iPhone 17 could get a display upgrade — but still be inferior to the iPhone 17 Pro

Display rumors for the iPhone 17 series have pointed to a major screen upgrade for the basic models this year. But leaker Digital Chat Station on Weibo has made a new claim that makes us question how good this upgrade will actually be.
According to a translated version of his new post, DCS claims that the iPhone 17 series will have "high refresh rates across the board." However, in response to a commenter's question about the standard iPhone 17, DCS says to "lower your expectations appropriately," which is a caveat we've not seen in previous rumors.
We have heard for a while that the iPhone 17 will supposedly be the first non-Pro iPhone to get a 120Hz display. But based on what DCS is saying, the 120Hz screen of the iPhone 17 (and presumably the iPhone 17 Air) won't be the same as the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max's version.
This could mean that the iPhone 17 won't get the more battery-efficient adaptive ProMotion refresh rate that the Pro models have.
Another option is that the iPhone 17 will get a display refresh rate increase, but to a lower number like 90Hz. That would offer some additional smoothness over current basic iPhones, but not as much as a Pro model.
Whatever does end up happening, it still sounds like the end of 60Hz iPhones is a lock. And it comes not a moment too soon considering how the vast majority of Android phones of all prices already moved to high refresh rate displays years ago.
The second part of Digital Chat Station's leak tells us about the power of the A19 Pro chip that's expected to drive the iPhone 17 Pro models.

The A19 Pro will apparently be a 3nm chipset like the A18 and A18 Pro chips inside the iPhone 16 series, but will score over 4,000 points on the Geekbench 6 single-core CPU benchmark, and over 10,000 on the multi-core version.
In our testing, the iPhone 16 Pro managed 3,400 and 8,391 on Geekbench 6, meaning the iPhone 17 Pro would see at least a 15% increase in power from the previous version if DCS' numbers are correct. This would also likely make the iPhone 17 Pro the most powerful phone on sale when it releases, although this title tends to trade back and forth between Apple and the latest Android flagship phones quickly.

There's one feature Apple unveiled during WWDC on Monday that didn't get the attention I think it deserves: Adaptive Power. This AI-powered feature can help your iPhone battery last longer by lowering your display's brightness and making "small performance adjustments" like "allowing some activities to take a little longer," according to Apple. It'll also turn on Low Power Mode automatically when your battery drops to 20% to limit background activities and further extend battery life. Adaptive Power can come in clutch no matter what phone you have (as long as it can run iOS 26), but where it really has the potential to be a game-changer is with the rumored iPhone 17 Air. Apple's thinner iPhone is expected to debut in the fall, though the company has yet to confirm reports about its imminent arrival. A skinny iPhone would join the ranks of other slim phones like Samsung's Galaxy S25 Edge and the Oppo Find N5, which both came out earlier this year. And on Monday, hot on the heels of WWDC, Samsung also shared a teaser about its upcoming Galaxy Z foldable series, calling it "the thinnest, lightest and most advanced foldable yet." Thin phones can come across as gimmicky (who asked for them, really?), but they're undoubtedly having a moment as companies look for new ways to lure your dollars. After using devices like the Galaxy S25 Edge and Oppo Find N5, I can attest that holding a slim, lightweight phone is quite refreshing, and I'm eager to see what Apple has in store. But there's also a major downside to building a phone with such a slim profile, as I experienced recently with the S25 Edge: Battery life takes a hit. A thinner phone also means a smaller battery, which means shorter battery life. The S25 Edge, for instance, definitely needs a recharge at the end of the day -- no excess battery there. If Apple can find a way to make the iPhone 17 Air last beyond that bare minimum amount, that could really help its slim offering stand out. Adaptive Power may be the superpower Apple needs to appeal to anyone who won't sacrifice battery life for a thinner phone. But whether this feature truly is a breakthrough is up in the air -- along with the reality of the iPhone 17 Air itself. Tesla Friday signed a $556.8 million agreement to build a grid-scale battery storage station in China. The deal is with China Kangfu International Leasing Co., as well as the Shanghai local government. It's the first Tesla large-scale battery storage facility in China. In a statement on Chinese social media site Weibo, Tesla said, 'Tesla's first grid-side energy storage power station project in mainland China has been officially grid-side energy storage power station is a 'smart regulator' for urban electricity, which can flexibly adjust grid resources.' Tesla said that, when complete, this project is expected to become the largest grid-side energy storage project in China. Utility-scale battery energy storage assists energy grid management by keeping supply and demand in balance. More is being built worldwide. Tesla competed against two Chinese companies that offer similar products. CATL and automaker BYD have significant global market share in these battery storage products. Of all the questions about the rumored iPhone 17, there's one that could settle all others: When is the release date? All of the predictions and speculation about battery power, colors, price and more will be resolved when Apple releases the new iPhone, including the rumored iPhone Air. But even the release date is the subject of leaks and rumors. For nearly a decade, Apple has announced its new iPhone lineup in early September. (The only exception was during COVID, when the release was pushed back to Oct. 23, 2020, for the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro and Nov. 13, 2020, for the iPhone 12 Mini and 12 Pro Max.) Historically, Apple has made the announcement on the first Tuesday of September after Labor Day. However, the first Tuesday in 2025 is the day after Labor Day, so Apple could push the dates for its iPhone event to Wednesday, Sept. 3 or Tuesday, Sept. 9. That would mean a release date of Sept. 12 or 19. And because the new iPhone typically becomes available for preorder the Friday after, the preorder date could be either Sept. 5 or 12. That would mean the iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Air and the iPhone 17 base model -- if that's the lineup -- would be released in September. The iPhone 17E -- if it exists -- would be released in February. Apple's future iPhone release dates Apple is expected to change its release format with the rumored iPhone 18. Reports suggest that Apple will only release higher-end models in fall 2026 -- iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, Air and a rumored new foldable iPhone -- and release the rest of the line in winter 2027. Why does Apple split iPhone release dates? By pushing its top-of-the-line Pro and Pro Max models in September, Apple can capture much of the holiday shopping season. Releasing the more basic models in the winter allows a second crest of excitement, but diehard fans and holiday shoppers will have already spent their money on the pricier models in the fall.
