
Nepal's royalists demand restoration of monarchy dumped 17 years ago, Asia News
KATHMANDU — Thousands of supporters of Nepal's former king rallied in the capital Kathmandu on Thursday (May 29), calling for the restoration of the constitutional monarchy that was abolished 17 years ago, amid rising unhappiness with successive elected governments.
Flag-waving protesters marched into the city centre from different directions shouting: "Our king is dearer than lives ... king come back and save the country," as riot police stood guard but did not intervene.
At a similar rally in March, two people were killed and several injured.
The 239-year-old monarchy was voted out in 2008 following weeks of bloody street protests. The last king of the Himalayan nation, 77-year-old Gyanendra, has lived with his family in a private house in Kathmandu as a commoner since being toppled.
He has not commented on Thursday's demonstration but expressed sorrow at the violence that killed two people in March.
Demonstrators are also calling for the country of 30 million people, wedged between China and India, to become a Hindu state again, a status it lost with the monarchy.
"Governments formed in the last 17 years have failed to deliver on their promises of development, creation of jobs and improvement of the living conditions of people," said 35-year-old street vendor Rajendra Tamang.
"Thousands of young people are forced to leave the country in search of work as they see no hope here," he said.
Millions of young Nepalis are working in the Middle East, South Korea and Malaysia, mainly at construction sites, and the money they send home is a key source of income for Nepal.
Supporters of the government staged a separate but smaller rally nearby in support of the republican system that replaced the monarchy.
The three major political parties that jointly control nearly 200 of the 275 seats in parliament say the monarchy was consigned to history and cannot be restored.
All three jointly campaigned against the monarchy and voted it out in 2008 and say their faith in the republican system was unshakeable.
The Rastriya Prajatantra Party, which is campaigning for the monarchy, holds only 13 seats in parliament.
A two-thirds majority or 184 lawmakers is needed to change the constitution, which was adopted in 2015, turning Nepal into a federal democratic republic.
The royalists say their protests will continue until the monarchy is restored.

BANGKOK/PHNOM PENH — Thousands of Cambodians joined a state-organised march in its capital on Wednesday (June 18) to support the government in an ongoing border dispute with Thailand triggered by the death of a Cambodian soldier last month. The two neighbours share an 820-km land border, parts of which are undemarcated and include ancient temples that both sides have contested for decades. The rally comes days after officials held talks in Phnom Penh in a bid to ease tensions. Though talks were inconclusive, both sides pledge to continue dialogue. Marchers shouted slogans, waved the Cambodian flag and held portraits of the Prime Minister Hun Manet and his father, the influential former Prime Minister Hun Sen. Monks and students were seen at the rally, led by deputy premier Hun Many, the prime minister's brother. "Cambodia's land! We won't take others' land, we keep our land!" some chanted. On Wednesday, Cambodia's defence ministry said that Thailand had again violated its sovereignty. "Thailand has increased activities in the area, including drone flights, trench digging, and troop deployments along the border," the statement said. Thailand rejected the accusation. "These trenches are located well within Thai sovereign territory, and therefore, we refute any allegation that we violated the MOU 2000," foreign ministry spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura said, referring to a memorandum of understanding signed in 2000 aimed at resolving border disputes. "Thailand has not increased activities in the area along the border," he added. Although both governments have pledged to calm nationalist fervour and handle the issue through dialogue, Bangkok has tightened its borders and threatened to cut off electricity supplies to its neighbour. Phnom Penh announced it would cease buying Thai electric power, internet bandwidth and produce. It has also ordered local television stations not to screen Thai films. On the weekend, Cambodia said it had brought the four disputed areas to the International Court of Justice. Thailand has repeatedly said it does not recognise the court's jurisdiction and would only use bilateral mechanisms, with the next meeting slated for September. Cambodia has twice successfully sought ICJ resolutions, in 1962 on the ownership of the disputed 11th-century Hindu Preah Vihear temple and in 2013, after it sought clarification of jurisdiction of the land around the temple. Tensions escalated in 2008 over Preah Vihear, leading to skirmishes over several years and at least a dozen deaths, some during a week-long exchange of artillery in 2011. Both countries have for more than a century contested sovereignty at undemarcated points along their shared border, which was mapped by France in 1907 when Cambodia was its colony. [[nid:718862]]

Indonesia will ‘copy' Singapore's successful policies with pride, says President Prabowo

