through Memorial Day weekend would be cancelled. Advertisement 'Did y'all die?' one commenter wrote. Temple Barros, 47, from the Bronx, has been an 'avid concert goer' at Brooklyn Mirage since 2016 — but said his beloved venue's handling of the reopening has been a 'disappointment.' 'I'm not here to bash it because I've been going to Brooklyn Mirage since 2016. I'm an avid goer every other week … I've been going since they just had the white wall and the umbrella over the DJ booth,' Barros said. 'This year has probably been the biggest disappointment. I had a friend flying from Florida to go see Excision, which they said they would be open that week, and they were not. So he had tickets, flights, and hotels, and I felt bad,' he said. Advertisement Barros had also planned to attend a DJ set by Sara Landry, a Netherlands-based techno artist, on May 1 — which was rescheduled at Knockdown Center that evening. 5 The DJ set of Netherlands-based techno artist Sara Landry was also cancelled at the Brooklyn Mirage due to the failed reopening weekend. instagram/saralandryd 'My friend still complains to this day that she had one eyelash on. We were getting ready to walk out the door, and we all got the text message an hour before we were supposed to go to the show, and that was crazy.' Christina P, from Long Island, also had her cousin fly out from Georgia so they could attend a concert for the American DJ/producer duo 'Two Friends' on June 13 together. After seeing the Memorial Day announcement, Christina grew skeptical that the show would go on. 'I called the venue and asked them what was up so my cousin could cancel her flights. They told me that they didn't have any information, though, that they'd post something on social media and to call back the next week,' she said. 5 A Temporary Place of Assembly certificate, which allows 75 or more people to gather indoors or 200 or more people to gather outdoors, has been requested for the venue's outdoor area. Instagram Just three days before the show, the artist announced the event would be rescheduled for Sept. 12 at Summerstage in Central Park. Advertisement The Brooklyn Mirage eventually reposted the artist's announcement on their Instagram story, according to Christina. 'My cousin was not able to cancel her flight. We were still able to hang out, but now she was out the money for her plane ticket,' she said. 'We just want transparency. The venue could've been more open about what they were doing. They knew they had problems with permits. They could've been more explicit. They didn't have to waste anybody's time,' Christina said. The venue is still undergoing permit problems despite shows on the calendar for the remainder of June. Advertisement 5 The venue is still not permitted to operate, according to the Department of Buildings. Gregory P. Mango The Brooklyn Mirage 'is currently not permitted to operate as they submitted job filing applications that remain under audit,' the Department of Buildings said in a statement. A Temporary Place of Assembly certificate, which allows 75 or more people to gather indoors or 200 or more people to gather outdoors, has been requested for the venue's outdoor area and is still under review, the DOB said. The venue has been awarded the TPA certificate for The Great Hall, an eating and drinking establishment on The Brooklyn Mirage's property, according to the department. Advertisement The venue's operator, Avant Gardner, did not respond to requests for comment. Avant Gardner's CEO, Josh Wyatt, was also fired amid the Memorial Day reopening snafu, BK Mag reported. Wyatt had previously assured people the venue would be '100 percent' ready for the May 1 reopening in an interview with the outlet just days before. Advertisement 'At the end of the day, you can't do that [cancel] to people that are coming from all miles out of the way,' Barros said. 'This [the Brooklyn Mirage] is our safe space, this is our out … What hurts the most is that the safe space that we thought we had is not here this year.'

