Russia lambasts US attacks as Iran looks to Moscow

Saudi Gazette14 hours ago

MOSCOW — Russian officials on Sunday castigated the US for its missile strike against Iran's nuclear plants, issuing veiled threats that Iran's nuclear ambitions would not be thwarted and welcoming Tehran's foreign minister for talks in Moscow.
A statement from Russia's Foreign Ministry 'strongly condemned' the airstrikes and called them a 'a gross violation of international law, the UN Charter, and UN Security Council resolutions.'
Dmitry Medvedev, who serves as deputy head of President Vladimir Putin's Security Council, said several countries were prepared to supply Tehran with nuclear weapons. He didn't specify which, but said the US attack caused minimal damage and would not stop Tehran from pursuing nuclear weapons.
The Iranian foreign minister told a press conference earlier that he would fly to Moscow on Sunday and have a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday.
'Russia is a friend of Iran and we enjoy a strategic partnership,' he told a news conference in Istanbul.
'We always consult with each other and coordinate our positions,' Araghchi said, noting that Russia was one of the signatories of the UN agreement on nuclear proliferation in Iran.
'I will have serious consultations with the Russian president tomorrow and we continue to work with each other,' he said.
But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky underlined the irony of Russia pointing the finger at the US for alleged breaches of the global rulebook, in a post on X in which he stated that the country had once again signalled it wanted no ceasefire in Ukraine.
"Putin can look at his friends in Iran to see where such regimes end up, and how far into decay they drive their countries," Zelensky warned the Russian President in a post on X.
Zelensky said, "Russia wants to wage war. Even brandishing some threats. This means the pressure the world is applying isn't hurting them enough yet, or they are trying very hard to keep up appearances. Well, the Russian economy is already crumbling. We will support this process even more." — Euronews

Iran strikes U.S. air bases in Qatar and Iraq in retaliation

DOHA— Iran announced on Monday night that it launched missile strikes targeting American forces stationed at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar and a US base in Iraq, marking a significant escalation in its confrontation with the United States. The announcement aired on Iranian state television alongside martial music, with a caption hailing the attack as 'a mighty and successful response by the armed forces of Iran to America's aggression.' Iran said it had fired missiles toward a US military base in Iraq, Iranian state media Tasnim reported. Iran's missile operation against American bases in Qatar and Iraq is code-named 'O Abu Abdullah,' meaning 'Blessings of victory.' The strike on Al Udeid Air Base came just hours after Qatar temporarily closed its airspace as a precautionary measure amid Tehran's threats to retaliate for U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar was attacked 'by short-range and medium-range ballistic missiles originating from Iran,' a US defense official said Monday. 'At this time, there are no reports of US casualties,' the official said. 'We are monitoring this situation closely and will provide more information as it becomes available,' the official added. Non-sheltered American planes were moved out of Al Udeid Air Base last week, according to a satellite image that was taken on June 19 that shows nearly empty tarmacs. This means the planes were moved before Iran launched a missile attack on Al Udeid Monday in response to the US striking its nuclear facilities over the weekend, according to media reports. Qatari officials have not yet confirmed the extent of the damage or casualties from the reported attack. Earlier, Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned an attempted missile strike on Al Udeid, calling it a violation of the country's sovereignty and warning that Qatar reserves the right to respond. The development further heightens fears of a broader regional war, as Iran continues to respond to the U.S. and Israeli military actions with direct attacks in the Gulf.

Qatar condemns Iranian missile attack on Al-Udeid Air Base; vows right to respond

DOHA — The State of Qatar has strongly condemned a missile attack launched by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targeting Al-Udeid Air Base, describing it as a flagrant violation of Qatari sovereignty, airspace, international law, and the UN Charter. In a statement released on Monday evening, the Qatari government confirmed that its air defenses successfully intercepted the incoming Iranian missiles, and that no injuries or casualties were reported. The base had been preemptively evacuated as part of heightened security procedures amid rising regional tensions. 'Qatar reserves the right to respond directly in a manner equivalent with the nature and scale of this brazen aggression,' the statement said, emphasizing that any response would remain in line with international law. The Qatari Ministry of Defense is expected to release a detailed report on the circumstances surrounding the attack. The government stressed that continued military escalation threatens to destabilize the region and could lead to catastrophic consequences for global peace and security. Doha reiterated its longstanding call for restraint and dialogue, stating: 'We reaffirm that dialogue is the only way to overcome the current crises and ensure the security of the region and the peace of its people.' Qatar also noted that it was among the first nations to warn against the risks of escalating Israeli military actions in the region and has consistently advocated for diplomatic solutions and the principles of good-neighborliness.
