Lions strengthen backroom staff for Australia tour

Jan 28 (Reuters) - Former Australia international David Nucifora will join the British and Irish Lions as general manager of performance ahead of this year's tour of Australia, the team said on Tuesday.
Ireland's head of athletic performance Aled Walters will assume the same role on head coach Andy Farrell's backroom staff after this year's Six Nations Championship.
"David's unrivalled experience will help us shape and deliver such a challenging and exciting rugby programme, whilst also bringing essential insight into Australian rugby and the country as a whole," Farrell said in a statement.
"Aled is a World Cup winner who has worked with players across England and Ireland and has also coached in Australia and Super Rugby with the Brumbies."
The Lions are set to play nine tour matches in Australia starting in June, including three tests against the Wallabies.

June 23 (Reuters) - Timoci Tavatavanawai was one of five uncapped players named in the All Blacks squad for the July series against France on Monday, the Fiji-born centre earning his first test call-up at the age of 27 after a superb Super Rugby season. Tavatavanawai's power and pace along with his ability to turn the ball over at the breakdown earned him a place in the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific dream team but he might find it tougher to break into the New Zealand midfield. Coach Scott Robertson has brought Jordie Barrett straight back into his squad after a sabbatical in Ireland with Leinster and also recalled powerhouse Quinn Tupaea after three injury-blighted seasons. "It's always a challenge to pick the best players in the country," Robertson said. "You look through the whole season, you look for reliability, the ability to keep turning up, their skill sets under pressure, how they complement the group. "It's a hell of a team, just congratulations to those debutants, their families, and who supported them to get here." Tavatavanawai said it had been an emotional moment for him and his family when he heard that his dream of an All Blacks call-up had been fulfilled. "It means everything," he said. "I left (home) when I was 16. My brother and sister were about 13 and I've missed a crucial part of their growing up. All that sacrifice comes up to this moment so it's pretty special. "I think that's why mum pretty much straight away jumped in my arms." Flanker Du'Plessis Kirifi and hooker Brodie McAlister are two other experienced players who have earned their first call-ups in their late 20s on the back of standout domestic seasons. "Du'Plessis is the ultimate story of what it takes to keep working and absolute desire to be an All Black," forwards coach Jason Ryan said of the 28-year-old openside. "He's got the balance right. He's learned a lot about himself learning Wellington and the Hurricanes. We know he's ready." There was no place in the squad for openside Dalton Papali'i or blindside Ethan Blackadder with Kirifi one of only five loose forwards selected along with Samipeni Finau, Ardie Savea, Wallace Sititi and Luke Jacobson. Jacobson picked up a knock in the Super Rugby final and uncapped number eight Christian Lio-Willie will join the squad as injury cover along with winger Emoni Narawa, who will make up the numbers while Anton Lienert-Brown completes his recuperation from a broken collarbone. Powerful loosehead prop Ollie Norris and Netherlands-born lock Fabian Holland round out the quintet of uncapped players named by Robertson. Chelsea star agrees with FIFA president over Club World Cup controversy

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has claimed that the players "love" the revamped Club World Cup and Chelsea star Pedro Neto seems to agree with that assessment Chelsea star Pedro Neto says he is "thankful" to be playing at the revamped Club World Cup instead of enjoying an extended break ahead of the new season. 32 teams are currently competing at the tournament, which has come in for huge criticism due to concerns over player burnout. Manchester City star Rodri has warned that players could go on strike over the increasing demands when it comes to schedules, while England captain Harry Kane believes player concerns are being ignored by the football's authorities. ‌ Players' union FIFPRO recently outlined a new 12-point plan that calls for major changes to protect footballers, including a minimum of four weeks' rest between seasons. In response to some of the criticism, FIFA president Gianni Infantino insisted the players "love" the event. ‌ "So, maybe some criticise it a little bit, but it's something new," Infantino said. "It's something special. It's a real World Cup with the best teams and the best players. It was about time that somebody invented a World Cup for club teams. "Since 100 years, we know which is the best country in the world, but, until today, we do not really know which is the best team in the world. So, we thought it might not be a bad idea to create a World Cup for teams to decide. "Well, I think the players who play, they are loving it. Harry Kane gave an interview saying, 'it's a fantastic competition. It's beautiful'. They (players) love it. Those who are not there, of course, they would love to be there." And Neto seems to agree with Infantino, insisting that "a lot of players that would love to be in my place". When asked if he would rather be on the beach instead of at the Club World Cup, Neto replied: "We have to be thankful. "We are here playing this tournament. I'm 100 percent sure. We have to enjoy it. There would be a lot of players that would love to be in my place, We are always confident. We are Chelsea, we play to win and we have an unbelievable team." ‌ Neto was speaking after Chelsea lost 3-1 to Flamengo in their second group game on Friday and the former Wolves winger believes the Blues simply lacked the same "desire" as their Brazilian rivals. "What went wrong was the second half, to be honest in the first half maybe they had more control of the ball but we could create the chances more than them," he added. "And when we went to the second half we tried to press a little bit higher. "We started well in the second half but what made the difference was a little bit the desire and they had more desire than us to win the game. Steven Naismith bangs drum for Shankland to Rangers move

Naismith worked with Shankland at Tynecastle and thinks he would fit seamlessly into life in Govan and could play a similar role for Russell Martin as Kris Boyd did under the great Walter Smith. "In one respect, I'm surprised [Rangers haven't made a move for Shankland]," he said. "I'm surprised because I think he's as safe a bet as you're going to get to scoring goals in Scotland. Shankland has scored 40 goals in his previous two seasons at Hearts. Currently out of contract, it remains to be seen where his future lies. The centre-forward is more than familiar with Rangers and having a key core of players who understand the club, its values, and the unrelenting demand for success, is crucial, according to Naismith. "If you look at the most successful Celtic and Rangers teams, they've had a core group of British players, players that have grown up with an affiliation," he added. "You cannot underestimate how valuable that is. And that's not just guys that start every week. That's guys within the squad that will do anything to be part of the squad. And they might just be coming in as squad players, but a lot of the guys grab the opportunity and take it."
