AM Best Upgrades Credit Ratings of Members of Midwest Insurance Group

Business Wire05-06-2025

BUSINESS WIRE)-- AM Best has upgraded the Financial Strength Rating to A (Excellent) from A- (Excellent) and the Long-Term Issuer Credit Ratings (Long-Term ICR) to 'a' (Excellent) from 'a-' (Excellent) of Midwest Insurance Company (Springfield, IL), West River Insurance Company (Sioux Falls, SD) and Brickyard Insurance Company (Fort Wayne, IN), collectively known as Midwest Insurance Group (Midwest). The outlook of these Credit Ratings (ratings) has been revised to stable from positive.
The ratings reflect Midwest's balance sheet strength, which AM Best assesses as very strong, as well as its strong operating performance, limited business profile and appropriate enterprise risk management (ERM).
Midwest's balance sheet strength is supported by its strongest risk-adjusted capitalization, as measured by Best's Capital Adequacy Ratio (BCAR). The group's capital position reflects consistent operating performance and a diversified, well-managed investment portfolio that provides a steady stream of net investment income, which coupled with historically strong favorable reserve development, liquidity and cash flow metrics supports the very strong balance sheet assessment.
The group's operating performance has been upgraded to strong from adequate. This assessment is supported by sustained profitability in the group's underwriting results combined with increasing levels of investment income. Midwest's operating performance compares very favorably with the workers' compensation composite on a five-year and 10-year basis contributing to strong, organic growth in surplus. Additionally, return-on-revenue and return-on-equity metrics have outpaced the composite over the past five years.
Midwest maintains modest business concentration risk, operating as a monoline workers' compensation insurer focusing on small- to medium-sized agency partners. As a monoline workers' compensation insurer, its limited business profile leaves it susceptible to competitive pressures in certain jurisdictions, as well as potential legislative, regulatory or judicial changes. This concern is mitigated partly by the group's strategy to ensure responsiveness to its local agency base.

Iowa City's Mercer Aquatic Center will likely close for roof replacement. Find out when:

A popular Iowa City swimming hole is getting a new roof. The Mercer Aquatic Center's roof will be replaced in the coming months at an estimated cost of $655,000. The current roof "has reached the end of its serviceable life," a memo to the council said. The project will include a complete teardown of the existing roof and full replacement. More: Iowa House clears hurdle to call for special session to override eminent domain bill veto Bidding is expected to begin on July 1. The contract is then anticipated to be awarded on July 8, pending approval by the Iowa City City Council. City staff estimated that the pool would only be closed for a couple of weeks and work would be completed alongside routine maintenance. Staff also set September 5 as the date to refill the pool in time for the girls' high school swimming season. All work is expected to be completed over the subsequent two months, with a completion date estimated for Sept. 12. The Mercer closure joins City Park Pool, which is closed this summer as crews demolish and reconstruct the long-time outdoor facility. The new pool is set to open by Memorial Day weekend in 2026. The Robert A. Lee Recreation Center is also home to an indoor pool and is open seven days a week. The pool begins serving patrons each day at 6:15 a.m., except on Sunday. Coralville's S.T. Morrison Park is home to an outdoor aquatic center while the city is also home to an indoor pool. Ryan Hansen covers local government and crime for the Press-Citizen. Best's Review Examines How FAIR Plans Are Finding Competitive Foothold

OLDWICK, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--In its June issue, Best's Review reports on how insurers, without the rate adequacy they need to sustain their books, are exiting high-risk areas and leaving consumers with few remaining options. Many homeowners have had to turn to the residual market because of a decline in availability of coverage, even though FAIR Plan policies may cost more than private insurance in the voluntary market and may offer less coverage. Best's Market Segment Report: 2024 Pricing Cuts in U.S. Cyber Generated First-Ever Reduction in Direct Premiums Written

OLDWICK, N.J., June 23, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Premiums generated from cyber insurance coverage declined by 2.3% to slightly less than $7.1 billion in 2024 compared with a year earlier, marking the first ever decrease in the segment since the data was first collected in 2015, according to a new AM Best report. Despite the drop in premium, the loss ratio for the U.S. cyber segment remained below the 50% mark in 2024, suggesting that the line of coverage is still profitable for those who choose to underwrite the risk. According to the report, the decrease in premiums is driven more by pricing changes than any changes in exposure. "When premium grew during the hard market cycle, the growth significantly outpaced the pricing increases, indicating that demand for cyber insurance was increasing as well," said Christopher Graham, senior industry analyst, AM Best. "Considering that the premium decrease is close to the pricing decrease, that would indicate that the demand for cyber insurance is steady." However, the report also notes that some large organizations may be shifting their cyber exposure to their own single-parent captive insurers. Such organizations that have a favorable loss experience find it beneficial to maintain the premium under the parent company's structure and typically don't file the related cyber data reports with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. Among the report's other highlights: Much of the new capacity during the hard market came from surplus lines writers. Those carriers have held—and marginally increased—their market share even as the total premium slightly contracted; Surplus lines paper remains the prime spot for complicated cyber risks, and this is evident through the split among primary, excess, and endorsement coverage. While surplus lines writers benefited from the hard market pricing of 2020-2022, that benefit seems to have now worn off. When new writers enter the market during a hard market cycle, those writers get the benefit of the stronger pricing without having to pay the legacy losses. AM Best has maintained a stable outlook on the global cyber insurance segment, citing a cautious level of underwriting in a dynamic risk environment.
