Maserati MSG driver Jake Hughes looking at the 'positive signs' ahead of the Shanghai E-Prix
Maserati MSG Racing driver Jake Hughes may not be having an ideal Formula E season, but the British racer has a lot to look forward to in Shanghai at the upcoming double header. He had secured second place on the podium in part of the 2024 Shanghai E-Prix, giving him added confidence to aim high in the upcoming race.
He earned that podium while driving for NEOM McLaren last year, before making the switch to Maserati MSG.
Jake Hughes's performance this season
Jake Hughes has participated in just 40 races so far and has already claimed two podium finishes, including one at the Jeddah E-Prix earlier this year. He currently stands fifteenth in the Formula E Driver Standings with 27 points. He finished tenth in the Mexico Round 2 race and fifth in Jeddah Round 3 before securing a podium in Round 4 in Jeddah.
Since then, however, his on-track performance has seen a decline.
At the recently held Tokyo E-Prix double header this month, Hughes finished last in both Round 8 and Round 9 races. Sharing a slow-motion video of himself in a helmet days after the race, Hughes wrote on Instagram, 'Japan was a rough one. Fast in all practice sessions but qualifying really curtailed our whole weekend. But some positive signs at least that will hopefully be turning our season around very shortly.
#maserati #formulae #tokyoeprix #tokyoeprix.
'
Boosting his morale, the official Formula E Instagram handle commented on his post: 'Onto Shanghai,' along with the raising hands emoji.
During the Tokyo E-Prix, Hughes also shared several pictures of his Maserati MSG livery on the wet track, captioned: 'Wetter than a pocket full of Otters.' Heavy rain affected the first Round 8 race, which followed a grid order determined by free practice results.

Now, all he needs is to replicate the success he found in Jeddah. Rounds 10 and 11 of the FIA Formula E World Championship 2025 are scheduled for May 31 and June 1. Good luck to Jake Hughes!

One spectator dead, several injured after fall from upper stand in Algeria
One spectator died and several others were injured after falling from an upper stand of the stadium following MC Alger winning the Algerian top-flight league for the second season in a row, media reports said on Saturday. MC Alger said one of its supporters had died in the incident at the 5 July 1962 Stadium in the capital Algiers, with the Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune offering his condolences and wishing a speedy recovery for the injured. 'It is with great sadness and sorrow and with hearts that we received the news of our supporter Younes Amguzzi, who passed away after falling from the upper stands,' MC Alger said in an Instagram post. Local media reports said the spectators fell after a fence in the upper stand broke, with El Heddaf TV's Facebook page posting a video showing part of a railing collapsing into the lower tier. The injured spectators were rushed to the hospital, where MC Alger players, staff, and administrators also went to donate blood as the trophy presentation ceremony was postponed, the reports added.

Nyck De Vries collides with Jake Dennis at Jakarta E-Prix, fans compare him to Max Verstappen
Image credit: Nyck De Vries Dan Ticktum won his first Formula E race in Jakarta on Saturday. But the result of the race could have been different had Mahindra Racing's Nyck De Vries not made contact with Andretti's Jake Dennis. De Vries was issued a ten-second time penalty during the race, but it also killed the chances of either of them reaching the podium. In the end, it was the other Mahindra Racing driver, Edoardo Mortara, who took the second spot on the podium, with the other Andretti driver, Nico Mueller, finishing in third position. When Nyck De Vries made contact with Jake Dennis At Lap 20, the Mahindra Racing cars made a sandwich at the top, squeezing Dennis into second position, but De Vries' contact with Dennis killed both their chances of reaching the podium. Pole winner Jake Dennis was very much in the race when Mahindra Racing's Nyck De Vries made contact with him. As a result of the collision, debris from both cars was seen flying onto the track, with the Andretti car suffering more damage after losing its front wing. The safety car came out, and the debris had to be cleared, bringing the race to a halt. After 30 laps, it was De Vries on top, followed by Dan Ticktum and then Jake Dennis. In fourth place was De Vries' Mahindra Racing teammate, Edoardo Mortara. The penalty, however, changed the order at the top. Jake Dennis reacts to collision with Nyck De Vries Jake Dennis highlighted the collision by sharing the video on his Instagram Stories and wrote, 'Leading the race then get welcomed with this.' The Andretti driver was a contender for the winner's trophy after securing pole. He had earned two podiums at the Jakarta double-header in 2023 and was very much in form to win another podium on Saturday. Formula E fans compare Nyck De Vries with Max Verstappen The video was shared on Formula E's social media channels. A fan reacted to the video, 'Thought that was Max Verstappen.' Another called it a 'Classic Dutch move.' One more said, 'Dutch drivers incapable of racing wheel to wheel with British drivers? I've seen this one before.' Former England fast bowler David Lawrence dead at 61
David 'Syd' Lawrence, the first British-born black cricketer to play for England, has died at the age of 61, it was announced Sunday. Nearly a year ago it was revealed that Gloucestershire fast bowler Lawrence, who took 18 wickets in five Tests between 1988 and 1992, had been diagnosed with motor neurone disease, an incurable illness, which progressively damages parts of the nervous system. A statement from Lawrence's family given to Britain's PA news agency said: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dave Lawrence MBE following his brave battle with motor neurone disease." Lawrence bagged a five-wicket haul against the West Indies in 1991 to help England seal a series-levelling win at the Oval, with Desmond Haynes and Vivian Richards among the batsmen he dismissed. But his career all but ended the following year with a sickening injury when he shattered his kneecap running into bowl during a Test against New Zealand in Wellington. That was the end of his time with England, although he made a brief comeback for Bristol-based Gloucestershire, playing four four-first class games in 1997 before retiring for good after taking 625 wickets for the county. He later became president of Gloucestershire, with his old county saying in a social media post Sunday that they were "devastated" to learn of Lawrence's death. Following his MND diagnosis, there were emotional scenes when Gloucestershire won the T20 Blast final at Edgbaston last year, with captain James Bracey presenting the trophy to Lawrence. His MND diagnosis also hastened Lawrence's autobiography amid fears he would lose the ability to speak. Titled 'In Syd's Voice', and written with the help of cricket journalist Dean Wilson, the book was published this month. England and Wales Cricket Board chairman Richard Thompson hailed Lawrence as a "true trailblazer" who became a "powerful voice for inclusion and representation in our sport". There was a minute's applause in honour of Lawrence before the start of the third day's play in the first Test between England and India at Headingley on Sunday, with players and officials also wearing black armbands as a mark of respect.
