Bribery case: Kerala HC extends order restraining arrest of ED officer

Bribery case: Kerala HC extends order restraining arrest of ED officer

Time of India5 days ago

Kochi: HC on Tuesday extended for two more weeks its earlier interim order restraining the arrest of Shekhar Kumar, assistant director of
Enforcement Directorate
(ED) in Kochi, who is facing a vigilance case for allegedly demanding Rs 2 crore bribe from a Kollam-based cashew trader to derail a money laundering probe.
Justice A Badharudeen is considering Kumar's pre-arrest bail plea. The state govt sought additional time to file its reply, citing the need to analyse digital data retrieved from the mobile phones of other accused, which had been sent for forensic examination. Granting the request, HC adjourned the matter to July 3.
The case stems from a complaint filed by Aneesh Babu, a Kollam-based cashew businessman, who alleged that ED officials demanded a bribe to halt proceedings under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
The PMLA investigation followed a police case accusing Aneesh of cheating local traders by taking advance payments for imported cashew nuts without supplying the goods. According to the complaint, two middlemen, Wilson Varghese and Mukesh Kumar, approached Aneesh on behalf of the ED officer and demanded Rs 2 crore to drop the investigation.
The vigilance officials arrested both middlemen, who, during interrogation, allegedly implicated Shekhar Kumar, leading to his arraignment as the first accused.
In a related development, Justice Kauser Edappagath on Tuesday closed the pre-arrest bail plea filed by Aneesh Babu in the PMLA case. The ED submitted that Babu had only been summoned as an informer and that there was no intent to arrest him. The court, recording the submission, closed his petition.

Punjab: 60 firms under lens for ₹950-crore GST scam, police investigation on

The Mandi Gobindgarh police in Fatehgarh Sahib have been investigating a multi-crore GST scam, allegedly involving over 60 fictitious companies. The FIR was registered recently on the complaint of a Ludhiana-based businessman, who said that he has now submitted more proof of 'fake' transactions and copies of 70 cheques in the ' ₹ 950-crore scam'. In his complaint to the DGP, Bureau of Investigation and senior Fatehgarh Sahib police authorities, Kashmir Giri of Khanna has sought a thorough and impartial investigation. The Mandi Gobindgarh police had registered an FIR on June 11. Claiming that more than 60 firms were involved in the scam, he alleged collusion between private individuals and government officials. After the registration of the FIR on June 11, the police had formed a special investigation team (SIT). According to Giri, the FIR concerns forged sale and lease deeds executed using the names of his sons through fake firms. He alleged that the key conspirators created shell companies using fake IDs, dummy directors and even forged rent agreements and lease deeds — all without his family's knowledge. He said officials must inquire the origin of the funds used to buy high-value stamp papers and also the role of sub-registrars and others who facilitated such transactions. 'A sale deed dated August 11, 2022, shows a transaction worth over ₹ 1.97 crore and claimed to have been paid through cheques. But such cheques were never issued or encashed. The beneficiary firm is non-functional. A CGST inspection report dated September 30, 2024, verified this, but no further action was taken by authorities,' he mentioned. He further alleged that officials from several private banks helped open accounts for such bogus firms without proper verification. The complaint referenced a high court order dated April 23, directing the Punjab DGP to act on Giri's earlier representation. Besides seeking a thorough probe, he has sought safety of his family. The Mandi Gobindgarh police has slapped Sections 419, 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120-B of the IPC. One of the SIT members, seeking anonymity, said an investigation was being conducted. 'Huge suspicious transactions were found during the investigation,' he added.

Haryana: Fake bride, agent held for duping Rewari groom

Two weeks after an Uttar Pradesh-based woman allegedly fled with cash and gold from her newlywed husband's home in Rewari, the Rewari police arrested her and a marriage agent who arranged the match for ₹ 2 lakh. Both the accused are residents of Uttar Pradesh. (HT File) The accused — Kausalya, who posed as a bride under fake name Pooja, and agent Sohale — both residents of Uttar Pradesh, were produced before a local court and sent to two days' police remand. The scam was uncovered when Rewari resident Jaldeep lodged a complaint against his wife and the agent, accusing them of cheating him in the name of marriage. According to the complaint, Jaldeep's father was introduced to Sohale through Rajbir, a native of Behror, Rajasthan, who assured him that his Uttar Pradesh-based friend could find a suitable bride for his son. 'On May 25, Sohale met my father and introduced a woman named Pooja. Sohale and the woman's family demanded ₹ 2 lakh for the wedding, which was solemnised with rituals on June 4 at Pati village in Ambedkar Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh,' said Jaldeep. 'After returning to Rewari the next day, the bride disappeared overnight with gold ornaments and ₹ 20,000 cash,' he added. Sub-inspector Surender Kumar of Bawal police station said that during questioning, it was revealed that the bride's real name is Kausalya, a mother of four. Police also discovered that she had previously cheated a groom in Rajasthan last year, fleeing after her wedding with ₹ 1 lakh cash and gold ornaments worth ₹ 2 lakh. Rajasthan police had arrested her and her accomplice Rakesh in that case as well. 'During questioning, the woman confessed to dupe another groom in Rajasthan in February last year and said she was out on bail. Her husband is a labourer in Delhi and has no contact with her. We are now investigating Rakesh's role,' said Kumar.

UP court declares 1.7 crore property of hooch kingpin govt property

In a first-of-its-kind action against illicit liquor trade, the special Gangster Act court of Ambedkar Nagar in UP has declared property worth Rs 1.7 crore of alleged hooch kingpin Motilal Gupta as govt property. According to court records, Gupta, a resident of Azamgarh, ran a large-scale operation producing spurious country liquor packaged with fake labels and sold across nearby villages and districts. The illegal trade came to light after a tragedy on May 10, 2021, when several villagers died from consuming the toxic brew. Gupta and ten associates were booked under the UP Gangsters Act, and their properties were seized. The court later upheld the seizure, stating that Gupta and his wife failed to prove lawful ownership, and confirmed the assets as state property.
