Manic Street Preachers: The story behind David Hurn album cover
David Hurn has always had an eye for seizing the moment. Now the acclaimed photographer has revealed the inspiration behind the new Manic Street Preachers album cover. It was while on his way to photograph the Navajo native Americans in Arizona that he saw the "strange" and drunken sight that has been used by the Welsh rockers for their latest release."I was given a bi-centennial fellowship award by the American government to go to Arizona and photograph," Hurn told Radio Wales Breakfast."The picture came about because I had contacts with the Navajo through doctors.
"I was driving to the reservation and went through an area called Painted Desert."Suddenly through the windscreen I saw this strange wiggly line. It was almost as if someone drunk had been making a drawing on the road. So I photographed it."
Critical Thinking is the Manics' 15th studio album and the first to feature the lead vocals of bassist Nicky Wire, a long-time admirer of Hurn who he has described as a "colossus" of of modern documentary photography. The 90-year-old has worked with a remarkable array of stars, including Michael Caine, Sean Connery and Sophia Loren. But despite once spending weeks behind the scenes with the The Beatles, this is the first time any of his work has featured on the cover of a rock album."Back in the '60s I did a few classical album covers but I don't even have the copies of them because they were so bad," laughed Hurn."The request came through my agent and when I was asked if it was OK for them [Manics] to use the photo I immediately replied, 'obviously yes'."
Raised in Cardiff but now living in Monmouthshire, Hurn was recently presented with the Outstanding Contribution to Journalism award at the 2024 Wales Media Awards for his near-70-year career."I never leave the house without a camera," he said."It's not that I go looking for a photo but for something that I find interesting and, hopefully, other people will find interesting."It's more to do with feeling than sight."

He picked Irish beauty Megan before getting her to lay on her tummy on the floor. Conor then hovered above her as they giggled and he said: "Pump." Tommy, who Megan is currently coupled up with, watched on in horror and shook his head. Welsh beauty Emily, who Conor said he was most invested in, then said: "If he carries on, he'll never find out how I am in bed." Elsewhere in the racy game, Helena lands on a dare and Dejon dares her to kiss the person that she'd chose to recouple with, she kisses Harrison. When she pulls a truth card, Harry asks Megan how she genuinely feels about Conor. She tells the group: 'Me and Conor got on from the start and that got cut short so I feel like there's unfinished business there, as you would say [Harry]'. Toni is asked how she feels to know that Harrison isn't just interested in her, given Helena's kiss in her dare. Toni responds 'When we talk to each other, he says the best chats are with me so he knows where home is'. Harry is dared to kiss the Islander he's best suited to whilst Shea is dared to tell each Islander the first word he thinks of them, to mixed reactions. In the teaser trailer for tonight's episode, which was shared with viewers on Friday night, In the brief clip, it was clear that Tommy snogged Welsh beauty Emily as Irish beauty Megan looked on in horror. Tommy is coupled with Megan, but now it looks like there might be tension between the two. He then sensationally smooched Shakira as well. Meanwhile, the real bombshell of the game looked to be Shakira's steamy smooch with Harry. In the teaser clip's edit, it seemed as though the Islanders were asked to snog who they'd most like to be coupled up with. It then cut to Shakira smooching Harry as Helena and Ben looked at their current love interests with disgust. "Is that Shakira and Harry kissing?" said one viewer in reaction to the teaser clip, at the time.

However, two years into the project, the building remains in a dire state, with the rear of the property crumbling. Initially, Martin estimated the renovation would take two years and £500,000 to complete, but he has since faced numerous setbacks with the eight-bedroom property. However, the star is currently navigating the complexities of planning permissions due to the risk of flooding in the area, reports the Express. The BBC star has brought a pub in Wales (Image: BBC ) Martin described the numerous hurdles he is facing, stating there are "lots of hoops to jump through". When he first purchased the property, it was in a state of disrepair, with "cock-eyed" walls, "every single window falling down", and bats nesting in the leaky roof. Notably, Martin did not even inform his wife Kirsty that he had bought the derelict pub while he was recovering from a heart operation in Wales. The pub will be the focus of a ten-part ITV documentary series next year, titled Oops! I Bought A Pub. The star's renovation journey will features in a ITV documentary series (Image: BBC ) Taking inspiration from Jeremy Clarkson, there are plans to suspend a Rolls-Royce upside down from the ceiling in the dining room, mirroring Jeremy's pub The Farmer's Dog which has a chrome tractor suspended from its roof. The establishment's eight bedrooms will be available for guests, each named after TV shows and designed with a unique feel. There are also plans for a new bar and restaurant within the property. The pub aims to employ around 30 local individuals, and will feature a teaching kitchen where celebrity chefs can impart their knowledge to the younger generation. Additionally, it will include a stage area for aspiring musicians to showcase their talent. Article continues below Homes Under the Hammer is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
