UK court orders singer Chris Brown held in custody over 2023 London nightclub fight charge
Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown's upcoming tour was thrown into question Friday as a British judge ordered him held in custody while facing allegations that he beat a music producer with a bottle in a London nightclub in 2023.
Brown, 36, appeared in Manchester Magistrates' Court to face one count of causing grievous bodily harm and was ordered held until his next hearing June 13 in London – the same day he's due to take the stage in Frankfurt, Germany, on the third date of his world tour.
Judge Joanne Hirst rejected Brown's bail request after prosecutor Hannah Nicholls said that the crime was 'extremely serious.'
Brown was on tour in the UK in February 2023 when he is alleged to have attacked producer Abe Diaw with a bottle at the Tape nightclub, in London's Mayfair neighborhood.
Defense attorney Grace Forbes argued that the American performer wasn't a flight risk and should be released.
Brown was flanked by court officers in the dock. His hair was bleached blonde and he wore sweatpants and a black T-shirt. He confirmed his name and birth date, and said that his address was the local Lowry Hotel, where he was arrested early Thursday and taken into custody.
His case was transferred to Southwark Crown Court in London, where he is expected to enter a plea to the charge.
Brown's representative didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press.
Brown, often called by his nickname Breezy, burst onto the music scene as a teen in 2005 and has become a major hitmaker over the years with notable songs such as 'Run It,' 'Kiss Kiss' and 'Without You.'
He won his first Grammy for best R&B album in 2011 for 'F.A.M.E.' and then earned his second gold trophy in the same category for '11:11 (Deluxe)' earlier this year.
The singer is due to launch an international tour next month with artists Jhene Aiko, Summer Walker and Bryson Tiller, opening with a European leg on June 8 in Amsterdam before starting North America shows in July.

Man in his 20s dies after two-vehicle collision
A man in his 20s has died following a two-vehicle collision. Avon and Somerset Police said the crash happened at about 23:35 BST on 20 June in Uphill Road North in Weston-super-Mare. The force said a red Audi A3 was heading towards Uphill when it collided with a purple Mercedes C240 travelling in the opposite direction, near the junction for Moorland Road. The Audi driver sustained serious injuries and died in hospital on Saturday. Police said the Mercedes driver, aged in his 50s, was taken to hospital but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing. Uphill Road North was closed to allow for an investigation and recovery work but reopened on Saturday morning. Anybody who witnessed the collision is asked to contact the force. Iran accused of abducting journalist's family in retaliation for war coverage
DUBAI — Iran detained the family members of an Iran International journalist Saturday in retaliation for the channel's coverage of the country's war with Israel, threatening to hold them until the journalist resigned from her position. The London-based Persian-language news channel said in a statement that it strongly condemns the abduction of its journalist's family, calling it 'an appalling act of hostage-taking aimed at coercing our colleague into resigning from their post.' 'This deeply reprehensible tactic marks a dangerous escalation in the regime's ruthless campaign to silence dissent and suppress independent journalism,' the news channel said. The detainment marks the latest example of Iran's long-standing effort to crack down not only on Iranian journalists inside the country but also those abroad who still have family and friends living in Iran. The Islamic Republic is one of the world's top jailers of journalists, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists, and in the best of times, reporters face strict restrictions. The broadcaster said that Iran's paramilitary Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps took the presenter's mother, father and younger brother to an unidentified location. The journalist, whose name the outlet did not disclose, then received a phone call from her father early Saturday, urging her to resign from her role, according to Iran International. The voices of security agents could be heard in the background telling her father what to say. 'I've told you a thousand times to resign. What other consequences do you expect?' Iran International said her father told her. 'You have to resign.' Persian-language broadcasters such as Iran International and BBC Persia have long been targets for the Islamic Republic, given that they broadcast in the native language and many Iranians, both domestically and abroad, rely on them for news, especially of the most recent Iran-Israel war amid an official internet blackout. Iran International in particular has become a target of Tehran in recent years over its programming that is critical of the theocratic government in Tehran. The Iranian government has called the news outlet a terrorist organization. One of its journalists was stabbed in 2024 in an attack suspected to have been carried out by Iran, while men were arrested in a suspected plot to target others at the channel.
