
Popular steakhouse set to open Portrush restaurant following £350k investment
NI's much loved food brand Top Blade is bringing its bold flavour and sizzling reputation to Portrush.
Opening this summer, the new restaurant will be serving up steaks just in time for the busy tourism season and the return of The Open to Royal Portrush in July.
Director, Aaron Taggart said: 'We've been keen to expand to the north coast for some time but were waiting for the right location.
'Now the timing feels right and the premises are ideal, it's been a stroke of luck that we are coinciding with such a busy summer season and we're looking forward to welcoming so many visitors to this wonderful part of the world.
'This site gives us the opportunity to create something really special, not just in terms of food, but also in setting.
'A seafront restaurant with uninterrupted views of the Atlantic isn't something you come by often! We'll be retaining Koko's existing staff where possible and building a strong new team to deliver the Top Blade experience.'
The new venue will be located in the prominent seafront premises currently home to Koko's, which is set to undergo a full transformation to become Top Blade's third restaurant.
Backed by a £350,000 investment, the project will create 20 new jobs in the local hospitality sector.
Top Blade, already a firm favourite in Belfast and Portadown, is known for its vibrant atmosphere, locally sourced steaks, and no-fuss food done well, (but not well done!).
Currently the chain serves up the widest variety of steaks with a staggering 15 options on the extensive menu, the new Portrush site will offer seating for 70 diners to enjoy the unrivalled ocean view, delivering a standout new dining destination right in the heart of the town.
Fellow Director John Crawford added: 'This is a big move for us, and we're ambitious about it. With this new opening, we're aiming to serve up to 100,000 steaks a year across our three locations.
'We're proud of our ethos, great steaks, sides and sauces, served with simplicity and flair, and we're confident it'll be a welcome addition to the Portrush dining scene.

"The timing couldn't be better. With thousands set to descend on the town for The Open and a number of new hospitality businesses already open or opening, it feels like the area is really coming into its own. Top Blade will certainly be a major player on the North Coast food scene.
'Bookings have not yet been released, but tables are set to fill up fast as soon as they do.'

Donald Trump to make Open return case for Turnberry as US President flies into Scotland
The Donald wants his Ayrshire course back on the Open rotation after controversy and poor infrastructure affected attendance Air Force One is expected to touch down in Aberdeen this summer ahead of Donald Trump paying flying visits to the Scottish jewels in his golfing crown. It has emerged that the US President is almost certain to attend the official opening of his new 18 hole course at Trump International at Balmedie on the outskirts of the city ahead of his proposed royal visit later in the year. Trump is also understood to be planning to combine his visit to the north-east with a trip to Ayrshire to trumpet his case for Turnberry to be reinstated to The Open schedule. No date has been announced for the official unveiling of the multi-million pound second links course on the Menie Estate, but it is likely to be within the next couple of months. Work on the spectacular New Course is close to completion and will create 'The Greatest 36 holes of Golf' alongside the Old Course opened in 2012, according to Trump's executive vice-president at the International Golf Links, Sarah Malone. Trump's most recent visit to the highly acclaimed resort was in 2023 to coincide with work commencing on the second course. It had initially been planned to name the new 18 holes MacLeod after Trump's Lewis-born mother, Mary, but Malone explained that the decision to refer to the two courses as the Old and New is a nod to tradition. Malone also highlighted the practicalities of doing so from a business perspective, adding: 'Having 36 holes is a big thing. It gives us limitless options and possibilities for tournament and professional play.' Trump International has already secured two top tournaments this summer in the shape of the €1 million Staysure PGA Seniors Championship from July-31 to August 3, and the Scottish Championship the following week. Eight-time European No 1 and Ryder Cup legend Colin Montgomerie will again host the seniors tournament prior to the groundbreaking DP World Tour event worth $2.75 million in prize money. Trump has owned the world-renowned Turnberry Links since 2014 - five years after the Ailsa course hosted the most recent of its four Open Championships. A combination of the controversy surrounding Trump's ownership and the infrastructure, which makes it the least well attended of the Open venues, has resulted in Turnberry disappearing from the championship schedule. But new R&A chief executive, Mark Darbon hinted recently about the possibility of Turnberry being reinstated to the rota following further improvements to the venue. Meanwhile, Monty has called on Open chiefs to bury the hatchet with Trump and accept a financial hit if necessary, due to Turnberry's status as a world class venue. He insisted: 'Turnberry needs to happen. It's ranked No 1 and rightly so. It's the best course we have - not in Scotland but in Britain. I don't think I'm being biased saying that. I think that's what we all feel. 'So to host the greatest championship in golf is a must somewhere down the line and let's hope it happens sooner rather than later. Yes, very much so.'

