Anwar: No interference in Najib's DNAA court decision
PUCHONG: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim asserted that he had no involvement in the Kuala Lumpur High Court's decision to grant a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak over three money laundering charges involving RM27 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd.
'That is the judge's decision, and the Attorney General's. I do not interfere,' he said briefly when approached by reporters after performing Friday prayers at Masjid Kampung Seri Aman today.
Earlier, Judge K Muniandy allowed the defence's application for a DNAA, citing the prosecution's lack of preparedness to proceed with trial proceedings, which have been marked by persistent postponements since 2019.
The court was informed that the prosecution had yet to obtain the necessary documentary evidence. The delay, the judge noted, had denied the accused the right to a fair and timely resolution of the case.
A DNAA means the accused is temporarily discharged from the charges, but may still be prosecuted for the same offences in the future if the prosecution decides to reinstate them.

IPOH: The state government is urging the federal administration to prioritise the complete reconstruction and upgrading of the ageing Gerik–Jeli Highway under the upcoming Malaysia Plan. He added that the matter was raised with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during his visit to Manjung on June 15. "I had the opportunity to highlight the urgent need to upgrade the Gerik–Jeli Highway to the prime minister. "The prime minister acknowledged our concern but noted the high cost involved. Still, the state has formally registered our position," he said. When asked whether the proposal could be included in the 13th Malaysia Plan, Saarani confirmed that efforts were underway. "We are working to ensure this is included in the upcoming Malaysia Plan because it is a pressing need," he said. On June 11, Saarani said that proposals to either construct a new highway or establish an alternative route would be submitted to the federal government, citing the increasing number of accidents along the Gerik–Jeli Highway. Following this, state Infrastructure, Energy, Water and Public Transport Committee chairman Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Nizar Jamaluddin was tasked with overseeing the matter. Nizar has been instructed to prepare a detailed proposal, including route alignment, road widening, construction materials and related infrastructure, such as street lighting. This will then be submitted to the federal government. On another matter, Saarani said the state was requesting the Health Ministry to upgrade Gerik Hospital and its facilities in light of the frequent and serious traffic accidents along the highway. "We've asked Sivanesan (referring to state Health committee chairman A. Sivanesan) to prepare a formal application. Gerik Hospital needs better equipment, facilities and specialist staff. "Many critical patients need to be transferred to Taiping or Ipoh, and that can take up to two hours, and that delay can be fatal," he said. On June 9, a tragic crash along the East-West Highway at Km53 involving a bus carrying 42 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students underscored the need for urgent improvements. Malaysians Need To Earn Average RM4000 To Introduce GST, Says Anwar
Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the reintroduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) remains unsuitable for now, citing the rakyat's low income threshold as a key concern. Speaking during the Finance Ministry's monthly assembly, Anwar explained that although GST is recognised as an efficient and transparent taxation mechanism, it imposes a comprehensive financial burden — particularly on low-income earners. 'We postponed (GST) because the income of the people was still too low. My opinion at the time was that people with an income of RM2,000 were still affected although we gave some exemptions,' he said. He highlighted how even though basic necessities such as sugar and rice may be exempt, GST still applies indirectly when people purchase other goods or use public transport. 'It is comprehensive,' he noted. The government, according to Anwar, would only revisit GST implementation when the average household income reaches a more reasonable level — at least RM4,000 a month. 'Let the people's income increase first… maybe at that time we can (implement it). Right now, there are people earning RM1,700 or RM2,000,' he said. For now, the government is focused on a more targeted Sales and Service Tax (SST) system. He said tax revenue collected through SST will be channelled into core public sectors such as education and healthcare. 'The allocation for the Ministry of Education from RM58 billion in 2024 has increased to RM64 billion this year. Similarly, for the Ministry of Health, RM41 billion last year… we are adding RM4 billion to make it RM45 billion,' Anwar said. GST was introduced on Apr 1, 2015, with a standard rate of 6%, but was later repealed on Sept 1, 2018, following widespread criticism over its impact on consumers, particularly those from lower income brackets. It was replaced with the SST system. On 9 June, the government announced a targeted review of the Sales Tax rate and an expanded scope for the Service Tax, effective 1 July, aimed at strengthening Malaysia's fiscal position by increasing revenue while protecting essential goods from new taxes.