Kerry Kennedy allegedly getting $1M+ to save family's reputation — as cousin Caroline is ‘virtually blacklisted' over son's odd behavior

For decades, the Kennedys — America's so-called royal family — were known for politics, scandals and tragedies. Today, they're earning a schoolyard reputation for infighting, with mean-spirited attacks on siblings and cousins, bizarre social media rants and revelations of historically bitchy personal feuds. Hoping to quell the embarrassing, reality show-worthy drama and bring the family together before it implodes, Kerry Kennedy has signed what sources describe as a seven-figure deal for a book paying tribute to her mother, family matriarch Ethel Skakel Kennedy who passed last October at 96. 10 Kerry Kennedy is writing a new book about family matriach Ethel Kennedy. Evan Agostini/Invision/AP This is somewhat ironic given that penned by Kerry, the seventh of Ethel's and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy's brood of 11, is one of the most vocal leaders in the family's current display of bad blood. 'Kerry's well-varnished book will be little more than a last-ditch attempt to salvage the increasingly tarnished Kennedy name,' one insider told The Post. Kerry Kennedy declined to comment. Entitled 'Ethel: Faith, Hope, Family, and an Extraordinary Life' and penned with a ghostwriter, the book is planned for fall 2026. Whether it can bring the family together, or truly spiff up their tarnished legacy, remains to be seen. 'Like the Titanic, the Kennedy brand is a sinking ship,' the insider said. 10 Caroline Kennedy-Schlossberg is said to be ostracized by her famous cousins' over her son's odd behavior on social media. FilmMagic 10 Caroline has called cousin RFK Jr. a 'predator' while her son Jack (right) has called him a 'liar' and a 'guru shaman.' Democratic National Convention via CNP / MEGA But, for all their talk about public service, the family's battles are no surprise. In fact, sources said, RFK's staunchly Democratic widow, Ethel, who died of a stroke, would have 'savored and enjoyed the very public attacks and controversy' involving some of her children — including the verbal assaults on Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. — when he briefly ran for president last year and later became Donald Trump's Secretary of Health and Human Services. At least some of the 'attacks and snubs against Bobby Jr. were actually at the behest of Ethel,' alleged the insider. 'She also was behind the photo [taken March 2024, just before RFK Jr. announced his presidential run] of three generations of her family with a smiling Joe Biden in their midst — all as a subtle [message] to Bobby. He was her least favorite son.' 10 Jack Schlossberg, the only grandson of former US President John F. Kennedy, has mocked cousin RFK Jr.'s vocal disorder and made strange jokes about Second Lady Usha Vance. Ron Sachs – CNP for NY Post It was alleged favorite daughter Kerry who, on her mother's instructions, posted the photo on X, declaring of Biden, 'You make the world better.' In addition to six of RFK Jr.'s living siblings — former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy, former US Rep. Joe Kennedy II, human rights activist Kerry Kennedy, filmmaker Rory Kennedy, lawyer Max Kennedy and businessman Christopher Kennedy — rebuking his presidential campaign by calling it 'dangerous' and publicly endorsing Joe Biden, his cousin Caroline also made her feelings known. Early this year, Caroline, now 67, and. the former US Ambassador to Japan and then Australia, wasn't very diplomatic when it came to her first cousin, calling him a 'predator' and hypocrite and unqualified to run HHS. She also claimed: 'Bobby expropriated my father's image and distorted President Kennedy's legacy to advance his own failed presidential campaign and groveled to Donald Trump for a job.' 10 John. F Kennedy and wife Jackie Kennedy Onassis. Getty Images Nonetheless, according to insiders, Caroline has been 'virtually blacklisted' by some of her cousins over the bizarre social media postings of her son, Jack Schlossberg. The 31-year-old has posted videos of himself making fun of RFK Jr.'s spasmodic dysphonia, a neurological disorder that affects his speech and which other members of the family may also have. Schlossberg has also called the health secretary a 'liar' and a 'guru shaman figure who runs a cult' and taunted Vice-President J. D. Vance and his wife, Usha, joking about having a baby with her and writing, 'True or false: Usha Vance is way hotter than Jackie O' — his maternal grandmother. 10 Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1968 at a hotel in Los Angeles. Getty Images His various remarks prompted RFK Jr.'s daughter, Kathleen 'Kick' Kennedy to previously tell The Post: 'I hope he gets the help he needs.' Sources say Schlossberg's behavior has led to Caroline — whose parents and brother are deceased — being completely isolated from the Kennedy tribe, which 'is hurtful to her.' The Post has reached out to Caroline for comment. 'Jack's more Schlossberg than Kennedy in attitude,' a close source said, referring to Schlossberg's father, the very private and eccentric artist and designer Edwin Schlossberg, 73, who comes from a prominent Jewish New York family. 