St Andrews golf worth £317m annually to the Scottish economy
Researchers calculated the amount visitors spent directly on golf in St Andrews as well as on hotels, restaurants, bars, shops and local travel providers. Around 72% of those visitors come from overseas, with the USA (40%) and Canada (6%) being the key markets. A further 28% of visits were from the UK, with the remaining 26% coming from elsewhere. Across visitors from all locations, 84% said they were 'likely or very likely' to return in the future. 'This is the first such study looking solely at the impact of golf in St Andrews on the town and the wider Scottish economy," said Neil Coulson, chief executive of St Andrews Links Trust. 'It clearly shows the massive impact on the town and that our visitors are delivering a boost to communities across Scotland each and every year. This impact has probably been undervalued in the past. "Scotland has a proud reputation as the birthplace of the game and St Andrews is home to many links courses, not least the Old Course, which are the envy of the world," Scottish Business Minister Richard Lochhead said. "This report hits home the scale of the benefits we all reap from the trust's courses, alongside the broader impact of golf tourism, which boosts the economy by £300 million every year and supports around 5,000 jobs. Vicki Miller, chief executive of VisitScotland, added: 'This comprehensive study showcases the important role golf plays in Scotland's visitor economy, with St Andrews standing at the heart of this as a globally recognised asset. For St Andrews Links Trust we have had the opportunity to investigate the economic impact of a permanent year-round golf business. "Using gold standard methods to interview over 2,400 golfers, our research reveals a significant asset to the Scottish economy, which has arguably not been fully appreciated. St Andrews Links Trust is not only a thriving business in its own right, it is also a catalyst for considerable tourism and employment benefits.'

Carnoustie Golf Links snaps up popular town centre restaurant
Carnoustie Golf Links has bought a popular town centre restaurant in a move it hopes will restore the venue as a favourite with locals and visitors. Links bosses have confirmed the purchase of the former Maxibell tapas bar at 5 Park Avenue. It sits just off the High Street and close to the legendary Championship Course. The premises have been a busy spot since its original days as the Golf Inn. But the restaurant closed last year and was later offered at auction with a £150,000 starting price. Links management are now developing new plans for the restaurant. The move comes after major changes to the running of the Open Championship venue. A new company has been formed to run the courses and resort hotel. Carnoustie Golf Heritage and Hospitality Group Limited has promised huge investment to secure the return of the event to Angus. And the Links said it is 'excited' about a comeback for Maxibell's. A spokesperson said: 'This decision reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting the community and preserving valued local institutions. 'Maxibell's has long been a place of connection and joy for many. 'We felt it was important to safeguard its legacy, ensure its continued success and to contribute positively to the community. 'We believe that this is a special opportunity for us to support something that means a lot to people. 'We're excited about the positive impact this will have both now and into the future.' 'We are currently in the process of exploring renovation works, including carrying out necessary surveys to assess the building and its facilities. 'We are working through this as quickly as we can and our aim is to re-open and welcome guests as soon as possible.' CGHHG now operate the golf assets and Carnoustie Golf Hotel as a single entity. In January, Angus Council agreed the biggest ever change to the way the council-owned courses are run. The Links said a new deal was essential to secure the external investment needed for Carnoustie to retain its place on The Open rota. A £3 million spa upgrade at Carnoustie Golf Hotel was completed earlier this year. Links chief executive Michael Wells said the investment was a 'sign of things to come' from its new owners.