ST PHOTO: JASON QUAH SINGAPORE - Singapore has done well in providing housing for its people and in managing its reserves for future generations, and Indonesia has copied these policies with pride, said Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto during a state visit on June 16. To this end, Indonesia is pushing ahead with its initiative to build one million apartments to house lower-income citizens, modelled after Singapore's HDB programme, and has also set up sovereign wealth fund Daya Anagata Nusantara, or Dhanantara, earlier this year, its version of Singapore's Temasek. Speaking during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong at Parliament House, Mr Prabowo said he had spent some time in Singapore as a boy and witnessed the early days of Singapore's development. 'To be very frank, I've always admired the success of Singapore, and especially the success of the early leaders of Singapore, the leadership, statesmanship,' said the Indonesian President. 'In real life, we are not allowed to copy our friends homework or our friends. But in real life, why not copy best practice, right? It's called copy with pride.' He added that imitation was the highest form of respect, and cited Singapore's orchid diplomacy as another area that Indonesia might want to 'copy'. 'If you are imitated, that means you must be doing something good,' said Mr Prabowo who was presented with an orchid named after his mother, the late Mrs Dora Sigar Soemitro, at a ceremony officiated by President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. The Paraphalanthe Dora Sigar Soemitro has long pencil-shaped leaves and blush pink flowers with a golden forked lip marked with crimson spots. It can grow to some 40cm in length with eight to 12 flowers on each stem, with each flower measuring about 7cm wide. President Tharman said the orchid, a beautiful hybrid with a lineage that includes Singapore's Vanda Miss Joaquim and a rare Indonesian species from Kalimantan, expresses the ties between both countries, which go far back into history. Both Singapore and Indonesia were part of a 'dance of civilisations' - initially Hindu and Buddhist, then Muslims, Christian and Taoist - that shaped Southeast Asia over the centuries, he added. 'That blend of cultures remains alive in our common heritage to this day,' said President Tharman in a Facebook post on June 16, after he hosted a state banquet for Mr Prabowo. He noted that the late Zubir Said, composer of Singapore's national anthem, had also come to Singapore from Sumatra in 1928. Mr Prabowo said he was touched that the unique orchid was named after his late mother. His mother, who died in 2008, was from a prominent Minahasa family with both Minahasan and German ancestry. She met Mr Prabowo's father, Mr Soemitro Djojohadikusumo, when they were studying in the Netherlands. 'I was given the honor of nominating a name, and I nominated the name of my mother to give respect to her for having raised me. For having raised maybe a difficult boy in his younger days, but finally, he became president of Indonesia,' Mr Prabowo said. 'I'm very proud that my mother is honored in this way.' Sikkim locals fume as India-Nepal climbers ‘defile' sacred Kangchenjunga, world's third-highest peak

PHOTO: ADGPI/X - It was in May 1955 that a British mountaineering team successfully climbed Kangchenjunga, the world's third-highest mountain at 8,586m, for the first time. But members of this expedition did not step onto the peak of the mountain on the border of Nepal and India. They instead stopped about 1.5m short of the summit, in deference to the wishes of locals in the region, who venerate this Himalayan mountain and did not want the climbers to sully its sacred peak by stepping onto it. More than 70 years later, locals in the small Indian state of Sikkim, which lies in the heart of the Himalayas between Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet, are fuming over a mountaineering team having done just that. A team comprising representatives from the Indian and Nepalese armies scaled Kangchenjunga's peak in two waves on May 19 and 20, as part of the Indian government's Har Shikhar Tiranga (Hindi for 'A Tricolour Atop Every Peak') initiative aimed at hoisting the Indian national flag on the highest point in all 28 Indian states. The expedition, which flagged off on March 26, was organised by the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (Nimas), which functions under India's Ministry of Defence and is based in the north-eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh. As the Indian side of the mountain remains closed to climbers, the team approached it from Nepal. Nevertheless, the ascent to the top of Kangchenjunga has angered locals in Sikkim, particularly members of the Bhutia and Lepcha communities, most of whom are Buddhists and consider the mountain as a guardian deity who has watched over them and their land for generations. 'They have defiled the sanctity of our Kangchenjunga,' said Mr Tseten Tashi Bhutia, the convenor of Sikkim Bhutia Lepcha Apex Committee (Siblac) – an organisation that represents the rights and interests of these two communities – and a former minister with a previous state government in Sikkim. The controversy has ignited concerns that the centuries-old religious and cultural traditions of indigenous Buddhist communities in Sikkim, India's second-smallest state with a population of around 632,000, were disregarded to generate patriotic fervour. It also highlighted the power dynamics between the central government, which organised the climb, and the state government, which expressly prohibits any climb atop Kangchenjunga . PHOTO: ST FILE Sikkim has maintained a formal climbing ban atop Kangchenjunga since 2001, one that followed another controversy in 2000 when the state government allowed an Austrian team to attempt the near-vertical trek up the peak in exchange for US$20,000. The team failed to make it to the summit. 