Inabel weavers exhibit ‘Ilocano Shark'-inspired logo ahead of Palaro 2025
The 65th Palarong Pambansa unveiled some handwoven creations depicting the official icon for the upcoming 65th Palarong Pambansa made by traditional Inabel weavers from Ilocos Norte, where this year's national games for student-athletes will be held.
Woven by Jeanette Rico and Mary Anne Caoagas, Inabel weavers from Barangay Nalasin in Paoay, the fabric showcases the official icon of the Palarong Pambansa 2025 crafted on traditional wooden loom machines.
Small iterations of the tournament logo–a pixelated figure that takes after the silhouette of Ilocano swimming legend Teofilo Yldefonso in his iconic hands-on-the-waist pose during the 1928 Olympics– were delicately handwoven on the white Abel cloth in red and blue threads.
According to a shared Facebook post by Ilocos Norte Tourism and Ilocos Norte-Palarong Pambansa, the symbol is an homage to the Ilocano breaststroke swimmer– himself a two-time Olympic bronze getter– which 'embodies the triumphs born of perseverance, and the heritage that threads every Ilocano victory.'
Yldefonso was a highly decorated swimmer from Piddig, Ilocos Norte, and the first Filipino to have won an Olympic medal when he bagged bronze during the 1928 Summer Games in Amsterdam.
The 65th Palarong Pambansa, the country's largest sports event for student-athletes in elementary and high school, will be held in Laoag, Ilocos Norte from May 24 to May 31, 2025.

(Photo: FIBA) NBA star Kevin Durant has purchased a minority stake in French soccer club Paris St Germain, the Champions League winners said on Friday, and the Phoenix Suns forward will provide expertise on their planned expansion into basketball. Durant, two-time NBA champion and four-time Olympic gold medallist, has signed a share purchase and strategic partnership agreement with PSG's majority shareholder Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), through his company Boardroom. "It is an honor to partner with QSI and to be a shareholder of Paris St Germain, a club and a city that is deeply close to my heart," Durant, who won gold at the Paris Olympics last year, said. "This club has big plans and I look forward to being part of the next phase of growth and exploring new investment opportunities with QSI." One of those opportunities is likely to come in the world of basketball, with PSG already involved in early-stage talks with the NBA regarding potential investment and venues for a new basketball league in Europe. Durant, who had already forged a link with PSG through the club's minority shareholder Arctos Partners, will partner on a wide range of commercial, investment and content production initiatives. The 36-year-old will also support the club in its strategy of diversification and growth on sporting and commercial fronts, including developing the club's strategy in the United States and other international markets. PSG said in their release that Durant would provide "expertise on PSG's multi-sport strategy, particularly regarding future projects in the field of basketball". Durant was recently included in Forbes' 2025 list of the world's highest-paid athletes, coming in at number 10 with earnings of $101.4 million. —Reuters

Young Negrense cager selected for NBA, FIBA's BWB Camp
Talisay City born Paul Barcelona is among the 60 elite boys and girls below 17 years old from the Asia Pacific Region selected to take part in the 15th Basketball Without Borders Asia Camp slated from June 19 to 22 in Singapore. Fresh off a silver medal finish in secondary basketball in the 2025, Barcelona will step into another momentous milestone in his young career. 'Playing for Palarong Pambansa 2025 representing Region 6 was a very significant experience for me. And now, to be able to be chosen to represent once more in a very prestigious sporting event is another significant milestone and I'm truly honored and grateful for this big opportunity,' Barcelona told GMA Regional TV News. 'This will surely enhance and develop my skills in the game and will create a wider chance for me to grow my love for basketball,' he added. The BWB camp is an NBA and FIBA's global basketball development and community outreach program where campers will take part in life-skills, leadership development and social responsibility programming. Campers will have an opportunity to learn directly from current and former FIBA, NBA, and WNBA players and coaches. Among them are 2024 NBA champion Derrick White of the Boston Celtics and 2024 NBA All-Star Tyrese Maxey of the Philadelphia 76ers. 'I hope that I can make my school Bacolod Taytung High School, my hometown Negros Occidental, and my country Philippines proud,' he remarked. In 2018, Zamboangueño Forthsky Padrigao won the MVP honors during the 10th edition of the camp. Barcelona is no stranger to international camps. Back in 2022, he alongside three other Filipinos, were selected to take part in the Jr. NBA Asia in Tokyo, Japan. The 6-foot-1 athlete was exposed to basketball at a young age through the influence of his father, Pete. 'It has been my first toy as a baby and a toddler, and growing up I saw my father enjoying watching basketball on television and eventually, he started to bring me to basketball courts for training with him and then it continued as I started with kinder school where I began basketball clinics at age 5,' Barcelona said. Barcelona shared that he patterned his game after that of his idol, Escalante native and basketball star James Yap. 'I really like the way he moves on the court. He makes the games look easier because his moves are simple yet effective,' he noted about the former national team player. On the other hand, being surrounded by household name coaches in Bacolod City in Ryan Hugnatan, Nico Lopingco, and Atoy Callora kept him grounded and helped him grow as a player on and off the court. 'My biggest dream in life is to achieve a combination of being a successful basketball player and at the same time achieve academic success,' Barcelona said. 'My love and passion for basketball has provided a huge positive impact on my personal development, and hopefully with God's help, I will be able to balance both of my dreams to make it a reality,' he added.

USA Volleyball's Erik Shoji comes out as queer
USA Volleyball team captain and two-time Olympic bronze medalist Erik Shoji last Saturday came out as queer. According to the UN Girls' Education Initiative website, ''queer' is an umbrella term that is commonly used to refer to or describe people who are not heterosexual or are not cisgender. Further, 'queer' is also used to refer to approaches that oppose heteronormative ways of thinking and being.' In a video on Shoji's social media account, the libero said it took a long time before the Hawaii native accepted it. 'I am here to tell the world today that I am queer. It feels scary but freeing at the same time,' Shoji said. 'I think personal acceptance takes a while. For me, it took a long time and I'm working through that still every day, but I think I'm stronger, more confident, and more sure of myself than I've ever been, and I feel that given who I am and the platform that I have that this is my moment and I'm so excited to move forward after this.' Shoji said that by coming out, the three-time Olympian hopes to be a role model and is now more excited to know 'where life is going to take me and who I am and what I can bring to my family, my team, my friends, and those around me.' The libero also hopes to 'inspire people to be themselves and to be personable, be kind, be nice, and to love life.' 'Part of me hopes that the world keeps spinning, the volleyball community stays amazing and accepting and growing. I feel so good saying what I'm saying and I know that I'm genuine in what I'm saying and I believe in myself and I believe in others and I believe that life will keep going and it'll be great and my friends will be there, my family will be there, my team will be there, and I'm gonna continue to be myself and I'm so excited for that.' USA Volleyball's social media account, meanwhile, said it is proud of Shoji. "Proud of you, Erik. Your courage, authenticity, and leadership on and off the court continues to inspire us all! Thank you for being you. We're honored to stand with you, always." —JKC, GMA Integrated News