10 RFK Jr. shocked and upset many members of his own staunchly Democrat family when he first supported Republican Donald Trump's election then joined his government at secretary of Health and Human Services. REUTERS Snarky Spy magazine once called Edwin 'a well-to-do hippie-yuppie who's self-consciously interesting… Camelot's egghead-in-residence.' Although little known publicly, the current feuds within the Kennedy family have a long history going back to Ethel and her late sister-in-law, John F. Kennedy's widow, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, whom Ethel ruthlessly attacked. 'She thinks she's a queen. When Jackie once mentioned she dreamed of being a ballet dancer, Ethel stared at Jackie's slender size-11 feet, muttering to her face, 'With those clodhoppers of yours? You'd be better off going into soccer,' ' a source commented for my book 'The Other Mrs. Kennedy: An Intimate and Revealing Look at the Hidden Life of Ethel Skakel Kennedy.' 10 RFK Jr.'s daughter Kick Kennedy waded into the fray to call out cousin Jack Schlossberg. Getty Images for RFK Human Right Meanwhile, Jackie, sources added, considered Ethel 'crude and boorish,' and referred to her as a 'baby-making machine — wind her up and she becomes pregnant.' Jackie's revenge against the insults was to distance her own children, John Jr. and Caroline, from Ethel's children. When Ethel extended an invitation to her niece and nephew to stay for a couple of weeks at her family's home Hickory Hill in McLean, Virginia, Jackie declared, 'No way!'' And through the generations the feuding continues. JFK Jr. also got his digs in when he was founding editor of the political magazine George in the mid-1990s. 10 The Kennedy family compound in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. AP In a signed editorial, he pilloried his Kennedy cousins — Ethel's sons Michael (who died as the result of a skiing accident in 1997) and Joe — as 'poster boys for bad behavior' regarding their marital scandals. While Kerry Kennedy's planned book is said to paint her mother as a virtual saint, and the Kennedys as a close and loving family, an insider told The Post that 'dysfunction rather than perfection' was a way of life for the late matriarch. As Ethel's fourth-born, David Anthony Kennedy, who died of a heroin overdose in 1984 at 36, once revealed, 'Those stories about what a big, happy family we had at Hickory Hill were all bulls—t. Life at home was mayhem, a mess. 'My mother was always having screaming rages. The house looked like a shithole. She didn't know how to deal with so many kids.' 10 RFK Jr. originally ran for president himself in 2024, before dropping out and endorsing Trump. Paul Martinka A child-care sitter retained by Ethel once even admitted that the middle children — Courtney, David and RFK Jr. – 'were virtually left to fend for themselves, with little or no supervision.' The sitter also called Ethel a 'distant, detached, and standoffish mother. When popular Look magazine decided to do a cover story on Ethel, then pregnant, as the possible next future first lady when RFK began his ill-fated 1968 presidential run, the bi-weekly's crack photographer-reporter team, Stanley Tretick and Laura Bergquist, were assigned. The magazine ran an upbeat story, but Tretick and Bergquist were privately shocked by what they witnessed. Tretick later revealed: 'I never thought she was a great mother… The kids all went their separate ways. It was like bedlam, everyone running around crazy… one night Ethel was going to fix food for us, but she said 'I don't know how to fix s—t!' She couldn't handle anything in the kitchen. Bobby looked at her and said, 'Mother of the year.' 'Our view of Ethel was, 'God, it's going to be bedlam, just nuts, if she goes to the White House, because that place will become a real zoo.''

New Yorker dresses as ‘washed up scum' Andrew Cuomo in Mermaid Parade

A man dressed as a bizzare depiction of former Gov. Andrew Cuomo showed up to march in the Coney Island Mermaid Parade Saturday — with a special plea for his fellow New Yorkers. 'I'm trying to get reelected on Tuesday and I thought I'd bring my message to the voters,' the man who only called himself 'washed up scum,' sarcastically told The Post. 3 The man dressed as Andrew Cuomo in the Mermaid Parade insisted people call him 'washed up scum.' Samantha Olander The costume was complete with messy green strings to represent algae the former Governor would have encountered as he washed up on the shore, a torn-up dress shirt — and Cuomo's oversized head. On his backside, the man had a sign that read 'don't rank me,' a reference to the Big Apple's ranked choice voting, where electors place up to five mayoral candidates in order of preference. 3 Voters in NYC can rank up to five candidates in order of preference for the mayoral election. Samantha Olander 'I made the state fill up with as much scum as I could when I was governor and I'd like to do that to the city,' the mystery man said, adding it was his first mermaid parade. Cuomo is the frontrunner heading into Tuesday's Democratic mayoral primary, though surging socialist Zohran Mamdani has been making up ground — cutting the ex-lawmaker's lead in half from just a month ago. The Ex-Governor is ahead 55% to 45% against Mamdani in the latest poll released Wednesday. The heated NYC Democratic mayoral primary has lit a fire under Big Apple voters — twice the number of New Yorkers are turning out for early voting compared to four years ago, data from the city Board of Elections shows. 3 Cuomo resigned as New York Governor in disgrace in 2021.