'Whatever has happened, has happened. Now damage control has to be done,' Mr Bhutia told The Straits Times, stressing the need for a 'purification ritual' to placate their guardian deity. He also called for an apology from the climbers as well as the central government that organised the climb and the state government that failed to stop it. 'This type of blunder should also not be repeated in the future,' he added. Neither the climbers nor the Indian government has issued any statement following the controversy. ST approached Nimas for a comment but did not receive a response. On June 12, Siblac issued a statement saying that the recent climb had 'deeply hurt the religious and cultural sentiments' of the Bhutias and Lepchas, and formally called for an apology. The Lepchas believe they are descendants of ancestors who were created out of the snow of the holy Kangchenjunga. Locals in the state also celebrate their unique relationship with the mountain during Pang Lhabsol, an annual festival that commemorates the consecration of Kangchenjunga as the guardian deity of Sikkim. Siblac will organise a Buddhist purification ritual on June 15 at the Kabi Lungchok sacred grove in North Sikkim to seek the deity's forgiveness and 'restore the spiritual harmony and sanctity of our land'. It was at this historic forest site that the Blood Brotherhood Treaty was signed between the Lepchas and Bhutias in the 13th century, marking the beginning of Sikkim's unified rule. Kangchenjunga was invoked as a witness to the signing of this key treaty. Locals fear angering their guardian deity could cause natural disasters, something the state has often been afflicted with. On June 1, a landslide hit the site of an army camp in Sikkim following days of heavy rains, killing at least six individuals. Anger following the ascent has been widespread in Sikkim. A video of Sikkimese children pleading with everyone not to climb their revered mountain has been circulating online and even Sikkim's Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, who heads the state government, expressed his concern. He wrote to India's Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah on May 24 describing the recent ascent as 'a violation of both the prevailing legal provisions and the deeply held religious beliefs of the people of Sikkim'. Sikkim has maintained a formal climbing ban atop not just Kangchenjunga but also eight other sacred peaks since 2001. However, ascents are made from time to time from the Nepalese side of Kangchenjunga. But Mr Bhutia said the expedition team, irrespective of their approach path, had violated the sacred peak. 'They have blown the law (preventing any ascent on Kangchenjunga) to smithereens,' he said. Anger following the ascent has been widespread in Sikkim. PHOTO: ADGPI/X In his letter, Mr Tamang also urged the Indian government to convince Nepal to ensure that no further expeditions are permitted on Kangchenjunga. The demand for such a climbing restriction is not unique. China, for instance, prevents any climbing activity on Mount Kailash in Tibet, given its deep religious significance for followers of not just Buddhism, but also Hinduism, Jainism and Bon, an indigenous religion practised in Tibet. Even Nepal, which has otherwise embraced mountain tourism enthusiastically, bans climbing on Machhapuchhare, an iconic 6,993m mountain whose name translates to 'fishtail' and which is revered by local Gurung people. Mr Jiwan Rai, a political commentator based in Sikkim's capital Gangtok, said it is important to view Kangchenjunga similarly through a 'time-honoured Sikkimese lens', one that does not consider the mountain as a 'trophy for adventurers' but a symbol of cultural heritage and 'the pinnacle of religious identity' for a significant section of the state's people. 'This centuries-old indigenous world view now stands desecrated for the sake of some thrill to be felt by army personnel. Isn't that a massive cultural cost?' Mr Rai told ST. Furthermore, the recent ascent of Kangchenjunga is being seen as an affront to not just Sikkimese cultural and religious values, but also their political rights. Mr Rai added that the Sikkim state government had failed to uphold its rights by not preventing the Indian government-led climb despite its official ban on any ascent atop Kangchenjunga. 'This lapse reveals the current government's inability to withstand pressure from the centre. The only way to disprove this perception is by firmly demanding recompense for the violation of law and redress for the cultural sacrilege,' he said. The state is currently governed by the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), a regional party that Chief Minister Tamang leads as its president. The SKM is part of the National Democratic Alliance government at the centre, led by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. Siblac had opposed the ascent publicly as early as April, with a letter sent to the state's Governor O.P. Mathur, requesting him to call off the expedition. The governor of an Indian state is appointed by the Indian president on the advice of the prime minister and serves as its constitutional head, taking decisions based on the advice of the chief minister and council of ministers. Said Mr Rai: 'A widespread perception is emerging that India is steering towards a uniform national identity, and a state with its distinct personality like Sikkim comes in the way. If Sikkim does not make its voice heard now, it risks losing its unique identity to India's broader and increasingly homogenised national narrative.'
